Your dog is not your babies 'brother'

Watching ITV news tonight about XL bullies. The amount of money it's costing to Kennel prior to pts, £1000 per dog per month! Huge amount.

Anyway, this delusional owner has one with her 5 month old baby girl. She reckons she knows the dog so well that she knows he wouldn't hurt his 'sister' and that he knows he's her babies big brother.

I mean I like some dogs but aibu to think you're a big delusional if you call them brothers or sisters to your actual children.

Aibu? ynbu no they are like brother and sister

Yanbu these folk are out of touch they are dogs

I watched the programme in shock
A 5 month old non toddling girl and an XL bully who is referred to as little girls bug brother.

Why do people refer to dogs like they are people?

Anyone who has a dog like that with a baby or child should have their child removed for their safety.

I totally refer to my dogs as my child’s siblings though - but in a joking way.

Overtheatlantic · 29/01/2025 19:56

Because most people are shits and dogs are better.

Thisandthatandthensome · 29/01/2025 19:56

Oh dear.

Yabu they are like brother and sister

Yanbu dogs are not brothers or sisters

It’s fairly common to human sibilings to injury each other on purpose, including biting.

PlumFairies · 29/01/2025 19:57

YANBU a - even fur babies also grinds my gears 🤨

FirepIace · 29/01/2025 19:58

I am disgusted by that amount of money being wasted to keep these monsters alive. Just pink juice them, and put the money towards nurses or hospitals.

Definitely NBU re the dog sibling nonsense.

Not sure a sibling has ever mauled another sibling to death though.

Not sure a human wd bite you or savage you to death though.

I was surprised. 25 million expected to be cost to Kennel, vet cost, police etc . Surely owner should contribute.

Needs speeding up process. Some Kennels are profiteering £1000 a month per dog is ridiculous

Whycanineverthinkofone · 29/01/2025 20:02

It’s frightening that she thinks the dog understands the concept of “sister”

of course it doesn’t know it’s the baby’s “big brother”, it’s a dog!

this increasing anthropomorphism will really damage pets eventually. I overheard one woman in a vet on about her dogs collar and how she needed to get a pink one, and projecting all sorts of stupid human gender stereotypes on to the dog.

they’re dogs ffs.

They need to cull them immediately. This is an outrageous expense when we have people living in poverty, children starving, not enough money for social workers etc, THOUSANDS of more worthwhile things to spend that kind of money on.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 29/01/2025 20:02

YANBU about the dangerous dogs.

YABU to think anyone actually believes their dog is their child's sibling. It's an affectionate and/or jokey way of referring to the bond between the child and the animal. You can find it silly or annoying, but it's not 'delusional' Hmm

MoggetsCollar · 29/01/2025 20:02

Oh dear, we call the cat my teenage DS' sister all the time. They really are very similar- always either sleeping or looking for food.

Totally agree. I was shocked at the waste of money

You can’t fix stupid. Most of these repulsive dogs are owned by the thickest of imbeciles.

YeOldeGreyhound · 29/01/2025 20:04

The issue about XL bullies aside, people can refer to their pets however they want. It takes nothing from anyone else.

According to the o/p this woman not only calls it the child’s brother, but seems to think the dog understands it’s the big brother, and the brother sister relationship, and gives that as her reasoning as to why the dog won’t hurt the child…

fucking dangerous.

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/01/2025 20:05

Not sure a sibling has ever mauled another sibling to death though.

My brother was violent. A friend of mine's brother tried to stab her. Another's sister has exceptionally violent.

The issue isn't the 'sibling' nonsense OP, it's basic risk assessment of their children's welfare.

moggiek · 29/01/2025 20:06

I just couldn’t believe that she had that dog in the same house as her beautiful baby 😮

AnneElliott · 29/01/2025 20:06

I think people who have big dogs and small children in the house are plain stupid.

But I definitely used to refer to my cats as DSs sisters Blush. In fact he used to tell people he had twin sisters - it's only when people asked their names it became clear they're weren't human!

IfYouHaveGhosts · 29/01/2025 20:07

Humans are the most dangerous animals in the planet. There will be many cases where siblings have murdered family members.
