To not replace the bottle of wine?

foreveralmost · 20/01/2025 10:34

I live with two other housemates, one stored a bottle of wine in side door of the fridge. As I opened the fridge it fell out and smashed.

I didn’t open the fridge roughly, I opened it normally, She saw me do it. I obviously cleaned it up and apologised - but I was just the unlucky one who happened to open the fridge.

She has now text me to say could I pick her up a new bottle on the way home ..

I think you are both being stingy and a bit weird tbh! Just get her a bottle and have done with it.

Tcsha · 20/01/2025 11:14

Where else do you store the wine?!! Is it really worth falling out with a housemate over £15?

TreadSoftlyOnMyDreams · 20/01/2025 11:14

I wouldn't spend too much . 😉

Onlycoffee · 20/01/2025 11:16

Accident waiting to happen to the next person who opened the fridge.
I don't think you should have to replace it, it was an accident which could have happened to anyone in the house. She needs to accept it was an accident, not down to you.

If a lightbulb went when you turned the light on, is it up to you to pay to replace it?

For the sake of harmony and a £6 bottle of wine, given how difficult finding good housing is, just replace it, but tell her you're putting it somewhere safer this time.

Why have you said it was £6?

PinkFrogss · 20/01/2025 11:20

I don’t think you should have to replace it and can’t understand the logic of others saying of course you should.

However if I were you I’d replace it just to keep the peace, assuming it wasn’t expensive

Trumptonagain · 20/01/2025 11:20

Replace it, even if to show willing.

But....put a post it note on the outside of the fridge door open with caution, possibly a bottle of wine been positioned in a stupid place side of door

mrsm43s · 20/01/2025 11:00

I think you should replace it.

The fridge door is a perfectly normal and reasonable place to store wine. She stored her wine appropriately.

Somehow or other you managed to knock her wine to the floor and smash it when you opened the fridge, so therefore you should replace it.

Agreed completely with this and others saying the fridge door is a totally normal place to store bottles like wine, milk or soft drinks.

I understand you think it was an accident but just because it wasn't intentional doesn't mean it shouldn't be replaced.

foreveralmost · 20/01/2025 10:40

Why? She stored it in a stupid place. All I did was open the fridge - why should that mean I have to pay?

On the face of it, the side door is the right place to store a bottle of wine, particularly if it's opened.

If it's because the fridge is faulty, then you should at least go half on the new bottle.

SemperIdem · 20/01/2025 11:07

Was it a very expensive bottle of wine? I can’t see any other reason for your reluctance to replace it.

Because it was t my fault it fell?

OP posts:
DaisyChain505 · 20/01/2025 11:21

For the sake of £5 just replace it, it wasn’t a bottle of Moet.

it doesn’t matter that it wasn’t your “fault” it’s just a nice thing to do by replacing it.

foreveralmost · 20/01/2025 11:20

Why have you said it was £6?

How much was it then?

Happyher · 20/01/2025 11:22

I’d agree to buy her a replacement bottle on condition that she stores it safely from now on

OkayLetMeKnowHowItGoes · 20/01/2025 11:23

foreveralmost · 20/01/2025 11:21

Because it was t my fault it fell?

It was your action that caused it to fall.

I still don’t’t see how it could have just fallen out given the usual construction of a bottle shelf in a fridge door. Did you catch your sleeve on it or something?

Edited

How have you come to the conclusion it was £5?

OP posts:

Of course replace it. The fact that you didn’t smash it on purpose is irrelevant to having to replace it!

PinkFrogss · 20/01/2025 11:25

Buy a new bottle, place it in the same spot on the fridge shelf, make sure you’re not the next person to open it.

Mrsttcno1 · 20/01/2025 11:25

foreveralmost · 20/01/2025 11:21

You opened the fridge and you doing that meant the wine was smashed, you replace it

Bogginsthe3rd · 20/01/2025 11:25

It's embarrassing you didn't immediately offer to replace it. Sounds like it was stored in the right place and you are a butter fingers. Immediately reply to say you will replace asap.

mrsm43s · 20/01/2025 11:26

foreveralmost · 20/01/2025 11:21

Because it was t my fault it fell?

Well, it was.

Obviously it was accidental and you didn't intend to knock it out, but it was stored appropriately in the shelf designed for bottles to be stored, and it was the act of you opening the fridge door or knocking it that somehow caused it to fall and break. It didn't jump off the shelf by itself.

If you break something of someone else's, even accidentally, it's up to you to replace it.

JoanCollinsDiva · 20/01/2025 11:26

Just buy her a cheap bottle and tell everyone "I won't be replacing any more bottles of wine stored badly if they smash when the door is opened" - definitely make a point of saying that.

Catch my sleeve? As soon as I opened the door it crashed to the floor. I didn’t touch it.

Ah so it clearly was your fault. It was an accident but also your fault. Don't be the dick here.

nam3c4ang3 · 20/01/2025 11:27

Christ - just replace it - you are the one who broke it!
