No, MN, I will not disable my ad block

The pop up is ridiculous and is making the site unusable. I've had to click to dismiss it several times just trying to post this.

Fix the ads so they're not massive and intrusive and maybe I'll consider turning it off.

I don't know if everyone gets the same ads, but ones I get are horribly obtrusive. They slide up and cover the whole page.

Same.

I can't remember what I did....I have a page that just has the thread and then two empty spaces with the text 'ADVERTISEMENT' in them. No ads. No request to turn off ad blockers...

LumpyandBumps · 03/03/2025 17:13

Well I did what was asked and deleted the Ad Blocker for this site.
Since then as well as getting distracting advertisements at the top and side of the screen, which flash/ move it is taking an age to move from one page to another. The page is also refreshing sometimes for no reason.
In a way it’s a good thing. It will help to wean me off of the site.
It’s completely pointless in terms of advertising as I would never support companies who think intrusive advertisements are acceptable.

Hmm.. but I do get some of the ads. They're quite unobtrusive though, just a panel down the side on desktop.

Hello @steff13 @IroningThrone if you (and anyone else with the same issue) could please share screenshots of the ads in question, that would be really helpful, thank you.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 03/03/2025 17:20

So we've either got to pay to be allowed to create the content that that attracts more traffic to mumsnet and makes advertisers want to pay mumsnet in order to advertise to said content creators and content readers
or
Be bombarded by adverts from the advertisers who pay mumsnet for access to the content creators and readers who are the product that mn is selling to these advertisers?

And we get?
Pros
busy site with lots of thi gs to chat about

Cons
Troll central
Security issues
Data leaks
Rogue interns or whatever she was who shared users personal data
Updates that always fuck up the site
Bugs that don't get fixed for months

I'll just stop using MN then, I don't want to see ads and don't want to be bullied into it. I'd rather just not bother

Same.

My blocker has an “allow acceptable ads” that lets through noninvasive ads. Why can’t Mumsnet only use ads that meet that criteria?

MargaretThursday · 03/03/2025 18:04

It keeps saying that for me, but I never have had an ad blocker on MN. I see the adverts.

I will say that I have never been tempted to look at any of the adverts beyond thinking I'm not interested. I had one last week advertising an advent calendar. I assume left over from last year rather than early for this year.

Same. I use safari and it’s “block distracting features” to get rid of it.

Fed up of soooooo many ads.

Yep. Safari is the way to go.

UndermyShoeJoe · 03/03/2025 18:14

I’m going to save so much wasted time if I’ve got to click continue without every thread because eugh I have an add blocker for a reason. They were also huge and annoying distracting from actually using the forum.

I get those on my tablet but not on my phone. I don't know why.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 03/03/2025 18:18

I'm getting this disable adblocker message and also seeing adverts! Lucky old me.

Screw that for a game of soldiers.

That's why i use an ad blocker.

TheFirstTimeEverISawYourFace · 03/03/2025 18:22

I honestly just take no notice of any of the ads. What's the big deal?

gamerchick · 03/03/2025 18:24

Misaster · 03/03/2025 16:40

But let’s face it…. No one saying they will cease to ever use mumsnet again, will actually follow through

name changes galore on the horizon

Aye.

IMissSparkling · 03/03/2025 18:26

How are you using the site? I'm on my phone, no ad blocker and I can navigate the pages just fine. 🤷‍♀️

AlphaApple · 03/03/2025 18:26

Yes I can't bear the ads that move and slide about. It gives me the rage. I don't mind some ads but the slow loading, flying around and flashing at the side of the screen gives me a migraine. @BeckyAMumsnet can't you just have "normal" ads?

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 03/03/2025 18:29

TheFirstTimeEverISawYourFace · 03/03/2025 18:22

Me neither. I've wasted so much time on the Internet I've developed the ability to blank out all adverts. They don't even register any more.

It's really more the principle I think. MN sells its users to advertisers and being told by a member of mnhq that you're a freeloader if you block ads or don't buy premium membership got a lot of people's backs up.

"Piggybacking" I believe was the term used in the thread where they initially announced restricting access to the site.

IPM · 03/03/2025 18:31

Misaster · 03/03/2025 16:41

The type of mumsnetters to be so irritated by this, is precisely the mumsnetter that likely spend quite a bit of time on mumsnet! 😂

Well yes, quite.

Aren't they exactly the sort of people MNHQ are trying to attract though?

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 03/03/2025 18:31

I had a holiday ad that covered up the navigation buttons (active/ I’m on etc) so I couldn’t use the site.

Agree that some ads are intrusive. I don’t mind too much the ones that are in the body of text but the ones at top and bottom are intrusive and distracting. I have my screen set to dark and the ads are white so even more jarring.

And yes lots of refreshing happening unbidden.

Redrosesposies · 03/03/2025 18:34

I view on a tablet, rarely on my phone and don't have an Adblocker. The Ads I get tend to be from websites I have recently visited anyway so not really inappropriate but the last couple of days I have had blips (refreshes?) followed by massive Ads that render the page totally unreadable apart from maybe one line at the bottom. The only way to get rid of it is to come out of MN then go back in.
I had this a few months ago with a massive M&S advert that wouldn't clear. I raised it with MN at the time and eventually it stopped.

aspidernamedfluffy · 03/03/2025 18:36

I'm loving the part that says "to continue your visit to the site without interruption"

Like having bloody great ads that you can't make disappear doesn't cause interruption? Whoever worded that was clearly at the cooking sherry, "without interruption" indeed. 😂

Whyherewego · 03/03/2025 18:37

IroningThrone · 03/03/2025 16:36

I do.

I'll just stop using the site.

I use an incognito tab instead
