To ask why men feel the need to spit?

Just why on earth?! Why would spitting in the middle of a street ever be necessary and why is it only men who seem to feel the need? Do they think it makes them look more alpha male or something? Never witnessed a woman doing it (thank god)..

Absolutely vile habit. Downright disgusting and disrespectful. I have no idea how anybody can be in a relationship with a man who does this - instant turn off.

For context - I witnessed a young boy, approx age 10 purposefully spit on the ground as he was walking down our street to school this morning. Obviously wasn’t born doing that!

People that spit are disgusting.

None of the men I know would consider it normal behaviour.

It's absolutely repulsive and if I ever become queen I'll be making a new rule that anyone who does it is sent straight to the tower.

I have only ever witnessed males doing it. No, they are not people I know personally as I would not associate with anyone who thinks that it’s acceptable.

It's some kind of territorial marking thing, like urinating.

That made me queasy just typing that.im male and find it disgusting behaviour.

I lived in China for 12 years and also saw women spitting in the street. It’s absolutely vile imo.

I asked a friend why he did this. He said it was because he built up excess saliva in his mouth and it was the best way to get rid of it. He didn't have an answer when I asked why he didn't just swallow it.

Do men suffer from excess saliva more than women and is it hard to swallow it?

You know exactly what my thread meant and are choosing to be difficult. I explicitly said that I would never associate with a man who spits. How exactly is that ‘tarring all men with the same brush’?

The same reason men do many of the things they do. Because they can.

Reminds me of when I was small it was old men who spat in the street. Once I asked my auntie if my granddad ever spat. She said,"Only in his handkerchief." For context granddad was only 40 when killed in WW1, but to my mind granddad implied old man.

Except the key detail that you leave out was my actual post.. I suggest that you read things a bit more carefully in future to avoid further confusion.

Spitting was made illegal due to tuberculosis being endemic in the country early last century. It is a bye-law in many areas but not often enforced. Not sure if it was acceptable behaviour before then just as peeing or defecating in the street is now socially unacceptable, at some time in the past it was probably normal to just lift your skirts or spit if you felt the need to.

I agree it’s grim but only because it’s unhygienic. The act of spitting is not an issue if done into a tissue or privately. How else do you quickly remove stuff from your mouth?

I’m dentist, so I see most of my patients spitting. I don’t expect my patients to swallow a mouthful of blood or polishing paste.

It's not my thread. But of course not all men spit. But the people who spit are men. So as a class they do, even if, as individuals they don't.

They see footballers do it. The disgust of a middle aged woman doesn't beat twatty millionaires chasing a ball around a field.

You very rarely used to see it. IMO it’s footballers who’ve somehow made it ‘acceptable’, by their disgusting spitting on the pitch.
