White socks over leggings

It's kind of ugly.
Personal preference of course (so let's not get too deep!), but it's everywhere right now and looks so awful that it turns me off buying any clothes paired with them. I can appreciate kids wearing them because younger people like to mess with convention but jesus they make even the longest legs look cut in half. Just no!

It's precisely because older people don't/ won't wear it that they wear it.

Just a teeny rebellion - let them have it!

RuthW · 29/12/2024 13:05

White socks are never a good look for anyone unless you are under 5.

It's the fashion but why start a thread criticising something that will probably be read by people who wear them. Ugly?

But, as long as you get to post in an attempt to find your little tribe.

It’s ok to criticise a fashion trend isn’t it? I have not noticed the white sock thing, but if there was a thread on hating Uggs, Crocs or Birkenstocks, I might join in! My daughter has all three and knows I don’t like them, but doesn’t care! Surely we can still laugh at fashion trends?

I liked cold-shoulder tops when they were in fashion. There were lots of people saying they hated them. I was not remotely bothered!

Love them. So comfy, warmer, cold exposed ankles are no longer a thing. No more annoying trainer socks slipping off your feet inside your trainers. I have a couple of pairs of leggings that are slightly too short but that doesn't matter any more because the socks hide the length. This is one trend I hope stays for a long while!

Same here! Although I have to admit I shall be doing this long after the trend has gone away 😂

It’s a young person thing. I have no idea who can look at someone wearing it and think “That’s a great look / can’t wait to copy it.”

Someone described the beige leggings/ white sock look as resembling a chicken drumstick. That sums it up really

ShyTed · 29/12/2024 13:29

I love them!
Nice & cosy ankles.
Each to their own.

DinkyDale · 29/12/2024 13:42

I do this when I'm going to the gym, and I CBA to shave my legs. Doesn't matter if my leggings ride up when squatting as the socks cover it. I wear black socks though...

MuchTheSameThanks · 29/12/2024 13:43

I do this and I'm 57... only on my way to/ from a gym class though.
My socks aren't pure white though- they're usually white tie dyed Nikes.

ChillysWaterBottle · 29/12/2024 13:44

This has been the mum uniform for a long time in my area. I like it. I also liked the millennial invisible-sock look. I guess I'm pretty easy going on legging and sock combos.

RobertaFirmino · 29/12/2024 13:48

Perfectly acceptable for the gym and any other exercise. Can look very, very scruffy elsewhere though. Aside from sportswear, I'm not certain that 'stylish' and 'flattering' are attributes that can be associated with leggings. Still, I'm certainly not going to tell other people what to wear.

IncessantNameChanger · 29/12/2024 13:54

I don't like the look of it personally. Black leggings, white socks, cross or fluffy sliders on teens / young adults. Now I have teens I remember with cringe my mum.telling me she could be my sister and dressed younger than me. I don't want to stay bang on trend. I'm not going to dress like my teens mates.

Uokhunnnn · 29/12/2024 14:36

It would be so nice to see a thread about women’s fashion without the words “mutton” or “age appropriate” popping up 🙄Hasn’t happened yet but I live in hope!

Yes of course but it depends how you do it. Calling it 'ugly', 'looks awful', 'legs cut in half' - across the board, rather than stating that it looks like that on you personally.

I remember the cold-shoulder top threads you refer to and they were horrible with judgements at the wearers, rather than the fashion itself. That's what's wrong with it. Saying, for example, "Cold shoulder tops look rubbish on me/make my stomach look fat/whatever..." doesn't slap a judgement on anybody else who might like or wear them.

Strikeoutnow · 29/12/2024 15:36

I thought it was on the way out as I’ve seen less if it.

Strikeoutnow · 29/12/2024 15:37

It's precisely because older people don't/ won't wear it that they wear it.

The teens are defo not wearing it anymore!

Ohhhthedrama · 29/12/2024 16:00

@LLlynTegid - Not just UK. It's big in North America too.
I personally love it. It's comfy and a trend that's accessible to all ages and budgets. Long live leggings & tube socks.

Member984815 · 29/12/2024 16:02

Was this not the style late 80s early 90s ? Does nobody remember slouch socks? I used to wear them and tights with ankle socks over

TammyJones · 30/12/2024 06:52

I can’t remember as it’s years ago.
but I have been spired and actually found a set of 3 pairs on Amazon, which I have ordered- delivery Friday 😀

ThejoyofNC · 30/12/2024 06:54

Some of you are highly judgemental. I'm sure you're all the height of fashion.

olivehater · 30/12/2024 06:55

Love them. Always hated trainer socks. Comfy, warm. Also love leg warmers over leggings in the winter. Get cool Nordic patterned ones. All about the comfort!

Catalogs · 30/12/2024 06:59

It’s not chic

it’s just an excuse to avoid a waistband imo

Catalogs · 30/12/2024 07:00

I hate getting hot legs when I exercise

I can’t imagine the reason why you’d wear exercise clothing if you’re not actually about to go and exercise or on your way back from exercising. Otherwise take them off and go have a shower you dirty nugget.

olivehater · 30/12/2024 07:23

True catalog. Who wants a hard waistband digging in their stomach when they are going about their day!

Catalogs · 30/12/2024 07:25

Only if it digs!

loose waistbands are the gateway drug to weight gain

olivehater · 30/12/2024 07:29

Well wecan’t all svelte flat stomachs after three kids so happy to have a trend that works for my shape! There are plenty around that don’t.
