Your dog is not your babies 'brother'

Watching ITV news tonight about XL bullies. The amount of money it's costing to Kennel prior to pts, £1000 per dog per month! Huge amount.

Anyway, this delusional owner has one with her 5 month old baby girl. She reckons she knows the dog so well that she knows he wouldn't hurt his 'sister' and that he knows he's her babies big brother.

I mean I like some dogs but aibu to think you're a big delusional if you call them brothers or sisters to your actual children.

Aibu? ynbu no they are like brother and sister

Yanbu these folk are out of touch they are dogs

People humanising dogs are a big part of the problem. My dog is part of our family but he's a dog. The kids see him as a dog.

Oh goody! It's been aaaaaaggges since we had a dog bashing thread.

Is it dog bashing? Or is it bashing owners who think their children are safe because they credit the dog with human thinking and emotions, which leads to putting others in danger?

MrsTerryPratchett · 29/01/2025 20:09

People do die of domestic violence, yes @FirepIace including at the hands of siblings. 'Honour' (awful term for it) killings spring to mind.

VotingForYourself · 29/01/2025 20:09

Who has to pay the £1000 a month? The council??

Ylvamoon · 29/01/2025 20:10

My dogs are the better behaved offspring in my pack of wolves!
I mean if I tell my teenagers to leave the chicken drumsticks they just shrug and continue eating... the dogs will drop them and look ar me with big apologetic eyes!

Amybelle88 · 29/01/2025 20:12

I've got a beagle. One of the most docile, friendly breeds with a gorgeous temperament.

However, she's a dog. She's not the 'sister'.

I'm a dog person, my friend has pocket bullies and I've spent A LOT of time with them - they are extremely well behaved and trained but she has put an unbelievable about of time into them. Not everyone can do this, me included.

I do believe pocket bullies aren't as dangerous as XL, they are bred with patterdales so the genetic makeup is different. Even she says the XL breed is a whole new kettle of fish and there is zero chance I'd let one around my kids. Ever. No matter how much some protested that they were good.

All dogs are animals and have the potential to turn, although genetics and environment obviously play a big part in the likelihood of it happening. However, there are few that are capable of the level of damage that an XL can do.

YeOldeGreyhound · 29/01/2025 20:04

The issue about XL bullies aside, people can refer to their pets however they want. It takes nothing from anyone else.

Watching the programme it was clear she actually meant it. Didn't see danger since she had humanised her dog , concerning for a dangerous animal that the xl can be

I call myself mum, and dh dad to my pets. But I don’t call them furbabies or say they are my childrens siblings

This.

I'm appalled at the owner not the dog. The owner is delusional

MaltipooMama · 29/01/2025 20:15

I hate to admit that I refer to my 5kg maltipoo as my son's "big sister" 🙈 in reality it's obviously tongue in cheek as clearly I know they're not biologically related...

On a serious note though despite my puppy being about half the size of my son, I would never leave them alone together without me or my partner there. I'm fully aware that animals have a certain level of unpredictability regardless of their breed or environment and I would never in a million years take the risk. Although at this stage I'd probably be more likely to walk into my toddler bopping her on the head more than the other way around.

Carpetmoths · 29/01/2025 20:16

I think big dogs and children don’t mix in general, and the idea of a bully dog living with a child makes me feel a bit ill.

However, I call my mums’ dogs my children’s uncles because the idea of a dog being an uncle makes me laugh 🤷‍♀️

Lowhangingfruitisthebest · 29/01/2025 20:17

I tell my dogs to go to their 'brother' or 'sister'.

  1. It's just a term of endearment
  2. I am fully aware my dogs are not biologically related to my children.
  3. My children are teenagers and my dogs are Springer Spaniels.

I absolutely hate XL bullies and their amoeba brained owners but just because some people use certain words at home doesn't make them ineffective owners! The dog/owner bashing on here has got out of control!

Thisandthatandthensome · 29/01/2025 20:17

Whycanineverthinkofone · 29/01/2025 20:05

According to the o/p this woman not only calls it the child’s brother, but seems to think the dog understands it’s the big brother, and the brother sister relationship, and gives that as her reasoning as to why the dog won’t hurt the child…

fucking dangerous.

That's correct. Owner said he won't hurt her , she's his sister. Unbelievable

Agree with pp. I don’t think it’s dog bashing. More like stupid people bashing.

Chypre · 29/01/2025 20:20

Nope, they are not big brothers. In this house, they are grand pawrents, and the baby is their grand child. Just as with any older grand parent with health issues (sight, hearing, arthritis), it is definitely not safe to leave them together unsupervised.

LeavesTrees · 29/01/2025 20:27

I have to admit I use the word brother/sister and mum and dad with my dog. He’s a small dog.
I think the words we use are far less important and not worth worrying about compared to the people treating their dogs badly, encouraging bad behaviours in their dogs because they think it’s “cute” or “naughty” and having dogs who are known to kill humans around their children - that’s where the real problems lie.

HousedInMySoul · 29/01/2025 20:27

A sibling may be violent to another sibling, but at least if the sibling is human, there would be some chance of someone else trying to prevent any injury or death happening

When an XL bully loses it, it's gonna take police marksmen shooting it several times before it can be stopped

That's the difference, obviously

TomatoSandwiches · 29/01/2025 20:28

People who have these dogs around children are just thick as mince, they should have the children removed tbh but the threshold for doing that with the lack of resources means they get left with their stupid parents and survive due to pure luck.

Bristolinfeb · 29/01/2025 20:28

Thisandthatandthensome · 29/01/2025 19:59

Not sure a human wd bite you or savage you to death though.

So do you think ok to refer to as big brother or little sister

I agree! I was just making the point that her agruement that their sibilings so the dog won’t bite doesn’t make sense.

I would like to see all these dogs PTS.

JessiesJ99 · 29/01/2025 20:28

FirepIace · 29/01/2025 19:58

Not sure a sibling has ever mauled another sibling to death though.

😂😂😂😂😂

pestowithwalnuts · 29/01/2025 20:31

I watched this and couldn't believe it
She knew what the dog was going to do before it even did it.
And it wouldn't touch his sister.. God sake what an an absolute loads of dim witted bollocks.
You stupid woman
I bet she's another one who calls the dog her ,' fur baby '

CoubousAndTourmalet · 29/01/2025 20:35

I was an only child but our cat was always referred to as my brother and our dog was my sister. I don't ever remember anyone being offended by it, but it was the 1970's so obviously times have changed. People seem far less tolerant of others now.
