To hate Americanisms...?

I think maybe because it feels like all English-speaking cultures are becoming boring and homogenous.

New ones I've noticed that people in the UK didn't routinely say five years ago but are now EVERYWHERE:

  • birth control (instead of 'contraception' or 'the pill')
  • wait list (instead of waiting list)
  • reach out

Which ones do you hate or AIBU?

Best not to bother yourself about things you can't control. Makes for a happier, less frustrating life.

PoissonOfTheChrist · 05/01/2025 23:00

'thighs you can't control' was a great typo APushbikeNamedReluctanceGrin

Swim meet
Fry pan
Flavourful - adding full to everything
Making uncountable nouns plural - drives me mad.

  • Privacy pounced Pr-eye-vacy instead of Privacy
  • Store instead of Shop
  • Cart instead of Basket or Trolley
  • Dump or Garbage truck instead of bin lorry or rubbish truck
  • Trash instead of rubbish
  • Patriotic pronounced Payte-riotic instead of Pat-riotic
  • Bangs instead of Fringe

Some Americanisms annoy me,
but not the ones you list.

One that annoys me is ‘I could care less’ when it should be ‘couldn’t’

The spelling irritates me (irrationally) or more so when Americans try to correct it eg if someone posts something from UK.

Minor annoyances though

Housewife2010 · 05/01/2025 23:03

Dove
Snuck
Gotten
Can I get?
Blush (it always used to be blusher)

Oh gosh yes! Trash instead of rubbish is annoying

More so because DS4 has taken to saying this (thanks Forky from Toy Story 4 🙄)

Deedee248 · 05/01/2025 23:05

Where to start….
Bake sale
Wait list
Jump rope
Band Aid
Kleenex
Specialty (no it’s speciality).
I could go on and on and on!

lazyarse123 · 05/01/2025 23:05

Pissed instead of pissed off. Happens on here all the time and I struggle to not correct it.

Tumblingthrough · 05/01/2025 23:06

(H)Erbs

KeenGreen · 05/01/2025 23:06

Thought of more!

‘Math’ instead of maths

and legos instead of Lego

minor irritations again 😬

Givemethreerings · 05/01/2025 23:06

Oh yes this one makes me Pissed too 🤣😉

CatchHimDerry · 05/01/2025 23:08

where do you all live? I don’t hear hardly any of these!

Apart from the “can I get” one, which everyone does say now actually. Probably me included, oops

DappledThings · 05/01/2025 23:08

Pissed when they mean cross rather than drunk. That's pissed off. Trash can for example is annoying but at least only has one meaning.

Pissed actively means something else.

Bridesmaids preceeding the bride.

Pomegranatecarnage · 05/01/2025 23:08

Can I get…? I always imagine the customer climbing over the counter to get their own beverage.
Math.
I could care less.
Diapers!

ueberlin2030 · 05/01/2025 23:08

Birth control isn't just an American phrase and actually better describes what it's referring to.
I've never heard anyone say 'wait' list
Reaching out is over-used but it's also not soley an Americanism.

XWKD · 05/01/2025 23:10

Going forward.

Gurney.

IdaPrentice · 05/01/2025 23:10

Young colleagues at work write 'gotten'. I find it infuriating.

Also I had to explain to my DD that's it's an americanism to say 'on the weekend' and 'on Christmas'.

Also to protest something, instead of protest about or protest at.

Paradoes · 05/01/2025 23:13

Cookies and trash (teacher and that’s all I hear)

Givemethreerings · 05/01/2025 23:15

Happy holidays instead of Christmas.

HRTQueen · 05/01/2025 23:16

Lego’s 🙄

Where is the S on the Lego marketing

and bangs

mathanxiety · 05/01/2025 23:18

@Kaleidoscopic101

A dump truck is not the same thing as a garbage truck/ bin lorry.

It's the truck (lorry) that carries large amounts of soil, gravel, construction/ demolition debris and can tip it all out at its destination.
