To think I’m allowed to not like Aubergine

Writing this is making me realise this is bananas but it wound me up šŸ˜‚

Went for dinner with a friend who has a tendency to be hard work to somewhere she’s been twice before but is new to me.

I ordered a dish that came with a side of either roast Aubergine or roast pepper, as an avid hater of aubergine (one of THREE foods I don’t like so am v not fussy!), asked for pepper, they said they were out, I said not to worry, I’ll order a different side dish, they pushed the aubergine (because I would have to pay for a different side) and I said no thanks, not a fan, I’ll have X dish all good. The MOST uninteresting conversation and the most something and nothing situation šŸ˜‚

They brought the food out, apologised for no peppers and said my side was on the house. ā€œOh that’s okay please don’t worryā€ ā€œno no we insistā€ ā€œthat’s v kind of youā€ followed, ate (delicious!), lovely chat with the waiter and off we went

I cannot tell you what a non event this was šŸ˜‚

Friend was a bit funny over dinner not THAT unusual and turns out is VERY annoyed that I ā€œshowed her upā€ by telling them I didn’t like their food and asking for them to swap the dish. Apparently ā€œshe’s a regular there and is now way too embarrassed to go back after thisā€ and her husband is really upset they can’t go for his birthday next month because of this. I’ve upset them both.

Aside from ā€œshut up you utter knobshiteā€ I’m not really sure how to respond šŸ˜‚

I will just add that aubergine is one vegetable that has to be cooked till very soft. There is no point in having it roasted or fried in a decent oil, much of which will be absorbed. Boiled chewy aubergine is not enjoyable at all.

Not! There is no point in NOT having it roasted or fried in a decent oil. However, I sense I am casting my pearls before swine here. This thread is acting as a magnet for aubergine haters.

Grapesandcheseseplease · 08/01/2025 19:30

YABU for not liking aubergine but I’ll let you off since you haven’t eaten it at my house (which would obviously convince you it’s delicious).
You were very polite. Your friend is ridiculously and must spend a lot of time worrying about nonexistent offence caused.
I can’t stand mushrooms, actual fungus with a rubbery, vinegary taste. No thanks.

sonjadog · 08/01/2025 19:31

I suggest you reply "That's a shame, me and DH are planning on going there regularly šŸ‘šŸ»"

That will really wind her up.

Birdscratch · 08/01/2025 19:31

I’m assuming you missed out the part where you slapped them about the face with the menu and screamed, ā€œFuck you and your aubergine!ā€

Your friend has a very low embarrassment threshold.

That just made me snort loudly šŸ˜‚

Aubergine is the chicken of the veg patch. I think you should stop being so picky and give it another go. I suspect you haven't eaten it properly prepared yet ?

Bravo for the most superior irritating reply! She’s not picky, she’s an adult who doesn’t like a certain thing she’s tried many times before.

OP your friend is clearly batshit.

I love aubergine but no you were in no way unreasonable. Your friend sounds unhinged šŸ˜‚

Hwi · 08/01/2025 19:35

Distance yourself from this nutter! Dread to think what she might come up with in the future!

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 08/01/2025 19:37

I’m putting it out there guys, you can not and will not convince me to like aubergine. I have tried it countless ways, in countless restaurants and by countless cooks. It’s rank.

You sound like the tuna of Mumsnet with that poor attitude to Aubergine. You need to try aubergine cooked and prepared properly in the future, I'm sure you'll like it. Good luck !

I love aubergines but respect that other people do not. Maybe you should try it.

FavouriteFearlessHero · 08/01/2025 19:37

The best thing about being an adult is not having to eat food you dislike. I LOVE an aubergine - roasted with salt, pepper, oil and spices šŸ˜‹ but it's not for everyone.

Weird response from your friend unless you had a tantrum in the restaurant šŸ˜‚

Bananas on the other hand 🤢

But she knows how it should be cooked properly!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hendalle · 08/01/2025 19:38

Did she seriously expect you to have something you don’t like and choke it down? She is ridiculous.

I wonder if she was on the thread a few years back where the OP was insistent that adults weren’t proper adults if they didn’t cook and choke down foods that they don’t like.. I don’t remember much more than that, I was eye rolling so bad.

ForZanyAquaViewer · 08/01/2025 19:39

I’m pretty sure @Bogginsthe3rd is joking, people! 🤣

Your friend’s reaction is hilarious! Delightfully unhinged.

Try not liking potatoes! They are literally the only thing I don’t eat. Every other vegetable, starch…I even love offal! I just hate potatoes. I’m not awkward about it, I’ll just eat round them if it comes down to it. The way people react, you’d think I insulted their mothers or something. 🄹

PennyApril54 · 08/01/2025 19:41

I think you should just tell her she's being utterly ridiculous and as a paying customer you'll have whatever conversation you want to have with the restaurant staff and to mind her own damn business.

FrogsLoveRain · 08/01/2025 19:41

Your friend sounds like an attention seeking drama-llama.

Is she happy with her life? Does she have a full and busy life that keeps her occupied?

notprincehamlet · 08/01/2025 19:41

Apologise with a bouquet of aubergines

StormingNorman · 08/01/2025 19:44

Bit disappointed that we are actually about aubergines not šŸ†

YANBU.

AngryLikeHades · 08/01/2025 19:44

She's a crazy twit. You were politely assertive and she's nuts for saying her husband is too embarrassed to go back. Mental.

MadKittenWoman · 08/01/2025 19:46

I hate aubergine, unless it's pressed with salt to get all the moisture out, egged and breadcrumbed, then fried. Or maybe used instead of pasta in keto lasagne...bleugh.

sonjadog · 08/01/2025 19:31

Edited

Or better yet, offer to take him to his birthday dinner so he can still go. šŸ˜‚

Ohnonotmeagain · 08/01/2025 19:47

Why didn’t she pipe up at the time?

if she felt you were being rude refusing the aubergines or there was a problem she could have just used her words- get the aubergine mate, I’ll eat them and order an extra side for you.

but I love aubergine and would no way let anyone refuse free ones šŸ˜‚

Treesnbirds · 08/01/2025 19:51

@IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece

"Amazing šŸ˜‚ my mates husband dressed as an aubergine last year…I have ready access to a costume šŸ˜‚"

This is what's known as a Sign from the Universe.

😁

BlueWalker · 08/01/2025 19:52

I won't be too annoyed if there is a tiny bit of aubergine mixed in with lots of other veg that help minimise its textural impact, especially if there's some sauce or spice too to disguise the taste. But aubergine on its own or as the 'star' of a side dish can absolutely do one and I would have done exactly the same as you OP so as not to have to face the big purple minger. I am also not a fussy eater; there are only 3 foods I actively avoid but aubergine is one of them. Does your 'friend' have any foods she doesn't like? Maybe a box of liquorice or Turkish Delight to say sorry for 'embarrassing' her? You may guess from that suggestion what other 2 foods I also hate...
