To think I’m allowed to not like Aubergine

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 08/01/2025 18:44

Writing this is making me realise this is bananas but it wound me up šŸ˜‚

Went for dinner with a friend who has a tendency to be hard work to somewhere she’s been twice before but is new to me.

I ordered a dish that came with a side of either roast Aubergine or roast pepper, as an avid hater of aubergine (one of THREE foods I don’t like so am v not fussy!), asked for pepper, they said they were out, I said not to worry, I’ll order a different side dish, they pushed the aubergine (because I would have to pay for a different side) and I said no thanks, not a fan, I’ll have X dish all good. The MOST uninteresting conversation and the most something and nothing situation šŸ˜‚

They brought the food out, apologised for no peppers and said my side was on the house. ā€œOh that’s okay please don’t worryā€ ā€œno no we insistā€ ā€œthat’s v kind of youā€ followed, ate (delicious!), lovely chat with the waiter and off we went

I cannot tell you what a non event this was šŸ˜‚

Friend was a bit funny over dinner not THAT unusual and turns out is VERY annoyed that I ā€œshowed her upā€ by telling them I didn’t like their food and asking for them to swap the dish. Apparently ā€œshe’s a regular there and is now way too embarrassed to go back after thisā€ and her husband is really upset they can’t go for his birthday next month because of this. I’ve upset them both.

Aside from ā€œshut up you utter knobshiteā€ I’m not really sure how to respond šŸ˜‚

Bat shit crazy. I wouldn’t be going for dinner with her again.

Ilovethatbear · 08/01/2025 18:46

She’s batshit.

I will eat every single vegetable. Except aubergine. Because it’s yucky.

Nothing off about your behaviour. Does she have form for being this odd?

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 08/01/2025 18:46

Hard work indeed! You are of course very unreasonable for not liking aubergine, a fine vegetable Grin, but otherwise you were the epitome of restraint and reasonableness. She and her husband are cutting off their noses to spite their faces.

MrsSethGecko · 08/01/2025 18:46

I would just go with "Shut up you utter gobshite" to be honest.

SometimesCalmPerson · 08/01/2025 18:46

You already have the right response, just go with that.

50Balesofgrey · 08/01/2025 18:46

YABU to dislike aubergine, nasty slimey stuff. She sounds like a waste of an evening

KARLLargerfield · 08/01/2025 18:47

There must be more to it!! It sounds like the waiter was awkward and long winded about the swap? Maybe the chef is like moody marco pierre white and your friends don't want to get on his wrong side by being found out to associate with fussy eaters like you šŸ˜‹

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 08/01/2025 18:48

I will just add that aubergine is one vegetable that has to be cooked till very soft. There is no point in having it roasted or fried in a decent oil, much of which will be absorbed. Boiled chewy aubergine is not enjoyable at all.

šŸ˜„šŸ˜„šŸ˜„ what's her problem?

This meme springs to mind

BigDahliaFan · 08/01/2025 18:49

Go round to her house dressed as an aubergine. That’ll show her embarrassing.

No more to it! Waiter was lovely and helpful, no problems there at all!

I promise you, I have tried it so many ways. It ain’t for me šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

The bigger issue here is surely that it is gobshite, not knobshite? 🤣

YANBU though. I like aubergine but it's not for everyone and you were polite about it

FoxtonFoxton · 08/01/2025 18:51

Has she text you that?! If so I'd reply with a thumbs up emoji and leave them to it. Forever.

Nextyearhopes · 08/01/2025 18:52

If she invites you out again refuse and tell her why.
I hate aubergine too

Isseywith2witchycats · 08/01/2025 18:52

Funnily enough I would have gone for the aubergine as I cant stand peppers in any way shape or form we all have one food that we would not eat and by the time your friend goes in there again it will be yesterdays chip paper as they say

She loves to be offended by anything…often it’s a roll your eyes and move on reaction from me but she’s had her moments

She was V offended by something 8/9y ago…I may have had an MN thread at the time…that meant I took a break from her for a while…I had 2 tubs of stain remover powder (vanish kind of stuff) decanted into plain tubs that I had written ā€œfor whitesā€ ā€œfor colouredā€ on top and she was v upset at my apparent racism

I'd do a glowing Tripadvisor review and mention how accomodating they were. Then send her a text with a link to it. With a final flourish of a šŸ†at the end of it.

I love this idea but would take it further and follow her and her husband around whilst dressed as an aubergine. If they bump into any of their high society friends, I'd run over and introduce myself.

None of this can be real.

I can't stand tomatoes as a vegetable. Ok in pasta sauce but raw or cookedv - YUK. So I would have done the same.
I laughed about the stain remover!

mrsm43s · 08/01/2025 18:57

Well aubergine is delicious, and, cooked right is gorgeous and melt in your mouth heaven, so on that count you're clearly wrong. (Next you'll be telling me you don't like mushrooms!)

But it's perfectly reasonable to politely ask for a substitution, so about that you are definitely right, and your friend is just being weird.
