To not replace the bottle of wine?

foreveralmost · 20/01/2025 10:34

I live with two other housemates, one stored a bottle of wine in side door of the fridge. As I opened the fridge it fell out and smashed.

I didn’t open the fridge roughly, I opened it normally, She saw me do it. I obviously cleaned it up and apologised - but I was just the unlucky one who happened to open the fridge.

She has now text me to say could I pick her up a new bottle on the way home ..

Of course you should replace it.

TestingTestingWonTooFree · 20/01/2025 10:36

Was it badly stored? Is the fridge faulty? Do you know she’s expecting you to pay?

pimplebum · 20/01/2025 10:38

Of course you should why in earth wouldn’t you !
yes it’s not a great spot to put the bottle and not your “fault” exactly but is it worth making a chilly atmosphere over bottle if wine ?

Pamelaaaaarrr · 20/01/2025 10:39

Yes, you should replace it.

Yes the fridge was probably the fullest it’s been. The side slots aren’t that high either,

Why? She stored it in a stupid place. All I did was open the fridge - why should that mean I have to pay?

Really its a bit of both, shes a bit cheeky to ask you to pay all of it

thing47 · 20/01/2025 10:43

Perhaps the wine was terrible and she left it there deliberately? I'd get her exactly the same thing again 😀

Why is it a stupid place? That's where we store ours. I always thought that pocket was for bottles.

Dotto · 20/01/2025 10:43

For the sake of harmony and a £6 bottle of wine, given how difficult finding good housing is, just replace it, but tell her you're putting it somewhere safer this time.

Octopies · 20/01/2025 10:44

I would to keep the peace, but let her know it's likely to happen again as the side door is too low to safely store it. If it happens again, it's on her and I wouldn't replace.

No, I'd be telling her that the fridge door wasn't a suitable place and if anything it's made a new rule in the house that no wine is stored in the door. I'm not replacing the wine. Their own fault for putting it there and not testing it a few times to make it safe.

You do it yourself (I have), when closing the door and something tips, you think ah better move that....

CatsorDogsrule · 20/01/2025 10:46

If you could post a photo, it would be easier to judge.

FWIW, I'm assuming it wasn't in a sensible door shelf/ pocket, or was sitting on top of something. It would be really difficult to fall out otherwise, so voted YANBU.

Maddy70 · 20/01/2025 10:47

Of course you pick her one up. That's just manners whether you believe you're at fault or not

Gustavo1 · 20/01/2025 10:47

How was the message asking you to pick it up worded? If she’s not explicit, I’d suggest replying that you’ll pick her up a bottle when you’re at the shops and that you’d like to go halves as you feel partly responsible for the last one breaking.

Sets the tone of not taking all the blame but keeps the peace I think.

ComtesseDeSpair · 20/01/2025 10:53

If I knocked somebody’s food or drink over then yes, I’d replace it if asked or offer to replace it if not - even if said food or drink had been put somewhere a bit precarious and it wasn’t entirely due to clumsiness on my part. It’s just polite behaviour which keeps the peace and ensures you have good relationships with the people in your life, isn’t it? The side door of the fridge is a reasonable place to think you can store wine, it’s not as if she rested it at the top of the stairs.

KimberleyClark · 20/01/2025 10:55

I’m trying to work out how a bottle could have fallen out of the door with the door being opened normally. There is usually a substantial lip on the bottle shelf which comes at least a third of the way up the bottle.

Crazybaby123 · 20/01/2025 10:56

I would replace it tbh. It smashed on your watch, I would just replace it and say from now anyone storing wine in the side door from this point on should not and you won't be replacing it again if they do.

crumblingschools · 20/01/2025 10:59

Where in the door was it stored? Always put open bottles of wine in the fridge door here.

mrsm43s · 20/01/2025 11:00

I think you should replace it.

The fridge door is a perfectly normal and reasonable place to store wine. She stored her wine appropriately.

Somehow or other you managed to knock her wine to the floor and smash it when you opened the fridge, so therefore you should replace it.

GoneTooFarAgain · 20/01/2025 11:06

I don't think you should have to. She's being unreasonable.

BUT falling out with housemates is horrible so for a quiet life and a nicer home environment, I'd spend 6 quid and buy the wine. (was it full? Maybe buy a mini one if it's cheaper and the wine bottle wasn't full?)

SemperIdem · 20/01/2025 11:07

Was it a very expensive bottle of wine? I can’t see any other reason for your reluctance to replace it.

SharpOpalNewt · 20/01/2025 11:08

I'd probably buy it for the sake of harmony, though I think SIBU to ask.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 20/01/2025 11:08

I don't think you should have to either, she was right there, it could've been her opening the fridge. Why the bloody hell did she text you and not talk to you about it at the time?

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 20/01/2025 11:11

Pamelaaaaarrr · 20/01/2025 10:43

Why is it a stupid place? That's where we store ours. I always thought that pocket was for bottles.

I didn't know either. That's where our milk lives.
