Bin men! Ridiculous

Has anyone else got this problem with there local council! The bin men take the rubbish every 2 weeks, so our rubbish mounts up to the point we have to put it on top of the bin, bare in mind we have baby and a dog so we have quite a lot of rubbish in the two weeks when they bother to collect. They’ve come yesterday and emptied our bin but just left the rubbish on the top!!!!! So now our bin is full again and still got 2 weeks to go. So annoyed with it, I just don’t understand why they can’t come every week.

I've got it in my hip. If only id had a washing machine.

all you have done with that sarcasm is made yourself look extremely thick As i posted upthread (but it obvs escaped your low attention span) the rreason elderly women of older generations have arthritis in their wrists and hands is from wringing out wet washing.

Where I live we don't have Council tax but we do have only property taxes. Our black sacks are collected fortnightly and have to have a paid sticker on them at £3.38 for the larger bag, that certainly makes you think of what you are just chucking in the black waste bag! If you don't have a sticker on the bag, it's not collected.
The rest of our food and recycling is collected on a weekly basis and it does work.

Not everyone has room in a freezer for waste food, some of which will be there for several days. Where are you putting dirty nappies if you have a baby or toddler? In the freezer as well?
I do not mind rinsing out the odd tin to put in my recycling bag, because I keep it in my utility room. Also, many do not have a food waste dedicated bin, so the general bin is going to be wet inside if you put in a bag of frozen food waste. Everything put in good quality bin bags straight from the kitchen dustbin will work, of course, but not in summer.
The point - the main reason - for waste collection is the prevention of vermin and disease. Full bins in summer left for two (sometimes 3) weeks do not fulfil this purpose.
I also think having three or four separate (usually bulky) bins in gardens, or yards is an inconvenience. Where are they going? Are we not allowed to have nice gardens anymore.
Also, some multi-occupied houses will have these bins in the front garden or on the street - not something a country interested in how it looks should be encouraging. Nothing says 'grotty country' more than bins, sometimes very full bins, on the street or in front yards.

So what do you think the solution is? Shall we just go back to burning / burying all rubbish???

Do you think you are entitled to a nice garden at the expense of future generations??

(I agree that freezing food waste is mental)... Our food waste is collected weekly. The rest of the bins are not a problem for vermin, summer or otherwise. And again our bins are collected on a 3 weekly cycle!

Not everyone has the space for multiple bins in the garden though. We keep ours in the front garden but not everyone in our road can do that as the front gardens belong to the ground floor maisonettes.

Our food waste is collected weekly but we do freeze it sometimes, depending on what it is. I'm not having it stinking out the bin. General waste bins can and do smell. Ours used to smell in the hot weather when we had a cat because of the food pouches and clearing out the litter tray and garden which is another reason they can stay in the front garden!

Needmorelego · 08/02/2025 15:02

If I had my way there would be a simple 3 bin system that's universal.
1 - the recycling bin. Anything that has the potential to be recycled goes in here and is sent to be sorted and then the relevant items get sent to the relevant recycling plant.
2 - Garden/Food waste. If you don't have a garden you can opt for a smaller food bin.
3 - non recycling rubbish.
3 bins. 3 universal colours that are the same wherever you live and whether the bin is regular size or extra large or a communal dumpster.
The bins should be collecting weekly.
In my utopia anyway.

snoopyfanaccountant · 08/02/2025 15:08

Our garden/food waste bin is emptied every second week. The other 3 bins (non-recyclable, paper/cardboard and plastic/glass/tins) are emptied on a 3 week cycle. The only one which is ever full is the garden waste if we have been doing a lot of gardening.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 08/02/2025 15:09

That's how it should be @Needmorelego! I'm sure more people would recycle if it was more straightforward.

The problem with recycling everything in one bin is that paper and cardboard get wet from tins and bottles and it then can't be recycled.

I think we should use less packaging and waste less food. I think we should cease to be a consumerist society - this is what has driven the waste disposal problem. In 1974 I bought a washing machine. It lasted till 2006, perfectly efficiently (my ex kept it). I have had about 6 washing machines since 1996 - all of which stopped working at all after about five years and were 'not worth repairing' (and no parts - built in obscelencence) so I had to buy another one. That really has to stop, and it has employment repurcussions which we will then have to address, so it is not easy, but must be done.
But six waste bins and a bit of plastic recyling is really sticking a plaster on a canyon.
As it happens, I recycle a lot and produce very little food waste (I also feed birds in winter and early spring, when food is scarce). I cannot name one piece of furniture in my house that I bought new, they are all 'recycled' - mostly Victoriana or, like the sofa and chairs in the sittingroom, bought second hand. This is how people used to live and we have departed from that situation to our detriment.
Neo-liberal consumerist capitalism is not a sustainable way for the world to continue.

Why would tins and bottles be wet?

From being washed.

Then dry them?

BobnLen · 08/02/2025 15:35

Obviously a lot of the problem with waste is people having children and pets, if people kept to one child and no horrible hound or moggie, there wouldn't be a problem, which is what I did

Doesn’t matter according to the loonies on this thread who are all wetting the cardboard to stuff more in the bin…

To be honest I didn't know that meant cardboard/paper couldn't be recycled.
When recycling first started in my hometown back in the 90s paper and card went in a box. When you left it for the bin men you were required to leave the lid off.
This is in England......where it rains a lot !

I don’t have children so I presume I can have a moggie under your batshit idea? My cat created far less waste than humans

Wish we did it like other countries where they just have big commercial bins and recycling bins in local neighbourhoods. Would surely make it a lot easier and cheaper for them to collect from as well as being more hygienic and cleaner.

The trouble with this is that these big bins have to be close to one persons house. It is OK if it is not near yours but not OK if it is.
I also think that everyone being responsible for their own bin space is good. It makes people cut down.

Unless you get dickheads like the people in the flats where I used to live. We had communal bins and it was great, until some brainless twat put a bathroom sink and toilet in the bin. I reported it to the management company who eventually sorted it but the needless to say the bins weren’t emptied until they did

They don't have to be near one person's house, but I guess it depends where you live.

It doesn't make me cut down, I just bought a commercial bin and carried on. TBH considering upgrading to a bigger one and charging the neighbours, I could probably make a profit.

When I lived in the Netherlands these bins were underground. You had a keycard that was registered to your address to open the bin slot. You got so many bags a year and you’d have to pay extra if you went over. It didn’t smell there was no evidence of rubbish. Much better than our current system.

I have big communal bins because I am in a block of flats.
People do seem to go for the "If it fits I will put in in there" concept.
Picture is of a skip....but you get the idea !

My dog still has accidents as he’s a stubborn frenchie so we use puppy mats for him if we go out, so that’s rubbish that goes in the outside bin & we waste a lot of food where the shopping dates are rubbish and our freezer isn’t working unfortunately.

Herein lies the problem. You can get washable nappies and puppy pads, plus meal plan to avoid wasting so much food. We waste minimal amounts with planning. It's also better for your finances and the environment.

getsomehelp · 08/02/2025 16:31

I recycle everything recyclable, & We are obliged to compost now (eu country) its amazing how much kitchen waste is actually compostable, including paper & cardboard.
Get a composter if you have a garden, & a small compost bucket for kitchen waste, it will help ?

Zanatdy · 08/02/2025 16:37

Clearly you’re not recycling enough. Yes you need to wash our jars and tins, takes 30 seconds. I rinse all containers such as milk and fizzy drink. Food waste in a caddy in the kitchen then in the bigger container outside. If you recycle properly, you shouldn’t have too much waste. Sounds like you need to shop every few days to save on wastage, not just food waste but money too.
