To think I’m allowed to not like Aubergine

Writing this is making me realise this is bananas but it wound me up šŸ˜‚

Went for dinner with a friend who has a tendency to be hard work to somewhere she’s been twice before but is new to me.

I ordered a dish that came with a side of either roast Aubergine or roast pepper, as an avid hater of aubergine (one of THREE foods I don’t like so am v not fussy!), asked for pepper, they said they were out, I said not to worry, I’ll order a different side dish, they pushed the aubergine (because I would have to pay for a different side) and I said no thanks, not a fan, I’ll have X dish all good. The MOST uninteresting conversation and the most something and nothing situation šŸ˜‚

They brought the food out, apologised for no peppers and said my side was on the house. ā€œOh that’s okay please don’t worryā€ ā€œno no we insistā€ ā€œthat’s v kind of youā€ followed, ate (delicious!), lovely chat with the waiter and off we went

I cannot tell you what a non event this was šŸ˜‚

Friend was a bit funny over dinner not THAT unusual and turns out is VERY annoyed that I ā€œshowed her upā€ by telling them I didn’t like their food and asking for them to swap the dish. Apparently ā€œshe’s a regular there and is now way too embarrassed to go back after thisā€ and her husband is really upset they can’t go for his birthday next month because of this. I’ve upset them both.

Aside from ā€œshut up you utter knobshiteā€ I’m not really sure how to respond šŸ˜‚

Well aubergine is delicious, and, cooked right is gorgeous and melt in your mouth heaven, so on that count you're clearly wrong. (Next you'll be telling me you don't like mushrooms!)

But it's perfectly reasonable to politely ask for a substitution, so about that you are definitely right, and your friend is just being weird.

Fucking love a mushroom!

Loads of people dislike aubergine. The restaurant shouldn't have tried to push it on you and your mate shouldn't care less what side dishes you order. If she loves aubergine so much she could eat it herself.
Who goes out for a meal, only to eat things they hate in order to avoid 'embarrassing' someone?
Your mate sounds awful.

I can't stand tomatoes as a vegetable. Ok in pasta sauce but raw or cookedv - YUK. So I would have done the same.
I laughed about the stain remover!

I appreciate the support which is the only reason I’m not AGHAST that you don’t like tomatoes šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

Stain remover thing was bonkersly amusing šŸ˜‚

I’ll eat aubergine if a friend has made something with it in. But I bloody hate it and have yet to be convinced otherwise.

But why would you choose something you don’t like in a restaurant?

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 08/01/2025 19:01

Urrgh, aubergine has the texture and appeal of phlegm. It's the most disgusting thing.

Go back, take a selfie with the same waiter and a plate of peppers, and send it to her.

FuckMeUpFlorida · 08/01/2025 19:04

I feel this way about courgettes and decided last year I won't eat them anymore. I'm very amenable otherwise, but I'm early 40's now and if I don't want to eat courgettes I won't. THE END.

OP, YANBU and I'm sorry you have a weird friend.

Tisthedamnseason · 08/01/2025 19:04

She's being ridiculous.

The staff will not even remember this, let alone that she was with you. And even if they did, I imagine people switch sides pretty frequently. No one will care.

OriginalUsername2 · 08/01/2025 19:05

ā€Oh that’s such a shame, me and DP have decided we are going to be regulars there now! Such lovely food and people. Where will you be eating?ā€

I'd tell her that she obviously has a very big sense of self-importance if she thinks that this is something that waiter will be holding against her. In terms of shit people in the service industry deal with every day, I doubt he ever thought of the banal situation again by the end of his shift.
Her and her husband are behaving like cry babies.

It was actually delicious enough that I will go back! So obviously she will never ever be able to enter again! The shame!

Aubergine is the chicken of the veg patch. I think you should stop being so picky and give it another go. I suspect you haven't eaten it properly prepared yet ?

If your chicken has the texture of aubergine then may I suggest you stop eating it and get your stomach pumped asap

Well, twitter use of emoji have clearly rotted my brain because I fully expected this to be a thread about lesbianism.

OP, you are unreasonable because aubergine (the vegetable!) is amazing, but your friend should respect your true authentic individual self and not act like a total dick.

Edited

I would put LARGE amounts of money on the fact that her husband gives no fucks or has gone ā€œyes dearā€ when being ranted at šŸ˜‚

arcticpandas · 08/01/2025 19:12

I think you need to take another pause from this friend. Meanwhile visit restaurant and make sure she hears about it 😁

You sound like the tuna of Mumsnet with that poor attitude to Aubergine. You need to try aubergine cooked and prepared properly in the future, I'm sure you'll like it. Good luck !

soupfiend · 08/01/2025 19:16

Aubergine isnt the issue, its the way she is behaving over completely normal restaurant behaviour. I quibble about everying, where is this from, how is this cooked, how is this served, does this come on top or separate. Can I change tables, can you remove the glasses they're cluttering up the table

On and on I go

She would love it!

poemsandwine · 08/01/2025 19:16

She sounds really full of herself. Perhaps a break is needed.

I also don't like aubergine.

Christmassoxs · 08/01/2025 19:16

I'd so love to meet your 'friend' OP I would have a field day just winding her up and letting her roll, I'm a bitch apparently, but that's fine with me.
Bring it on!

Topsyturvy78 · 08/01/2025 19:21

I like every other vegetable I'm not picky. But aubergine šŸ† is rank.🤢🤮

I’m vegan and eat loads of vegetables. The only way I can stomach aubergine is if it’s hidden in tiny pieces in a nice curry. Disgusting vegetable 🤢

Why are you sure the OP will like it?

Lots of people dislike foods which I find to be totally delicious. Lots of people like foods which I find to be revolting.

It's how taste and preferences work.

BMW6 · 08/01/2025 19:28

Well she's All Kinds Of Cunty isn't she! Personally I'd tell her to GTF. Life's too short and all that.
