AIBU to complain about book display

Visited the library today to get the kids some books to read over the holidays. They had a display of recipe/diet/cook books in the entrance. I was quite taken aback to see Gregg Wallace on the front cover of one of the books, I didn’t say anything but surely the library staff are aware of the news? I don’t think the council should be promoting him, surely no one is going to take the book out anyway.

This is verging on censorship… feel free not to borrow it , the issue isn’t about his cooking.

ijustneedtokeepbreathing · 20/12/2024 22:16

He hasn't been charged let alone convicted of anything, so why would you complain? On the grounds that he is (allegedly) an arsehole?! Well, am sure plenty of authors are. Come on op ...

Mumsnetters seem.to have a strange obsession with complaining and reporting.

Do you??

Viviennemary · 20/12/2024 22:20

Get a grip. He isn't a serial killer.

icebearforpresident · 20/12/2024 22:24

I work in a library and personally if I noticed it (big if, you go blind to some of the book displays after a while) I would move it off the display and onto the shelves but we wouldn’t be getting rid of the book altogether considering libraries are battling to keep the doors open never mind replace books by men who turn out to be exactly as sleazy as we suspected him to be.

If it's still there next time you go in just move it yourself, don’t waste the staffs time complaining about it.

Wonderi · 20/12/2024 22:24

Not everything needs to be a complaint.

These are usually run by volunteers and struggle to stay open as it is.

If people don’t borrow it, then they’ll eventually rotate the books and he’ll go towards the back.

Oh get a grip. Yes, he's been gross, but he isn't a mass muderer or paedophile as far as we know.
You cannot have been that outraged because you didn't have the nerve or courage of your convictions to complain.
If you were so taxed about it, you would have kicked up a fuss instead of just whining here.

Let them know, sure, but don’t formally complain

Why not formally complain if this dreadful display was giving OP the vapours?

CranfordScones · 20/12/2024 22:34

Why can't library users be trusted to make their own choices without your intervention?

NINP · 20/12/2024 22:46

Perhaps you’ve read 1984? If not I recommend it. People who transgressed were wiped out of existence by having all records removed, all their works destroyed. Is that the sort of thing the OP is hoping for? That when someone transgresses we will never see their name or photo ever again ( except for the two-minute hate) and they must dwell in isolation never making a penny again?

Abra1t · 20/12/2024 22:51

Authors get royalties from a sample of libraries across the country, not every single library. It is done on a rotating basis, roughly every three years.

So perhaps that library wasn’t even on the current list.

Sidebeforeself · 20/12/2024 23:00

Will the books spread Gregg germs to anyone who touches them?!

Pancakeflipper · 20/12/2024 23:02

Perhaps a user of the library put it there thinking they are naughty/hilarious/bit of a kick?

Tubetrain · 20/12/2024 23:02

IsANameImportant · 20/12/2024 21:43

What harm do you think it will do? Gregg won’t be earning any money from people taking his book out. I don't think we should be censoring and burning books because someone has been accused of something. Think of all the authors in that library and some of the terrible things they must have done.

Yes he will, not much but something

DitzyDerbyBabe86 · 20/12/2024 23:03

Edingril · 20/12/2024 23:09

We can go back to banning or burning books like America does that sounds really healthy

Thedishwasherbroke · 20/12/2024 23:10

He’s fairly revolting and sleazy but he’s not actually been charged, much less convicted, of anything criminal. Removing literature by everyone who doesn’t meet some set of arbitrary moral standards is going to leave a very bare library. You’d probably be getting rid of every political memoir for a start…

QuestionableMouse · 20/12/2024 23:12

I wish my life was boring enough for this to be an issue.

Nikitaspearlearring · 20/12/2024 23:16

I wouldn't have liked seeing it. I might have shoved it right at the back.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 20/12/2024 23:17

At 45, Charles Dickens fell in love with an 18 year old actress. Perhaps we'd better stop having his books in libraries on account of him being a lecherous old sleazebag...

DarkAether · 20/12/2024 23:21

Plus what about all the music people still listen too when the authors are omg behaviours eg elvis for one ??

Unless you're willing to research the backgrounds of every single author they stock, YABU.

Jc2001 · 20/12/2024 21:55

Even if they are aware it's kind of outside of their remit to start making decisions about which books should be displayed and which shouldn't.

People are capable of deciding which books they borrow from the library.

Edited

This was a specific display of recipe books. Of course the librarians decide what goes into it.
