White socks over leggings

It's kind of ugly.
Personal preference of course (so let's not get too deep!), but it's everywhere right now and looks so awful that it turns me off buying any clothes paired with them. I can appreciate kids wearing them because younger people like to mess with convention but jesus they make even the longest legs look cut in half. Just no!

I don’t know where I’ve been as I have never seen anyone wearing this look. My teen and young adult daughters don’t wear it and I go to the gym regularly and not seen it (although everyone there is on the older side 😀)

Just googled and it looks practical. I do love sliders and socks around the house as I find that comfortable although dc tell me that’s out now.

I hate getting hot legs when I exercise

I can’t imagine the reason why you’d wear exercise clothing if you’re not actually about to go and exercise or on your way back from exercising. Otherwise take them off and go have a shower you dirty nugget.

I think we got here because sporty people had no 'shame' about running errands before and after their work out in their sporty outfit..people used to feel embarrassed about hanging around in sportswear after a workout for being unhygienicn and preworkout for looking like a faker but now it's acceptable to live in athleisure 24/7 ready for an.action that may never come. I do feel icky seeing sweaty runners doing their groceries but I know most people don't care about this anymore.

Catalogs · 30/12/2024 09:46

Because they’re DIRRRRTY

ShimmySkirt · 30/12/2024 09:46

It's also part of making the entire personality as sporty (runner, gym..) when you walk around in that gear(gym bum scrunching leggings 24/7) it's performative as well.

Edit: actually picking up groceries after a workout is more understandable than the runners who sit in cafes with their sweaty backs on chairs, hanging around in their moisture wicking fancy fabrics. It's a cult! They want to maximise being seen as fit active and sporty so they loiter around in their sweaty sweaty bettys et al 💀💀💀

I think it looks good on young people but not very flattering when you have cankles like me!

Bring back leg warmers

I wear leg warmers. Get yourself to urban outfitters.

(they look tons better than white socks over leggings)

Needmorelego · 30/12/2024 09:57

This was the thing in the 80s/90s.
Although it was often mismatched colourful socks rather than white.
Fashions always come back around.

Crackers4cheese · 30/12/2024 10:16

am currently wearing red walking socks over my trousers

Newgolddream70 · 30/12/2024 10:29

Well I am wearing the red socks they gave me in hospital once because I didn't bring slippers. They are like totes toasties with non-slip rubbery bits on the soles. Damn stylish if you ask me 😁

A school Mum friend in her 40s (and a decade younger than me) said she refused to do the white sock over leggings trend because it was too 'try hard' at her age.

LionMaine · 30/12/2024 10:44

It keeps the ankles warm but I also kind of like the look. I like the contrast of black against a lighter colour.

Black socks worn with black leggings look odd to me, it looks like I’m wearing tights.

I also can’t bring myself to wear ankle socks anymore. So 2007😆

Dovestree · 30/12/2024 10:51

Worldgonecrazy · 29/12/2024 08:50

It’s a young person thing. I have no idea who can look at someone wearing it and think “That’s a great look / can’t wait to copy it.”

I agree. If you're under thirty, crack on, but I saw a woman heading for fifty sporting this look yesterday and cringed so much.

Globusmedia · 30/12/2024 11:39

They don't work for my short legs, makes my slimmest feature look chunky! Whereas trainer socks make my feet and ankles look all delicate and graceful.

I do think it looks quite good on other people though.

I like those too, they're great. The best place I've found for them is Asda.

'White Socks over Leggings'...🎼

Wasn't that one of Julie Andrew's favourite things?

Comff · 30/12/2024 19:06

Ladybyrd · 29/12/2024 12:10

One of the moms (CF who will blatantly push in at the school gate) does it thinking she's one of the cool kids. Yanked up her calfs with crocs. Grim.

Bitter and jealous much?

Ladybyrd · 30/12/2024 19:13

@Comff Bitter and jealous of crocs? No, I'm good, thanks.

Bring back leg warmers

I love leg warmers, couldn't care less if they're in style or not, they keep my ankles and shins warm.

fashionqueen0123 · 30/12/2024 19:16

LadyChilli · 29/12/2024 08:52

I would, but for the fear of looking like a tragic almost 50 year old trying to look like a youngster. I think it's a great look though, makes me think of 80s leg warmers.

Same!
I think I’d look like an utter prat if I did it in my 40s.
Reminds me of 80s leg warmers and 90 slouch socks!

Bring back leg warmers

Did leg warmers go away?

OnePeppyDenimHelper · 30/12/2024 21:24

Love it.

Beatzzz · 30/12/2024 21:30

I’m 40 and love wearing socks over my leggings. I go to the gym a lot but I also
wear gym wear when I’m not at the gym because it’s so comfy. I think the best thing about turning 40 was stopping worrying about what other people think.

PixieLaLar · 30/12/2024 21:33

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 29/12/2024 08:49

Love them. So comfy, warmer, cold exposed ankles are no longer a thing. No more annoying trainer socks slipping off your feet inside your trainers. I have a couple of pairs of leggings that are slightly too short but that doesn't matter any more because the socks hide the length. This is one trend I hope stays for a long while!

This!

iwentjasonwaterfalls · 30/12/2024 21:38

I hated it when I was teaching; not only because white socks were against uniform rules but also because I thought it looked ridiculous.

I got some nice white socks for Christmas and put them on over my black leggings 😳 ashamed to say I quite liked it 😳

zeddybrek · 30/12/2024 21:39

Seen this around here for a while, end of COVID year. I thought it was a fad and tried it and my goodness, so comfortable. I don't care how I look but will never go back to cold ankles again. As they say, don't knock it until you try it.

AmiablePedant · 30/12/2024 21:42

Pottedpalm · 29/12/2024 09:05

I agree; leggings are not outerwear. I don’t want to see your lardy arse and bulging thighs, thanks. At least wear a longer jumper.

Old enough to remember leggings back in the 80's/90's PAIRED WITH THE LONG JUMPER OR TUNIC. Most women have better legs than hips; it was a kind look. (Whimpers nostalgically.)
