Bin men! Ridiculous

SassyCrab · 06/02/2025 18:54

Has anyone else got this problem with there local council! The bin men take the rubbish every 2 weeks, so our rubbish mounts up to the point we have to put it on top of the bin, bare in mind we have baby and a dog so we have quite a lot of rubbish in the two weeks when they bother to collect. They’ve come yesterday and emptied our bin but just left the rubbish on the top!!!!! So now our bin is full again and still got 2 weeks to go. So annoyed with it, I just don’t understand why they can’t come every week.

😄 there's always one. Most people do.

Depends where you live. In London it's more normal NOT to own a car.

Literallynoonecares · 06/02/2025 19:08

Our general household waste is 3 weekly, recycling bins they collect weekly. We fill our recycling bins each week but our household waste one easily goes the 3 weeks. There are two of us but it was the same when our 2 daughters lived here. I think you need to try and recycle more stuff.

gamerchick · 06/02/2025 19:04

Is this your first house?

They don't take rubbish not in the bin. You need to recycle everything you can. Squish stuff down.

Be thankful it's 2 weeks. Ours is moving to monthly this year.

Yeah it is! Well I know just to stack it up inside the bin instead of ontop of the lid 🙃

Why do we pay council tax?

Is that a genuine question? Everyone pays council tax and unfortunately if you generate excessive rubbish then yes you'll have to pay to have it removed. They can't just take extra bags because some households are just throwing lots away. Confused

gamerchick · 06/02/2025 19:08

You could always sneak some to work and use work bins. A few of us did that during the strikes. That went on for most of the year.

BuiIdingBridges · 06/02/2025 19:09

How much rubbish does a dog create? Baby yes ok, because of nappies, but a dog?

TheFlis · 06/02/2025 19:09

You admit you don’t recycle as much as you should! There’s your issue. If they take endless amounts of rubbish there is no incentive for people to be responsible and sort their waste.

We have no kids but a dog, and we rarely even fill one bin bag per fortnight as we are diligent with recycling. If you have a little one, most councils do separate bags you can order for nappies.

Cheezewizz · 06/02/2025 19:09

Struggled with overflowing rubbish when they switched to bi weekly collection but I started recycling all my soft plastic at coop/supermarket and it makes a big difference to the amount of rubbish going in the black bin, at least one or two bin bags less a fortnight.

SassyCrab · 06/02/2025 19:02

Well they must’ve picked up the bin bags to empty the bin and then put them back, so I don’t see how that’s a valid point. I’m blaming the council who do set the time table, our recycling bin is full too but probably don’t recycle as much as we should admittedly

But that’s been a rule since wheelie bins came in to force in the 90s. Your bin has to close. Everyone knows that. If you have extra you need to be better at recycling or take it to the tip. You are only a 3 person family. Admittedly nappies take up room but our council provides bags and will collect those separately to the rubbish. I have three dogs and they don’t create any rubbish at all. The empty bag their foods comes in I suppose but it’s an empty bag so takes up no room. Boxes of dog biscuits go in recycling.

TickingAlongNicely · 06/02/2025 19:13

We had the same rule in Germany by the way... one small wheelie bin for a 4 person family every two weeks. At 5 people you could apply for a bigger one.

My dog still has accidents as he’s a stubborn frenchie so we use puppy mats for him if we go out, so that’s rubbish that goes in the outside bin & we waste a lot of food where the shopping dates are rubbish and our freezer isn’t working unfortunately.

PackItUpPackItIn · 06/02/2025 19:13

Ours is every other week. Sometimes we have extra and I have to ask someone to take it to the tip for me if I can't fit it all in the bin.

How is the dog making extra mess? A dog food bag and shit bags maybe? But I can't see how that makes much of a difference.

ForRealCat · 06/02/2025 19:14

My new neighbours have asked if they can put rubbish in my bin, apparently they've noticed mine in rarely even half full so I have plenty of space....worrying thing is because the lid is always shut they can only have known that if they are opening it to check 😳cheeky fuckers I told them no.

That aside, there is only so much rubbish people can cut down to, and most families are struggling, and many councils are talking about reducing the frequency further. I don't know how they expect most people to manage.

You can get washable puppy pads, might help?

henlake7 · 06/02/2025 19:15

So many rules! Round here you can chuck out umpteen black bags every week and they will be taken, recycling too. The bin men are very accomodating.

TBF though it's because it's all long rows of terraces that open directly onto the street so bins wouldn't work.
All things considered id rather have a bin if I got a front garden as well!

Sadcafe · 06/02/2025 19:15

One of the issues with rubbish/ recycling is the lack of consistency across the country with what can and cannot be recycled and therefore ends up in rubbish, so called soft plastic being a prime example

PorridgeOatsSuck · 06/02/2025 19:15

Sorry you are struggling op. Disgraceful that household waste isn't being picked up. Basically bins are one of the most visible, tangible points of contact with the council. Our pickup is one black bin every fortnight. Fine for an elderly couple, not fine for a family of five or I imagine for people with babies. Our local tip is basically a recycle centre and won't take black bins. Equally it won't take mattresses and often charges for other items. Then we get them tipped in our gateway 😬. The people running this country don't have a clue about the point of their existence. Why pay council tax when little of tangible value comes back?

AnotherDayAnotherIdea · 06/02/2025 19:16

The council WANTS you to reduce your food waste, and this is how they are expressing that.

You either need a compost heap or to be more careful when shopping.

My partner is the worst for it, he won’t care and put it in someone else’s bin but I’ve told him off many times for it 🙈 and yeah it’s hard to manage, I feel like we have a lot of deliveries so our recycling is full up to the top& then like I said we just have a lot of food wastage where our freezer isn’t working and everything just mounts up I suppose.

Why do we pay council tax?

Here’s a list, I can see a few things missing, but its a starter for ten -

  • Youth services
  • Libraries
  • Parks, open spaces and galleries
  • Leisure facilities, including swimming pools and recreation centres
  • Social care for older people, children and other vulnerable members of the community
  • Support for the voluntary sector
  • Planning and building control
  • Refuse collection, street cleaning and other environmental issues
  • Maintenance of roads and bridges
  • Traffic management and road safety
  • Parking services and control
  • Elections, registrars of births, marriages and deaths
  • Cemeteries, crematoria and mortuary services
  • Consumer protection
  • Economic development and regeneration
  • Community development services
  • Housing, including the provision of social housing, housing strategy and advice and services for the homeless
  • Housing Benefits and Council Tax administration.

Why would this bother you ? If I've got room I'd be more than happy for my neighbours to do so, at least they asked !
I live in one of the few councils left that have weekly collections and no limit as long as bags aren't overfilled ( we don't have wheelie bins ) my family often do a rubbish run day before bin day as their neighbouring councils aren't so generous !

I don't mind people putting bags in once its out to be fair, but I didn't want them filling my bin during the weeks and not having any room myself!!!

Thank you! Someone who’s understanding, the thing that’s contradicting when I lived in a flat we had to put our rubbish outside of the bin otherwise they wouldn’t take it, all councils are different so these “rules” don’t apply to every council
