AIBU to complain about book display

Visited the library today to get the kids some books to read over the holidays. They had a display of recipe/diet/cook books in the entrance. I was quite taken aback to see Gregg Wallace on the front cover of one of the books, I didn’t say anything but surely the library staff are aware of the news? I don’t think the council should be promoting him, surely no one is going to take the book out anyway.

What harm do you think it will do? Gregg won’t be earning any money from people taking his book out. I don't think we should be censoring and burning books because someone has been accused of something. Think of all the authors in that library and some of the terrible things they must have done.

LetsNCagain · 20/12/2024 21:44

I thought authors did get royalties when you borrowed their books from the library

LetsNCagain · 20/12/2024 21:45

It's called public lending right, or something

WorriedRelative · 20/12/2024 21:47

Authors are paid for library loans.

Growlybear83 · 20/12/2024 21:49

Why would you bother to complain?

TTPDTS · 20/12/2024 21:50

I mean he's technically not been charged / convicted of doing anything? So not too sure if they've got to take the books off just after the accusations, it's a bit of a grey area - innocent until proven guilty and all that. I just wouldn't personally borrow it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Vaxtable · 20/12/2024 21:50

YABU.

Rainyblue · 20/12/2024 21:51

Many librarians now are volunteers, they might not even be aware of the issue. Also you may be surprised but not everyone follows the news.

My response would be ‘urgh, Gregg Wallace’ but I don’t think I could get worked up enough to complain to the library about it.

Nothing better to do.

As if libraries aren't struggling enough without people complaining about this sort of thing.

teatoast8 · 20/12/2024 21:53

YABU

Even if they are aware it's kind of outside of their remit to start making decisions about which books should be displayed and which shouldn't.

People are capable of deciding which books they borrow from the library.

hagchic · 20/12/2024 21:55

So don't take out his book then.

Otherwise leave other people to make their own decisions.

If you look closely there are going to be rather a lot of authors/contributors in that library that you wouldn't like.

Creepybookworm · 20/12/2024 21:56

What would you like the library to do? Throw away all his books? Bit wasteful.

wafflesmgee · 20/12/2024 21:56

YABU you can still use his recipes, surely?
Fair enough don't buy his books but it's a library.

CaptainAwkward · 20/12/2024 21:57

Just take a non damaging sticker of a giant cock and place it over his face

poemsandwine · 20/12/2024 21:58

YABU. Librarians have enough to deal with.

MMAMPWGHAP · 20/12/2024 22:00

Why didn’t you just move it?

MiriamCavendale · 20/12/2024 22:02

I actually think you should say something. He’s grotesque.

ForPearlViper · 20/12/2024 22:03

I have disliked the man for many years with every fibre of my being. But I think you are being unreasonable. I doubt the team at library even it noticed it was still there.

However, I would have picked up the book under the pretence of being interesting and reshelved amongst a group of feminist titles. He'd hate that.

theotherfossilsister · 20/12/2024 22:03

Let them know, sure, but don’t formally complain

CatAteMyDinner · 20/12/2024 22:04

Ex library worker here.

Yeah you could mention to the library staff, or simply swap it round hahaha! Book displays change all the time as books on display are frequently chosen by users. If you swapped it most library assts would just assume it had gone out on loan / wouldn't notice. There is no mandate for what gets displayed it's just a nice bit of the job to pick out some books on a theme, so nobody would feel strongly about swapping it their side.

But yeah a bit of an odd choice! Not worth a complaint.

Mt563 · 20/12/2024 22:07

Might want to be careful with all the other books, especially classics. Many authors don't live up to the ideals we'd like them to.

GallyGaff · 20/12/2024 22:10

Mumsnetters seem.to have a strange obsession with complaining and reporting.

blackerfriday · 20/12/2024 22:11

YABU it's a fucking cookery book.
