Your dog is not your babies 'brother'

Watching ITV news tonight about XL bullies. The amount of money it's costing to Kennel prior to pts, £1000 per dog per month! Huge amount.

Anyway, this delusional owner has one with her 5 month old baby girl. She reckons she knows the dog so well that she knows he wouldn't hurt his 'sister' and that he knows he's her babies big brother.

I mean I like some dogs but aibu to think you're a big delusional if you call them brothers or sisters to your actual children.

Aibu? ynbu no they are like brother and sister

Yanbu these folk are out of touch they are dogs

Anyone who denies a fundamental fact, that dogs are animals, is a moron.

You can love them dearly, and they can love you.

But you can never trust them completely, you can't read their mind, you can't always trust that training will hold 100% and you never know when instincts or pain will make them behave in an unpredictable way.

It's always seemed absolutely insane to me that anyone would have an animal they couldn't confidently and quickly overcome around their children.

My chihuahua is well bred, well trained and a sweetheart. As an added bonus, if she ever did decide to suddenly turn into a ravenous hell beast, my youngest could punt her over a fence with ease.

JessiesJ99 · 29/01/2025 20:35

The thing that seems odd about the XL bully attacks/ deaths is that a fair few of them seem to be on the owner.

I know you could say maybe the owner abused them but in 2 separate cases that spring to mind the owners were female and according to everyone who knew them they couldn't have been any kinder, more loving to these dogs. In one case, the dog slept in her bed with her, and she referred to him as her baby.

They just seem to have gone completely mad & turned on them.

It's seems v unusual for a dog to attack its owner, I think 🤔

I'm a cat person, so 🤷😂😹

MassiveSalad22 · 29/01/2025 20:36

Why do they need to be kennelled for time (a month!!?) before being PTS?? Presuming an amnesty, just feed them all poison/production line euthanise them and don’t waste any extra money on them.

People talking about human siblings…. Since when has a human sibling got jaws powerful enough to bite their human sibling to death??

JessiesJ99 · 29/01/2025 20:38

Although I do think that XL bullies could be good police dogs....?

🤔🤣😬

DoggoQuestions · 29/01/2025 20:39

I hate it (and fur babies) but my 11yo and 6yo refer to Ddog as their brother and call themselves sister. I don't stop them saying it, just cringe inside.

I think people who have big dogs and small children in the house are plain stupid.

But I definitely used to refer to my cats as DSs sisters Blush. In fact he used to tell people he had twin sisters - it's only when people asked their names it became clear they're weren't human!

Do you apply that to all dogs or just bull breeds? We had a Labrador cross when I was a baby and when she died we got an Old English Sheepdog. Were they too big?

Astrak · 29/01/2025 20:42

When my now fully-grown son was a baby, I had a very well-bred German Shepherd Dog. I spent a fortune on buying and training her, via Local Authority training courses and a three-day private training course with Barbara Woodhouse, a world-famous dog trainer.
The GSD had two really long walks daily (we lived in open countryside) was out in our large, securely-fenced garden a lot and I practiced training every single day, right up to the day that she was pts, aged thirteen.
My son was closely-supervised all the times he was around her and he was never, ever left alone with her.

It cost me a fortune in time, money and inconvenience to ensure that both the dog and the child were safe in the same house. I don't think that many people today have the resources or time to mix babies/children and potentially dangerous animals in such a way.

Whycanineverthinkofone · 29/01/2025 20:07

Humans are the most dangerous animals in the planet. There will be many cases where siblings have murdered family members.

and that's why we need dog legislation......

Temporaryname158 · 29/01/2025 20:45

Me and my sister are both blond with long hair, when we got a yellow furred golden retriever as tweens we joked she was our little sister. It was just a family joke though, we quite clearly knew she was the family pet but she was very loved.

its a totally different situation to the bonkers people dressing dogs up or worst still keeping killer dogs with children. There should be a law against XL bullies in homes with ANY children, resident or visiting

Ihopeithinkiknow · 29/01/2025 20:46

I couldn't give a shit what people refer to their dogs as tbh it's a non issue compared to actually having a dog like that around children

Bupster · 29/01/2025 20:49

I never understood why people got so soppy over dogs. Then I got my first dog, and dear God, the emotional connection and the sheer love still surprises and overwhelms me nearly every day, and surpasses anything I could ever have expected.

I still don't think I'm his parent though.

My nieces call their dog their brother, but nobody in the household (including the kids) believes this to be true, or thinks that the dog should have the same status or role in the family - let alone that he would understand any of this and take on the responsibilities, FFS. Also he's the size of a squirrel.

Because most people are shits and dogs are better.

I’m very wary of people with this mindset. Dogs don’t have the complexities of human beings and relationships and IME a certain type of person ‘prefers’ the company of something obedient that doesn’t answer back as opposed to a human relationship that might not go their way

JandamiHash · 29/01/2025 20:52

Bristolinfeb · 29/01/2025 19:56

It’s fairly common to human sibilings to injury each other on purpose, including biting.

Never known a sibling to maul another to death

Well to be fair the majority of dogs aren't arseholes like a lot of humans

A lot of dogs belong to people with partners and children.

Hahahahahahahah what? Yeah my toddler frequently mauls her sister to death 🙄 behave

BatchCookBabe · 29/01/2025 20:56

YANBU. I saw this news feature, and was also disgusted. Anyone with a child should NEVER be allowed an XL Bully. (And if they're caught with one the child(ren) should be taken off them and placed into care!)

And it grinds my gears too, when people call their dog their child's brother! (Or sister!) How daft. Hmm

adviceneeded1990 · 29/01/2025 20:57

🙈 my DSD calls the dog her big sis! Not an XL though to be fair, aging Labrador whose worst crime is stealing an unattended sandwich.

wheretheheckissummer · 29/01/2025 20:57

I do not think that anyone should keep dogs like this. However would you have started the thread if you heard someone referring to their pug/spaniel etc as their child's sibling?

Pets are a huge part of families, and there is nothing wrong with referring to them as such. (And yes I do have dogs, and I am their mum 😛)

HollyKnight · 29/01/2025 20:57

My mum used to call her dog her son. She would often get his name mixed up with my brother's - her actual son. It didn't hurt anyone. And it has nothing to do with people keeping murder dogs.

Comedycook · 29/01/2025 20:58

Its outrageous that public money is being used to kennel and look after these dogs....FFS, we can barely look after actual human beings properly. The owners should pay.

Oh dear, we call the cat my teenage DS' sister all the time. They really are very similar- always either sleeping or looking for food.

Must be a Cat Thing
I have DS and DD ( human) and a brother/sister pair of cats .

They are "favourite brother/favourite sister"

The dogs were seized. Hardly the owners choice to keep them in kennels.
