No, MN, I will not disable my ad block

The pop up is ridiculous and is making the site unusable. I've had to click to dismiss it several times just trying to post this.

Fix the ads so they're not massive and intrusive and maybe I'll consider turning it off.

I use an incognito tab instead

I've just tried this but the ads are still there.

Oh yes the ads are there but the tracking isn't. So there's no cookies etc enduring after your browser session

NoSoupForU · 03/03/2025 19:09

I wouldn't mind if there was some sort of action taken to improve the experience of users who have been reporting the issues with ads taking over the screen, making it impossible to scroll, causing lag, causing pages to not load, causing crashes etc. All that ever happens is someone from mumsnet will comment and ask for screenshots and then the issue gets ignored thereafter.

Coupled with the other recent issues I think its incredibly tone deaf to be pushing it now, if at all.

Mumsnet and reach media are the only sites I use an ad blocker for, because the ads experience makes it impossible to use either site.

IPM · 03/03/2025 19:11

Am I right in thinking Premium doesn't solve the problem and that you just get fewer ads instead of none?

WinterBones · 03/03/2025 19:15

Misaster · 03/03/2025 16:40

But let’s face it…. No one saying they will cease to ever use mumsnet again, will actually follow through

name changes galore on the horizon

Not many will leave, but we will spend less time here, because while i have whitelisted the site, if i come on and the ads are huge, or intrusive, or upset my visual/sensory balance (disability) i'll just go again.

There’s going to be SO many name changes in the coming weeks!

there are

Use DuckDuckGo for your browser - no ads!

AlexandrinaH · 03/03/2025 19:22

Lougle · 03/03/2025 17:13

I can't remember what I did....I have a page that just has the thread and then two empty spaces with the text 'ADVERTISEMENT' in them. No ads. No request to turn off ad blockers...

Same on mine - Safari. Can’t remember what changes I made but I made quite a lot when the announcement first came out about blocking ad blockers. As soon as I made the changes, the site no longer freezes or reloads. The ads cause a lot of issues. It wouldn’t be so bad if they were not such a pain to navigate the site with.

I would like the answer to this too, please.

BobbyBiscuits · 03/03/2025 19:34

You can get ad blockers that you can switch on and off for each site. I'm not happy at all but I can't afford to pay.

I've never complained about the ads because I assumed that I would just be told that I needed to pay for premium. But maybe that doesn't resolve it either.

I cannot bear anything that is distracting or jiggly, and in the past have actually used opaque paper to block the distractions. I have never bought anything from an advert either, I go by personal recommendation from people I know and trust.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 03/03/2025 23:34

You want us to post them @BeckyAMumsnet but nothing is ever done about them. Here are the ones that came up just scrolling since you posted, to the end of this thread. Ridiculous!

I have set my blocker to allow acceptable ads and to not allow third party tracking, and mumsnet is cutting me out.

justasking111 · 03/03/2025 23:45

I do get ads but they've never filled the screen. I don't really notice them.

Also, for me, when the ad is on the screen, I can't do anything until it goes away. So if I try to click on a thread topic, it won't do anything until the ad is finished.

IroningThrone · 04/03/2025 10:36

It's the principal too. MN are making over 2mil a year off the backs of us posters yet they want us to pay for the privilege of posting on the site which has had multiple data breaches, the CSA scandal and ads that are either broken or dodgy?

No.

If Justine commits to fixing the issues, stopped seeing us posters as cash cows to both generate content (and money) and pay her to do so then maybe I'll come back. But ATM I am deeply, deeply uncomfortable with handing over any sort of personal info because I can't trust it's going to be kept safe. I'm also deeply reluctant to use the site without an ad block because of the issues with ads.

There's also something deeply unpleasant in implying that users who are generating content for the site are freeloaders because they don't want to pay.

Probably the ones who cannot afford to subscribe are creating a lot of the content as well.
{Edit: So therefore aren't 'Freddie Freeloaders'}

Abitofalark · 04/03/2025 13:26

If I were to pay for mumsnet I would want it to be better organised, managed and monitored. In its present state it's a shambles and not something I would spend money on.

oakleaffy · 04/03/2025 13:29

This is how many trackers and threats have been stopped by using an ad blocker- A friend just sent a copy the data from her family laptop

The trackers and threats are alarming.

There's around half a dozen a page on my phone. But they never open up to fill the page. I can scroll past like most sites. Is it my settings? I confess my techy son sets up new phones for me and I pay for esed annually for peace of mind.

Conkerjar · 04/03/2025 14:06

No issues so far using a browser that blocks it all. Kind of reticent to say which in case they develop a work-around 😆 I'm not a big time user, I'm just ill today and dossing around/hugging the new foster dog. But I have a TV and a remote control and podcasts and crafts and oh yeah, other forums, and I won't even think about this place if I can never use it again.

wandawaves · 04/03/2025 15:11

I started getting that pop-up yesterday and it's driving me crazy. So far I'm just pressing 'continue' and using the back button, but I'm getting over it.

Most annoyingly, on the pop-up where it says 'contact support', I actually filled this out, saying that I do not wish to disable my ad-blocker nor do I wish to pay for a subscription, but I do want to continue using the site.
I got a reply via email... with instructions on how to disable my ad-blocker, and how to subscribe/pay for premium. 🙄
