Sorry this is not aibu as such but I’m desperate - I have a super important interview at 9am tomorrow which can’t be moved - but I have a 39.5 degree temperature and feel rotten!! Aside from paracetamol, what can I do to bounce back fast (enough to last for two hours)? Don’t worry, it’s via zoom so I won’t get anyone else sick but I need to be able to think VERY clearly.

If anyone has any tips I’ll very gratefully take them. Thanks!

At least it's zoom; explain at the outset you're under the weather, and good luck!

It really just takes time and hot liquids, painkillers etc

shivermetimbers77 · 17/01/2025 22:30

Get one of those all in one cold and flu preparations if you can first thing: paracetamol, pseudoephedrine and caffeine. Eg Sudafed or Benylin cold and flu tablets or day nurse.: those have got me through a lot of busy days when I've been feeling bad but can't take rest. Good luck!

Sureitwont · 17/01/2025 22:32

Personally, I would dose up on paracetamol and decongestant an hour before the interview, but explain at the start of the interview that I am unfortunately suffering with flu but am happy to continue as best I can or we can re-arrange if they would prefer to do the interview on a day when I’m not sniffling, sweating and bunged up.

They will likely appreciate that you made the effort either way, and if they want to carry on (re-arranging might not be practically possible), at least they will hopefully take into account that you were unwell.

There's always one isn't there? 🙄

I’ve just gotten over flu. I wouldn’t have been able to get out of bed for an interview. A bad cold I would.

Unless the op has had the vaccine? Then I’d also think a few pain killers would help.

Exactly!

Mumoftwoboysaged4and5 · 17/01/2025 22:35

Borrocca dissolved in orange juice followed by a coffee. Works for me but the effects only last for a couple of hours.

crumblingschools · 17/01/2025 22:40

Isn’t flu similar to COVID, you can have varying levels of symptoms, so someone suffering might not be able to get out of bed, others can

Redmat · 17/01/2025 22:40

It was always said that with real flu you wouldn't be bothered to pick up a £50 if you saw it on the floor.
Obviously you can feel very unwell with feverish colds and other similar viruses.

user1492538376 · 17/01/2025 22:42

Well a temp of 39.5 is very high - I’m surprised you are up to it - thats pretty high level - most people with a fever like that wouldnt get out of bed. I would cancel as if you are really ill you wont be at your best anyway.

DrHGS · 17/01/2025 22:48

PickettyPick · 17/01/2025 22:20

If you really have flu then you wouldn’t be able to get out of bed, let alone take part in an interview.

Incorrect, I had diagnosed flu before Christmas and was out of bed every day.

DrHGS · 17/01/2025 22:51

OP if you do have to go ahead with the interview I would suggest some nasal decongestant and alternating paracetamol and ibuprofen to take the edge off the symptoms. Also honesty with the interview panel - there’s a lot of it around at the moment. Good luck!

PickAChew · 17/01/2025 22:55

PickettyPick · 17/01/2025 22:20

Rubbish. You can really have flu and sort of function. DH proved this before Christmas. Muddled along feeling crap and coughing up a lung and only realised it was flunwhem I pushed a LFT in his direction which showed positive for influenza A.

Trousername · 17/01/2025 22:55

Do you have Berocca soluble tablets in the house? Take one tonight and one half a hour before the interview (in a winegass sized glass of water) - it will give you a short boost. But I would tell them before you start that you have a virus and are not at your best.

Gettingbysomehow · 17/01/2025 22:17

Well it's too late now but I'd have rung them and postponed the interview. They will not thank you for giving them flu. Wear a mask and explain why.

Wear a mask for a zoom call?

I had this flu and it was horrible. I wouldn't have a shower before hand as that really took it out of me, obviously make sure you look presentable but don't do anything strenuous beforehand.
Good luck

DUsername · 17/01/2025 22:58

Never mind all this science stuff and actual tests for flu - Dr pickettypick says it isn't flu so it isn't!!

Op, I think dosing up with as much as you can safely take and then doing what a previous poster said is a good idea - advising them that you feel unwell but are excited for the opportunity. You never know, they may offer you a second interview if they can see potential but it's obvious you're unwell.

Good luck.

Not everyone is affected in the same way by all illnesses. Same as some people get Covid or chickenpox worse than others.

TokyoSushi · 17/01/2025 23:00

I'm not sure the OP asked for an arable whether she had flu or not...

Hopefully you're in bed now OP, get up, paracetamol and plenty of fluids straight away, shower and wash your hair, make up and hopefully you can power through. Maybe wear something comfy on your bottom half?

Straight to bed when you're done, good luck!!

BrianWankum · 17/01/2025 23:00

If I'm feeling really rough, I always go for aspirin rather than ibuprofen as it will usually have much more effect for a couple of hours. And yes to the paracetamol for the fever.

Good luck!

coldscottishmum · 17/01/2025 23:01

Paracetamol, ibrufen, water, lots of rest and sleep. If you can some strepsils for any hoarse voice for the actual presentation. I hope you recover soon - both DC have just recovered from the same thing, it was awful. Good luck for your presentation and go to bed straight after!

AliceMcK · 17/01/2025 23:02

Cold and flu meds. I’d probably have a glass of water with some alcazeltzer and pop a couple of caffeine pills 30 mins before hand. Maybe some fresh orange or apple juice in the morning.

peachystormy · 17/01/2025 23:02

I always try a bottle of fresh orange juice when am catching a cold, (not made from concentrate obviously) and a clove of garlic washing down by milk

Mrsmch123 · 17/01/2025 23:04

IVe just had the flu. I couldn't get out of bed for the first 5 days. Slept for 23 hours for two days in a row. It's been 12 days now and I'm still not 100%. My temp was 40.3 at one point but I swear it felt like it was -20 in my house. Fluids paracetamol and a bit of adrenaline will hopefully get you through!

Flux1 · 17/01/2025 23:06

Lots of good advice here. Personally I wouldn't take Sudafed as even the non-drowsy one makes me feel dozy.

Wishing you the very best with your interview. Let them know you're not well but you wanted to attend and do your best. Hopefully they'll take it into account.

tightarses · 17/01/2025 23:07

A ginger and turmeric shot is absolutely brilliant for a burst of energy. Do you have a partner who can wizz to a Lidl first thing tomorrow?

KabukiNoh · 17/01/2025 23:07

Pointpoint · 17/01/2025 22:20

Pseudoephedrine - it’s a pharmacy decongestant but also helps perk you up (you dont need a prescription and don’t be fobbed off with phenylephrine it does nothing).

Caffeine with paracetamol and ibuprofen - has shown efficacy to speed absorption. Take them both 1 hour before the interview. You can take 800mg of ibuprofen and 1000mg paracetamol. The ibuprofen is pharmacy dose strength and you can’t go over 3200mg ibuprofen daily)

Vicks in a bowl with hot water and towel - steam your face for 10mins to help release congestion and help open airwaves

You made me think of Walter White for some reason…

But yes I agree. Lots of flu remedies have paracetamol/caffeine/pseudoephedrine and can help you feel human for a few hours. Looking forward to my hit tomorrow morning.
