Need to recover from flu for TOMORROW help please!

Sorry this is not aibu as such but I’m desperate - I have a super important interview at 9am tomorrow which can’t be moved - but I have a 39.5 degree temperature and feel rotten!! Aside from paracetamol, what can I do to bounce back fast (enough to last for two hours)? Don’t worry, it’s via zoom so I won’t get anyone else sick but I need to be able to think VERY clearly.

If anyone has any tips I’ll very gratefully take them. Thanks!

People really need to pack it in with this stupid misinformation that they heard off their nan once and decided was scientific fact. This sanctimonious bullshit comment pops up on every flu thread without fail and is just demonstrably wrong and spectacularly unhelpful.

The flu doesn't always knock you on your arse, it isn't always horrendous, it doesn't effect everyone the same and while some people are hospitalised by it others are in fact able to function because it doesn't hit them as hard.

Absolutely this. This has been debunked on MN every year since 2010 when I joined, 'Oh the test for flu is whether you could get out of bed to pick up a £10 note!' - complete nonsense.

I'm 67, have had 9 million colds or other viruses, and flu THREE times, so I do know the difference, and I had small kids two of the times and HAD to get up and do a few things. It wasn't nice, but it was possible.

Flu affects people in various degrees. Some encounters with it keeps you in bed, sometimes you die, sometimes you are able to function for some of the day even if it's unpleasant.

But I just know the likes of PickettyPick will be around every single year to claim 'it's not flu if you aren't totally floored by it' so I'm wasting my breath.

Good luck with your call, OP. Hope you have one of the milder experiences, and feel better soon

If you really have flu then you wouldn’t be able to get out of bed, let alone take part in an interview.

That's a myth, many people, including me and my 82 year old mum carried on with getting up etc with confirmed influenza A - everyones immune response is different.

Well, thanks for your contribution, I’m sure this has made the OP feel much better.

It was always said that with real flu you wouldn't be bothered to pick up a £50 if you saw it on the floor.
Obviously you can feel very unwell with feverish colds and other similar viruses.

Some people have walked a mile on a broken leg. You can normally force your body to do things if you really have to. You don’t tend to have 39.5 degree fever with a cold.

MyNameIsSharon · 18/01/2025 09:45

Good luck today Kitkat189 I hope you feel a bit better and your interview goes well FlowersFlowers

Kebabbky · 18/01/2025 09:48

Hey Kitkat - how rotten for you but I hope you woke up feeling just a little better and managed the interview? I’m sure they’ll be able to tell that you’re unwell and they’ll just think you’ve done so well still attending.

LostittoBostik · 18/01/2025 09:51

How did it go?!

Kitkat189 · 18/01/2025 18:00

Pointpoint · 17/01/2025 22:20

Pseudoephedrine - it’s a pharmacy decongestant but also helps perk you up (you dont need a prescription and don’t be fobbed off with phenylephrine it does nothing).

Caffeine with paracetamol and ibuprofen - has shown efficacy to speed absorption. Take them both 1 hour before the interview. You can take 800mg of ibuprofen and 1000mg paracetamol. The ibuprofen is pharmacy dose strength and you can’t go over 3200mg ibuprofen daily)

Vicks in a bowl with hot water and towel - steam your face for 10mins to help release congestion and help open airwaves

Thank you, saving all these tips - managed to get this from the 24/7 pharmacy and I think it helped massively. I was able to pull through and felt pretty ok - back in bed now!

I’m not sure if it’s actually the flu (hopefully not) but had 39 degrees.

Look up a recipe for a flu bomb to drink with the other suggestions.

The one I swear with is
Full lemon quartered, skin too
Full orange quartered, skin too
Tea spoon of cinnamon, turmeric, ginger, quarter teaspoon of cayenne pepper, shake of salt and pepper.
Put this into a nutri bullet, cup of warm water, 4 desert spoons of honey.
Blitz as long as it takes to smooth it out.

Add a couple of dessert spoons to a cup, add hot water, drink every two hours with whatever meds you like. Magic.

Kitkat189 · 18/01/2025 18:06

Thanks everyone for the tips and well wishes, I think it went ok, I actually felt fine for the duration of the meeting. Thank heavens for zoom in times like these. Hopefully others who find this thread after searching for ways to (temporarily) bounce back fast will find it helpful too.

I honestly have no idea if this is the flu or just some random virus, either way I hope I don’t pass it on to the rest of the family.

Love this. Sounds like it would speed up recovery

I once did an important dance exam with an utterly dreadful cold - I took day nurse(?) beforehand, which had pseudoephedrine in back then (not sure if it still does), and I got the highest mark I ever had 😂

A nurse I worked with felt rotten on shift but finished her shift then did a POC test and she had flu. So yes you can get out of bed with flu.

op, you need plenty of water, hot drinks, cold drinks. Whatever you can take. Something sugary - banana? Half hour before the interview. Every pill you can take. Nurofen, paracetamol, decongestant. Good luck!

I worked in ICU and over the course of a shift found it harder and harder to change my patient's sheets. I got home, went to bed, and pretty much slept for 2 weeks. It was flu and it came on that suddenly.

User3456 · 18/01/2025 18:44

Glad it went ok. Hope you get an offer!

There's some evidence that anti viral nasal sprays such as Boots Dual Defence can reduce length of symptoms - and can also be used preventatively too.

Also, black or green tea and a mouthwash containing CPC used twice a day may reduce your viral load and help you clear respiratory infections faster.

Next year it's definitely worth considering getting a flu jab in October, and consider avoiding crowded indoor settings and/or wearing a mask where appropriate for 2 weeks before any important appointments too.

You made me think of Walter White for some reason…

But yes I agree. Lots of flu remedies have paracetamol/caffeine/pseudoephedrine and can help you feel human for a few hours. Looking forward to my hit tomorrow morning.

This made me chuckle, pseudo is a starting material for meth which is why it’s pharmacy controlled. In the US you have to sign your name when buying it so they can keep an eye on if someone is buying a lot….myabe I am Walter White 😂

This exactly, you haven’t got flu.
A virus or a cold I suspect.
Edited to say sorry, late to the party. Glad it went well!

Machachacha · 18/01/2025 19:00

This has stopped in its tracks, the head feeling full of wool, eyes watering, constant sneezing and nose streaming within a couple of hours and two cups of it.
I might add a couple of disprin to it to disolve in it if a sore throat was part of the symptoms.
Magic stuff.
I think it tastes fine.
My children think it tastes shite🙄, but agree it works 😁.
Hope you feel better soon.

As others have said this simply isn't true. I had 'Flu A confirmed just before Christmas. I had managed to go to work for one short day before having it confirmed.

Literally says in the OP that the interview is via Zoom.

Thanks for the 5000 amusing posts mocking me. I get that I missed that bit but I'm blind in one eye so if I'm reading small print on my phone I often miss a couple of words.
But don't let that put a stop to your fun.
