No, MN, I will not disable my ad block

The pop up is ridiculous and is making the site unusable. I've had to click to dismiss it several times just trying to post this.

Fix the ads so they're not massive and intrusive and maybe I'll consider turning it off.

Hello @steff13 @IroningThrone if you (and anyone else with the same issue) could please share screenshots of the ads in question, that would be really helpful, thank you.

Or you could do proper testing, and not rely on users to report highly obvious issues?

I think the drive for profits is a mega turn-off, when you aren't providing basic functionality. Consider it an investment in retaining users.

randomchap · 04/03/2025 15:49

Have the number of ads increased since putting in the update. I had 7 on the last page. Seems excessive.

petermaddog · 04/03/2025 15:57

i use ublock no problem

I honestly just take no notice of any of the ads. What's the big deal?

My issue is I have have issues reading on screen without being distracted. The ads I see on here tend to be dynamic so my eye is drawn to them which makes the browsing experience harder and less enjoyable. As I'm on here for enjoyment it stops being a place to spend time. I also hate allowing cookies and MN won't allow me to reject them, unlike many other sites.

Gatekeeper · 04/03/2025 16:13

This is the screen on my phone...happens over and over to the point of wanting to hoy my phone out the window . I have to wait whilst it loads before I can scroll on and it is a bloody pain

@BeckyAMumsnet seeing as I didn't get a relevant email reply, are you able to assist please? I don't want to disable my ad blocker due to the hideously intrusive ads that you allow constantly on this site. I also don't want to pay a premium subscription for a not-premium website. Any tips?

Conkerjar · 04/03/2025 22:10

@wandawaves there are browsers that will do what you want :)

But will they stop this annoying mumsnet pop up? Because i currently use one but I'm getting the pop up to disable it...

Conkerjar · 05/03/2025 12:27

@wandawaves try Brave. So far no issue but it may not stay that way.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 05/03/2025 12:52

There isn't a website out there i will disable my ad block for. I'm not about to risk a website allowing through an ad that puts spyware on my computer, when i use paypal with all my credit cards etc that they could gain access to. As a disabled person that has no choice to buy most of my everyday stuff online as i can't just go out to the shops, it's not worth it.
Most websites don't employ the staff to rigorously check the safety of every single ad they put out, so if my personal data isn't a priority to them, then their profits from ads certainly isn't a priority to me!

Popfull · 05/03/2025 19:14

But unless you disable
you just keep getting the message to disable
so in a way - doesn’t leave any choice @Thegreatestoftheseislove

Edited

Not if you block it under hide distracting objects in the search bar if on an iphone/ipad.

May also be on android I have no idea.

Fed up of being bullied over everything these days.
This is just another example.
As someone else said "we are creating the content and interest to this site".
Everything is about money and greed.
No, not having it.
Spent a very pleasant hour browsing the internet without the pressures of being on Mumsnet.

That's horrific! Who wants to look at blatant , screen sized ads?

It's sheer greed.

I loathe and detest ads when they are smashed into the viewer's face like that, and it turns me OFF a product.

Adblockers have become so prevalent as advertisers have got greedier.

Trousername · 07/03/2025 21:06

When adverts make a site unreadable, then the site is doomed because readers will just go. Look at what Reach plc did to local papers (popups, sliding ads, flashing adverts, stupid intrusive videos you can't get rid of...) You'd have to be insane to tolerate that rubbish. Static ads are fine provided they don't obscure the text. I think subscription is the answer, but subscription has to be at a low enough level - for example the price of a cup of coffee once a month is fine (unless coffee gets unaffordable!), while £10 would make lots of people think twice.

I agree, very annoying. I have a block on the ads and if I have to remove it I will totally leave the site.
It isn't just the ads, it's the 'cookies' which come with them, harvesting data and I want the choice to reject cookies. MN isn't the only site to do this, I have noticed others on the internet....if I exercise my choice to reject cookies, I can't proceed unless I pay up or give them my email and data consent.
No, I just don't proceed. I take great care to leave as small a digital footprint as possible and I do not want to be part of some bloody marketing thing, so goodbye......

Will a browser that has more privacy such as Tor Browser work with MN?

I don't know about adverts, but the media sure likes forcing talentless celebs in our faces to dumb down society. They kept saying Kim Kardashian broke the internet with her nked pictures, but when I tried to read real news, her pictures were taking up half the page. Or they keep telling us to see tattoo necked washed up footballers and their orange wives as the ultimate in style and class.

coxesorangepippin · 25/03/2025 01:13

Seems if you use the app you don't get the ad blocker
