Running out of petrol

jmh740 · 07/03/2025 15:51

So after a discussion with Oh yesterday can I ask how many times you have ever run out of petrol and how many years you have been driving.

Person A run out once in 25 years of driving.

Person B run out 4 times in 30 years of driving.

Person A thinks B is irresponsible and most people have never run out. Person B thinks 4 times in 30 years is not much.

Never.

Came very close to it whilst driving along a remote part of NZ years ago. We made it to the petrol station, but that was a faff to work out how to actually operate this one bloody pump 😆

Fond memories.

Funnywonder · 07/03/2025 19:27

Driving 35 years and have never run out of petrol.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 07/03/2025 19:30

Never, & I started driving long before all the lights & signals on the dashboard warned the driver.

cheezncrackers · 07/03/2025 19:30

34 years and never.

4 times is a lot!

Psychoticbreak · 07/03/2025 19:30

Twice ran out and had to be rescued in 25 years driving.

melsid · 07/03/2025 19:30

I have been driving 31 plus years and never run out, neither has my husband. Find it weird if you have tbh. Surely it’s basic to ensure you don’t?

Nope never - even when I had an old morris traveller that the petrol guage didn't work on, I carried an emergency supply in the boot!

I did the same when I had an old Mini with a fucked fuel gauge.

Never needed it though, I used to reset the trip counter when I filled up and I knew roughly how many miles I could do on a tankful.

I've been driving for 50 years without ever running out.

fartfacenotfatface · 07/03/2025 19:31

I've been driving 28 years and I've never run out of fuel.

CrystalSingerFan · 07/03/2025 19:31

Driving for 40 years. Never run out.

OTOH I was on holiday with a gang of friends once and someone asked to borrow my car for an outing I wasn't interested in. I handed over the keys and told her that it was low on petrol and needed filling up.

Eventually, the car reappeared at the gite and the driver started abusing me as my car had run out of petrol. I was mystified. She informed me that HER car had a lot more petrol left when the petrol gauge needle reached 'R' than mine did. My bad, apparently.

Gravytanned · 07/03/2025 19:32

Never. It was touch and go when I had a car where the petrol gauge was faulty but tbh that was the least shit thing about that car.

Zanatdy · 07/03/2025 19:32

I passed one month after I was 17, i’m 49 this year and have never ran out. When the petrol light comes on, I go that day.

Eight8eight · 07/03/2025 19:34

Once in 25 years. Only because three garages were out of petrol on my route and I had no idea! I could possibly have made it to a petrol station but stayed put whilst my DH brought me some just to be on the safe side! So I didn't conk out entitely!

ManchesterLu · 07/03/2025 19:41

Driving for 10 years and never run out. I'm the kind of person who fills up when it gets to a quarter of a tank. DP, however, lets it go ridiculously low, but has also never ran out!

He leaves the fuel light on for ages, and it gets so low the car stops even estimating how many miles are left! Stresses me out!

Imonlyhappywhenitrains · 07/03/2025 19:43

I came close, three weeks ago for the first time ever on the M40 heading South. The light came on and oh, no services for ages! (I'm not currently a member of a roadside assistance company either 😬)
In my defence, I have had a license for about 25 years, but had a big stretch of non driving from about 7-18 years ago and have done barely any motorway driving since about 2005 till the last few months 😆

ClearHoldBuild · 07/03/2025 19:44

36 years, never run out. I get a twitchy eye if it hits 1/4 tank.

NurtureGrow · 07/03/2025 19:44

17 years and never run out.

I almost used to sometimes, because I didn’t have enough money for petrol. I’d go and put £10 in sometimes 😬

I think if someone has run out 4 times in 30 years, I wouldn’t judge them. I guess there were reasons.. no one would want to!

FeeLipa · 07/03/2025 19:46

I've been driving for 20 years, I have never ran out. DH has been driving for the same and has also never ran out.

Although there was a time in the Yorkshire Dales when I was convinced we would be stranded in the middle of nowhere. We were on a single road, with nothing around for miles except for sheep and cows.

SIL regularly runs out, and DH has to rescue her. She will see her fuel light and just watch it for a few days. Last time she was at the traffic lights in a filter lane on an A road junction during rush hour. DH felt like a massive knob head having to stand there with a can while being honked at.

Epidote · 07/03/2025 19:46

24 years none.

Ophy83 · 07/03/2025 19:48

Never. If you run out in the wrong place that could mean points or a fine

amylou8 · 07/03/2025 19:48

Run out...I get anxiety below half a tank!

ThePoshUns · 07/03/2025 19:49

36 years driving and never.

Boredlass · 07/03/2025 19:50

I’m amazed that anyone can run out of petrol.

MammTorr · 07/03/2025 19:52

Never but I've been so so close on occasion

BIossomtoes · 07/03/2025 19:52

Boredlass · 07/03/2025 19:50

I’m amazed that anyone can run out of petrol.

It’ll blow your mind if I tell you I once absent mindedly filled up with diesel instead of petrol then.

RuthW · 07/03/2025 19:53

Never

40 years
