Sorry this is not aibu as such but I’m desperate - I have a super important interview at 9am tomorrow which can’t be moved - but I have a 39.5 degree temperature and feel rotten!! Aside from paracetamol, what can I do to bounce back fast (enough to last for two hours)? Don’t worry, it’s via zoom so I won’t get anyone else sick but I need to be able to think VERY clearly.

If anyone has any tips I’ll very gratefully take them. Thanks!

Ibuprofen and water and bed asap

Take more paracetamol and ibuprofen in the morning about an hour before your meeting to make sure they kick in

Good luck!

Gettingbysomehow · 17/01/2025 22:17

Well it's too late now but I'd have rung them and postponed the interview. They will not thank you for giving them flu. Wear a mask and explain why.

Caerulea · 17/01/2025 22:18

Cocaine, I think?

Literally says in the OP that the interview is via Zoom.

LostittoBostik · 17/01/2025 22:18

You need to cancel - you will not give a good impression

Just tell the truth

Or read the post properly?

@Kitkat189 you should be tucked up in bed already! Lots of fluids. Maybe a coffee but not too strong as you don't want to end up on the loo and miss it completely!

Over Zoom?

Thats a new one on me!

Did you even read the OP 🙄

Orchidsunlight · 17/01/2025 22:20

over zoom? should be ok then but explain you are ill

PickettyPick · 17/01/2025 22:20

If you really have flu then you wouldn’t be able to get out of bed, let alone take part in an interview.

JoyeuxNarwhal · 17/01/2025 22:20

Caerulea · 17/01/2025 22:18

Ah yeah, they won't question the sniffing if she says she has flu either 👍

Pointpoint · 17/01/2025 22:20

Pseudoephedrine - it’s a pharmacy decongestant but also helps perk you up (you dont need a prescription and don’t be fobbed off with phenylephrine it does nothing).

Caffeine with paracetamol and ibuprofen - has shown efficacy to speed absorption. Take them both 1 hour before the interview. You can take 800mg of ibuprofen and 1000mg paracetamol. The ibuprofen is pharmacy dose strength and you can’t go over 3200mg ibuprofen daily)

Vicks in a bowl with hot water and towel - steam your face for 10mins to help release congestion and help open airwaves

Its on zoom. She's not meeting them in person

There's always one isn't there? 🙄

She has a high temperature and the interview is on zoom and can’t be cancelled.

Who’s to say she doesn’t have the flu? Sounds like it with that fever to me.

Good luck, OP! I don’t have any extra advice but I hope you manage to pull it off for a couple of hours! I second the suggestion of all the drugs about an hour before so that they can kick in. Can you do the interview in bed subtly?

Poppyseeds79 · 17/01/2025 22:23

So long as you're not coughing/hacking, and can speak properly? I'd drop into the conversation you'd got the current cold bug going around (everyone's had it), if the opportunity comes to bring it up. You'll probably get some empathy for that, but limited sympathy if you're coughing the whole way through it.

PickettyPick · 17/01/2025 22:23

EffortlesslyInelegant · 17/01/2025 22:22

One who has a cold but calls it flu?

EffortlesslyInelegant · 17/01/2025 22:25

Oh put a sock in it Picketty. You're not in the room with her and you're not her GP.
It is possible to function with flu if you HAVE to. Maybe not too hard or too long but it is possible.

Coffeeisnecessary · 17/01/2025 22:26

Probably too late if you don't have it in house but I find night nurse very useful for sleep when I'm ill which always helps me feel a bit better in the morning.

Poppyseeds79 · 17/01/2025 22:27

Have you got some Vicks, OP? I'd slather it on, and pre interview too. Plus side is no one else will smell it 😁

Well it's all I can suggest if it's proper flu, lol, nothing else will help 🤪

OP - you might find the anxiety & adrenaline are enough to get you through & then you'll just crash afterwards with no real idea of what just happened. It will be a good ice-breaker to make a joke of it being a good thing it's online.

Fingers crossed for you, whatever this batch of flu is is absolutely brutal

NameChange101xox · 17/01/2025 22:28

A nurse I worked with felt rotten on shift but finished her shift then did a POC test and she had flu. So yes you can get out of bed with flu.

op, you need plenty of water, hot drinks, cold drinks. Whatever you can take. Something sugary - banana? Half hour before the interview. Every pill you can take. Nurofen, paracetamol, decongestant. Good luck!

ByAquaKoala · 17/01/2025 22:28

I always feel better after hot bath with menthol essential oil mix in it. Also increase intake of vitamin c and zinc. Ibuprofen works better for me so that and depending if you have sore throat or runny nose - either nasal spray or cough syrup. I wouldn't say this will do miracles but should hopefully help a little.

Fingers crossed so the interview goes well. Also.. maybe at the beginning mention that you got virus and not feeling 100% but you're so excited about the opportunity, you couldn't let it go, could help to set the tone. Anyway, whatever the outcome, you know you will give it all and I bet you will do great! x
