White socks over leggings

It's kind of ugly.
Personal preference of course (so let's not get too deep!), but it's everywhere right now and looks so awful that it turns me off buying any clothes paired with them. I can appreciate kids wearing them because younger people like to mess with convention but jesus they make even the longest legs look cut in half. Just no!

I was given three pairs of leg warmers last week, the brand is ELLE and knowing the giver they would be from Amazon I wore the pink ones and my neighbour shouted, I want to live forever at me. Bless him.n

Surely you wear black socks rather than white if you're doing it to keep your ankles warm? I do think trainers and bare ankles look ridiculous in the winter, especially paired with a massive duvet coat.

mrpinkwhistlescat · 29/12/2024 11:30

I'm over 60 and have tried this look, but only for very casual wear.
I really want to try the crew socks with a skirt or dress look, but haven't been brave enough yet ( might be a mutton issue).

Ariela · 29/12/2024 11:58

Is this a thing now? Thought only horsey people wore socks over jodhs / breeches ?

Bellaboot · 29/12/2024 12:02

I'm annoyed it's considered now a teenage thing as an old fitness instructor who has been doing it for years🤷

LlynTegid · 29/12/2024 12:05

This is the UK. Most people don't do style. Not helped by our high street (and online) fashion retailing which is a disgrace.

Far too often I think people are wearing leggings to be 'comfortable' instead of recognising weight gain or simply that they are a different clothing size than they think they are.

Socks over leggings are not the main awful trend.

ShimmySkirt · 29/12/2024 12:06

I think it makes calves look more shapely and sporty. It's also really comfortable and practical but definitely a young people's look ditto socks and sliders, gorgeously comfortable and cool but questionable on older folks.

honeylulu · 29/12/2024 12:07

I get wanting to have warm ankles in the winter but why oh why not match the socks to the leggings colour so it blends in. The long white socks over black leggings looks like a four year old or someone with unfortunate leaning difficulties trying to dress themselves. Don't people look in the mirror before they go out?

ShimmySkirt · 29/12/2024 12:09

White socks specifically is a bit of a cult, on social media it means you're clean, your home floor are clean, you're sporty, into cool music. Black socks are considered a turn off for some young people like you're hiding dirt and uncool. I think this is crazy but it's what's circulating in places like TikTok.

Ladybyrd · 29/12/2024 12:10

One of the moms (CF who will blatantly push in at the school gate) does it thinking she's one of the cool kids. Yanked up her calfs with crocs. Grim.

Over40Overdating · 29/12/2024 12:11

I love it - trainer socks are the work of the devil.
Socks stay where they are supposed to whilst I’m working out and warm ankles on the way home.

This is really interesting! I only wear black socks (95% of my clothing is black tbf). Maybe everyone thinks my house must be a filth pit! 😂

Or it means you soak them in diluted bleach before washing. DP wears white socks with work boots. His feet get wet and the staining is awful. I couldn't believe it the first time I tried - it's a god send. Also works a treat with spaghetti sauce stains on the kids white tops. I must have binned 20 or so before I discovered it.

I've embraced longer socks over trainer socks now, but you won't catch me wearing leggings unless you see me going to or from the gym, I still don't understand grown women wearing gym wear for anything other than the gym. Don't get me started on tracksuits!

Agree. Sportswear is for sport in my eyes!

CatPhonePot · 29/12/2024 12:30

I am not on TikTok. I had no idea white socks were a ‘thing’. I thought they were just white socks. Silly me!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 29/12/2024 12:32

It's the fashion but why start a thread criticising something that will probably be read by people who wear them. Ugly?

But, as long as you get to post in an attempt to find your little tribe.

liveforsummer · 29/12/2024 12:35

I wear slouchy socks with leggings and ankle boots keeps my feet and ankles warm and also goes a way to disguising my super skinny ankles that make my legs look like triangles 😆. I match the colour to my top usually. I don't care what people think as I'm warm and comfortable (and now seemingly on trend although I've been doing it for years)

allmybooksarefromthelibrary · 29/12/2024 12:35

I’ve been doing this for a couple of years now and I’m 47! I like the look and it is comfortable 🤷‍♀️

Pulled up to the knee for the horsey folks. Slouched down otherwise

Bring back leg warmers

Interestingly I wear leg warmers with dresses, skirts and DM's or converse/trainers and I love them.

I'm 49, fat and work with teenagers and have been told that they look 'quite cool actually' unprompted by quite a few of the said teenagers ranging from ages 12 - 17 and whilst I haven't seen any of them copying me, they seemed genuine enough that I don't think I look like a nob.

Whilst I like the fashion, I feel I would be trying too hard if I did the white socks over legging thing as they all do that, but the leg warmers seems to be an age appropriate variation and I like the different colours.

Whattodointherain · 29/12/2024 12:54

I mostly wear black leggings with black ankle socks underneath them, so my ankles are warm. I thought this was the usual way so am surprised nobody has mentioned this. Now I'll be checking everyone out to see if I'm weird!
(I'd like to stop wearing leggings all the time but they are so comfy and my bulgy tummy feels uncomfortable in normal trousers).

I wear ankle socks under then a pair of thicker slouch socks on top (plus have sheepskin insoles in my boots). Too cold with just the ankle socks in winter

northernballer · 29/12/2024 12:58

I do when out running.

As othwrs have said I only wear leggings and gym wear for sport though so wouldn't otherwise.

Notmycircusnotmyotter · 29/12/2024 13:01

It's the difference between millennials and Gen Z. Millennials (I am one) wore trainer socks and Gen Z love the big white ones.

I've got loads and love them!
