Bin men! Ridiculous

SassyCrab · 06/02/2025 18:54

Has anyone else got this problem with there local council! The bin men take the rubbish every 2 weeks, so our rubbish mounts up to the point we have to put it on top of the bin, bare in mind we have baby and a dog so we have quite a lot of rubbish in the two weeks when they bother to collect. They’ve come yesterday and emptied our bin but just left the rubbish on the top!!!!! So now our bin is full again and still got 2 weeks to go. So annoyed with it, I just don’t understand why they can’t come every week.

Well they don’t set the timetable for starters.

Secondly they don’t take bags not in the bin for H&S reasons, they can be heavy, they can split etc.

Ours have always been fortnightly collections and even with two kids in nappies we managed. Are you recycling everything you possibly can?

Runningoutofthyme · 06/02/2025 18:59

do a tip run then you start with a clean slate and won’t have this issue again?

Springadorable · 06/02/2025 18:59

We have a black bag limit of two bags every two weeks which is less than a wheely bin. We have a one year old and a three year old. You just have to recycle everything you can (which is why they are so stingy with collections). I do agree it's annoying though.

TwentyTwentyFive · 06/02/2025 19:00

Most councils say they can't take extra rubbish so not sure why you're blaming the bin men. Take your extra rubbish to the tip if you find it difficult to manage the fortnightly collections. Although most people manage so I'd also suggest looking at how much you're throwing away and whether you can reduce the amount or recycle more.

Needmorelego · 06/02/2025 19:01

If you aren't entitled to a second bin or a bigger bin you can get a gadget that squashes your rubbish down so you can get more in.
Unfortunately this is what it's like everywhere 🙁

CoffeeBeansGalore · 06/02/2025 19:02

Ours is 3 weekly. We end up doing a tip run.

The Council will usually only take what you can fit in the bin with the lid shut. It's your responsibility to take any excess to the tip. If your circumstances warrant it, you may be able to apply for a bigger bin from the council (usually with a cost attached). Check your Council website to find out.

Well they must’ve picked up the bin bags to empty the bin and then put them back, so I don’t see how that’s a valid point. I’m blaming the council who do set the time table, our recycling bin is full too but probably don’t recycle as much as we should admittedly

Can you recycle more? We barely fill two bags in a fortnight but the recycling piles up in the garage when oh goes a bit Amazon crazy

Go to the tip.

I love the way people assume that everyone has a car and can actually get to their local tip.

QuirkyWriter · 06/02/2025 19:04

waste collection has been in the bin only for years! If you’re filling a bin and extra then you’re buying and chucking too much. Recycle as much as possible, squash things down thoroughly.

RentalWoesNotFun · 06/02/2025 19:04

Ours won't take extra. If you have extra you need to dispose of it yourself at the council tip.

It's free to drop it off. Lots of people make a once a week or once a fortnight bin run.

You can arrange for a private bin lorry to come to your house also. It could be worth it if there are lots of neighbours in the same position. You'd need to ask though and bring a proposal fir multiple houses to the bin company. It's not cheap apparently.

😄 there's always one. Most people do.

Yes they picked them up to place them on the floor, not to schlep them over to the back of the lorry and chuck them in.

gamerchick · 06/02/2025 19:04

Is this your first house?

They don't take rubbish not in the bin. You need to recycle everything you can. Squish stuff down.

Be thankful it's 2 weeks. Ours is moving to monthly this year.

TickingAlongNicely · 06/02/2025 19:05

Have you checked to see if you can get an extra collection for nappies? Some councils do them.

MelisandeLongfield · 06/02/2025 19:05

This thread is going to fill up with people saying their family of eight's rubbish for the entire year fits into an empty baked bean tin 😆

If you don't have a car then you need to pay someone to take your extra rubbish away or see if someone will do a trip run for you. There are alternatives.

Where I live it's the recycling bins that are usually overflowing.
People want to recycle but councils don't always make it easy to do.
The whole system sucks in my opinion.

SpringBunnyHopHop · 06/02/2025 19:06

They never take extra bags. Does your council do bulky waste collections? It’s fairly cheap.

I use bags for life instead of bin liners. Get way more in the bin.

Why do we pay council tax?

Yes but why should people have to do that?
Councils should be collecting peoples rubbish and recycling. Why provide a system but then do it half arsed?

Orangelight23 · 06/02/2025 19:07

Ours is the same with recycling in between. We manage fine with 4 of us. Struggled a bit due to a missed collection when the weather was bad but still managed.

JaimeLannister · 06/02/2025 19:08

Our rubbish collection is every 3 weeks and recycling weekly. Are you recycling everything you can?
