What is the worst holiday you have had?

I will start. In 2023 i went to the haven caravan park in Berwick. I stupidly forgot to pack a shower mat and i slipped while getting out of the shower. Anyway i had to phone an ambulance as i could not put any weight on my right leg. At the hospital the doctor asked me to stand up. I could put a bit of weight on my leg but i fell again when i tried to walk. My knee just gave way. I still shudder when i think about this holiday.

The quietest ski resort, I injured myself badly day one and there was absolutely nothing to do all day while I waited for my family to come back from the slopes. There was only one shop and I think I hobbled there three times a day.

Ti7ch · 18/01/2025 16:39

The two where I spent the whole time there sick

(Migraine; not dodgy food)

I was bored when i injured myself too.

Mallorca, few years ago now when it was the thing to have an AI cheap break. The watery eggs made me so ill 🤢 made my 1 year old ill. I still shudder when I think about them. And to top it off after heaving all night, Thomas cook then went bust, so we weren't sure if we were even getting home (luckily we did on a repatriation flight - after waiting for 2 hours for a family who were late , traipsing around the shops! They didn't want to leave them as they had children and there wasn't going to be any more repatriation flights). DH can't even talk about Spain anymore because of it 😆

That sounds awful.

Rhodes 2023. Arrived Friday night, evacuated from our villa Sat night because of the wild fires. Spent the night in a school with many other people. Luckily managed to book a hotel for the next night and change our flights to the Monday. A long, super stressful weekend in Rhodes, which we don't refer to as a holiday!

It wasn't an awful holiday, but one of our less successful ones was south of France two years ago.

The first 5 days of about 9 were averaging 40C and humid, and our oldest can't stand heat so they were miserable. The villa didn't have a pool (but sea was near) or A/C though it did have some fans, but oldest also can't sleep through fan noise. They were also miserable and stressed because they had a maths mock retake as they had done unexpectedly badly at the end of Y10. I'm not great in heat either and had to sleep a lot on the sofa due to DH snoring. After that one I decided that if we are holidaying in southern Europe in July/August from now on, we must get a place with A/C and a swimming pool, even if means a less nice location or villa. Sadly I think climate change means Southern Europe is going to be an oven every single summer now.

One day they stayed in the villa to revise and we drove youngest to Monaco for the day. We got totally lost in the tunnels going into Monaco because satnav kept cutting out and we missed our turning, DS (12) threw up on his shorts and I spent the best part of a hour trying to find anywhere there wasn't a high end designer shop to buy him some shorts while he and DH sat in a carpark - Google said there was one branch of Zara, and I went there to find it didn't have a kids' section, but then I realised as Monaco was probably full of women who were too rich and fashionable to eat they would probably have tiny sizes and located the tiniest possible plain denim shorts that would fit him and not look ridiculous.

My mum tells me about an awful holiday the family had when the three of us were under 7 and we all got mumps 😩

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 18/01/2025 16:52

Bournemouth 1977. I was 11 at a caravan park in a heat wave with my parents and extended family. We had no running water for half the day, a plot near the toilet block and rampant D and V throughout the park to which we all succumbed in turn. I am 58 now and still shudder when I remember it.

Pigeonqueen · 18/01/2025 16:55

Lefkada with my now ex dh in 2000 ish.

We hadn’t been dating long and we pooled our spending money, splitting it half and half between us for safe keeping, which I thought we’d use for meals out, activities etc. The second day we were there he went out very early and got himself a very fancy watch with his half of the spending money (!) leaving us with just my half for everything else. I should have dumped him after that to be honest, so selfish.

I tried to make the best of the rest of the holiday but he was just so moody and deleted any photos of us together that I took as he didn’t like the way he looked in any of the photos (he was incredibly vain, not secretly married or anything, just vain) and then the icing on the cake was he didn’t like any of the food so he sat there every night with a beer while I ate and then he made plain pasta and cheese back at the apartment.

Never been so home sick.

Back in the days of booking holidays on ceefax...

Booked a bargain Spanish holiday, all inclusive (had never done all inc before) and it was like a massive housing estate by the sea. Gangs of marauding kids running riot while their parents got pissed in the bar, and toddler DS got food poisoning so was ill for most of the week. Grim 💩

heyhopotato · 18/01/2025 17:04

Nowhere near as bad as some of these others, but in-laws wanted to go on a walking holiday in Austria...where they wanted to go was just grass with mountains in the distance and we'd walk miles across these fields with nothing to see only to eat some badly cooked veal (I don't like any kind of meat) and walk back again. The hotel had bed bugs and mosquitos so was constantly bitten and itching, and on top of that they used scented toilet paper which gave me an incredibly uncomfortable rash...and of course walking 10 miles a day wanting to just scratch every part of my body in the heat was just horrible and made me so grumpy. In the middle of nowhere so nowhere to get any kind of pain relief, and all while (badly) pretending I was having a great time.

Calabria 2015.
Literally the biggest waste of time, energy and money.

Crikeyalmighty · 18/01/2025 17:09

Egypt 2010 at makadi bay iberostar

By day 2 - all 3 of us including son (11) really ill despite being careful with salad, water, ice etc and I'm trying to go to restaurant to get them to give us biscuits and dry cake as none could keep food down - site had run out of the anti sickness/diorrhea 'tablets' - son lost 11lbs in a week!!

Lovely big Room but only had 1 bathroom- not great
improved slightly by day 8 - just in time to get on plane home-

Had to do samples immediately on return with GP - amoebic dysentry. And first choice refused any refunds even though around 30% of customers appeared to be consigned to their room

Meadowfinch · 18/01/2025 17:09

I stupidly agreed to go to Dominican Republic with a fairly new boyfriend, for a week over new year.

It was ghastly. The food was truly dreadful, the same buffet every day, and it was one of those horrid all-inclusives where everyone tries to drink their holiday costs in cheap booze so most people were drunk. Absolutely not my thing.

I retreated to the quietest part of the grounds with a sunlounger and a book. Boyfriend wanted to party and spent the whole holiday in a mood.

Then everyone on the plane home wanted to continue drinking, wouldn't sit down and be quiet, and so I got no sleep. We got to Gatwick at 4am and boyfriend announced he would ring his elderly mum to come and get him - knowing I wouldn't let him do anything so selfish.

So I drove him home to Brighton, where he tried to insist I go in and meet his mum for the first time. I refused because I'd had no sleep. I'd been up all night and in my clothes for close to 20 hours and I had a long drive home ahead of me. I certainly wasn't in the mood for introductions.

He lost his temper so I ended up dumping his bag on the pavement and driving off. I dumped him too after I'd had a shower, some sleep and a decent meal. Never again. 😳

@heyhopotato that actually sounds awful, I couldn't even read to the end ! You poor thing.

I was not very impressed before my accident. The on site fish shop was awful. The service in the restaurant was really slow too. Luckily i managed to do a food shop before my accident. I am never going back.

About 20 years ago, my partner and i went to Spain with his best friend and his new girlfriend who we'd only met a couple of times. The friend was very outgoing and great company but his new girlfriend was practically mute and liked to go to bed at 9pm. It was the longest, dullest holiday Ive ever been on. She insisted that we eat at 6pm every night and be back at the apartment by 8pm. She didnt drink and looked down on those who did. Every attempt at conversation failed. She took a book to the restaurant with her. Amazingly, they are STILL together. I've no idea what he sees in her.

chelseahealyslips · 18/01/2025 17:15

Majorca AI package deal with 6 kids about 7 years ago.
2 days in, I opened the curtains in the room and someone had vomited down the full length of the building spraying all the windows, everyone's pool toys and drying swimsuits on every balcony.
I complained and it wasn't cleaned up well.
The next day we started dropping like flies with the sickness and diarrhea. My poor daughter shit the bed she was so poorly and we just had bins and bin bags full of sick littering the room.
We couldn't eat there anymore so we had to take turns, still unwell, to walk a mile down the road to an aldi everyday for food. We then spent every day off site and only returned to sleep. It cost us a fortune in meals in bars and restaurants.
Turned out nearly the whole hotel was ill, it was the spreading in the pool water, we spoke to other people and it was the same story everywhere. Complained to tui and they refused to accept any responsibility whatsoever.
The hotel still operates and the trip advisor reviews still complain of the same things regarding illness (I'm nosey and look at it from time to time)

Calochortus · 18/01/2025 17:19

Dominican. It was supposed to be a 5 star and had amazing trip advisor reviews. Half cooked chicken legs (raw in the middle), a fish at the outdoor grill was cut open and flies flew out and all of the restaurants were revolting with tepid food. There was a very evident sex trade going on too, it was disgusting watching young Dominican men in the pools and restaurants with older women which we later found out were called sanky pankies. They must have been booked for a certain amount of time as you’d see them with one woman then a few hours later with another. We lasted 4 days and flew home.

TwistedWonder · 18/01/2025 17:19

Turkey 1997 - we booked through Teletext and didn’t really know much about where we were going but we were assured by the travel agent it was an hours transfer from the airport - it was actually a 3 hour coach journey and we stopped for about 45 minutes at a service station type place so almost 4 hours in total.

When we arrived it was quite late and the apartment smelled dreadfully of drains making us both gag.

On the second night both of us had food poisoning and ended up throwing up all night.

Then on day 5 when we finally felt a bit better, we woke up to the new Princess Diana had died and everything closed for a couple of days.

We had never been so relieved to be on the plane home u til they announced we were unable to land at Stansted due to weather conditions and were being diverted to Liverpool - I live literally 10 minutes from Stansted!!
We landed at Liverpool in heavy rain and the landing was really heavy and then skidded and veered to the right. The plane was really shaking as the pilots pulled it back straight.

We sat on the tarmac for over an hour before taking off again and finally flying back to Stansted.

Thailand. Ex H was being a total see you next Tuesday the whole time, I felt really ill from day one but thought it was stress related, no real, tangible physical symptoms, just total wiped out exhaustion. On the last day I couldn’t check in on line - horrendous sinking feeling, got to the airport & told we’d been bumped from our direct flight to a flight with a connection and layover in MOSCOW! Adding hours to our journey home. I cried at the desk, cited my child’s additional needs, lovely desk agent got us onto another direct flight. I cried with relief on touchdown at Heathrow, went to the doctors next day and was diagnosed with walking pneumonia. I’m sure Thailand is lovely but I can’t go back, I’m literally scared of it!

OnlyMothersInTheBuilding · 18/01/2025 17:21

Haven-type holiday where my 2 year old dd had the most awful virus and was sick for the entire week. Nearly went home twice but thought she was rallying, then she didn't. Spent the whole week on the caravan's sofa watching Wimbledon.

On the afternoon of the last day she was well enough to eat an ice cream and she was back to her usual self by the time we'd driven home, sods law.

PermanentTemporary · 18/01/2025 17:21

Bloody hell. Mine are so minor in comparison.

A British Trust for Conservation Volunteers week in Stoke on Trent. I've had some great weeks with them and back then they cost £30 for a week, but this one was at the end of the season and I think the leaders were really fed up. There were an older couple who complained about the accommodation- we were in a village hall with sleeping bags, which was standard, but that week there were a few activities we had to move for. So they found us alternatives - sleeping in a sports changing room on the Marmite factory site. Absolutely bizarre choice and certainly not an upgrade. I can still smell the brewers yeast in the air if I think about it. By the end of the week nobody was talking to anyone else.

Lovelynames123 · 18/01/2025 17:22

Not bad compared to some but an AI to Alanya, Turkey. Toddler on plane standing up shouting for his mum almost constantly, he was sat with his grandma, mum ignored him and gm didn't once tell him to pipe down, and unfortunately they were on our transfer so it continued for 2 hrs, then we had him again on the return journey. Never travel without headphones and earplugs now.

Get into room early hours of the morning, xh cut his foot on broken glass. Next day, and every day following, food dire, toilets filthy, actually jobbies lying on the floor for hours, pool closed regularly for code brown. But, weather was fab,and we'd only paid £1200 for 4 AI, so we made the most of it, and ate out!

Another time, went to Benalmadena First Choice Holiday Village in the May - rained for 8 of the 11 days! Hotel not set up for poor weather so cost a fortune finding things to do. Food dire, lots of people ill. Very rough families getting absolutely mortal, forgetting to collect kids from kids club, loud swearing etc. Was so awful that I booked 10 days in Majorca for 6 weeks later whilst we were still there!
