To ask why men feel the need to spit?

Just why on earth?! Why would spitting in the middle of a street ever be necessary and why is it only men who seem to feel the need? Do they think it makes them look more alpha male or something? Never witnessed a woman doing it (thank god)..

Absolutely vile habit. Downright disgusting and disrespectful. I have no idea how anybody can be in a relationship with a man who does this - instant turn off.

For context - I witnessed a young boy, approx age 10 purposefully spit on the ground as he was walking down our street to school this morning. Obviously wasn’t born doing that!

It’s disrespectful and completely unnecessary. I hate it. Never seen a woman do it.

At least the craze for chewing tobacco died out, let’s be thankful for small mercy’s

I’ve heard it said that it is, and I quote, ‘gay to swallow’.

Another reason given, ‘it will make me sick (as in catch a cold, etc’.

As for other cultures, it’s culturally accepted for men & women to spit. Amongst these delightful UK males, it’s also culturally accepted, within their specific sub-culture of cretins.

I was shopping in our city centre and a group of Chinese tourists passed by me. One of them cleared her throat of flem and spat it all over my feet (I was wearing sandals) .I was so taken aback and so disgusted .I yelled at her but she was quickly ushered away by her companions .I was left standing there with a big lump of God knows what on my foot. unbelievable.Spitting in public is just appalling.

I live in an area that is very much dominated by a culture whose men think it's acceptable, maybe even mandatory, to spit. They do it constantly and the pavements can be quite disgusting at times. Occasionally some of the women also do it.

I agree with everyone else, it’s absolutely bogging!! No need at all. Just swallow it instead of hacking it up and spitting it out.

I think it’s quite clear from my OP that spitting privately into a tissue, at the dentist etc isn’t an issue. I’m a HCP and see bodily fluids all day everyday, of course I understand that sometimes there is a need to spit. It’s the needless ‘alpha male’ spitting on the streets that needs to stop.

Young adult DD has reliably informed me that it’s coming back into fashion…! 🫠

It's foul to see I'm of weak constitution and at times makes me heave not pleasant.

It's trashy scummy behaviour. I haven't seen anyone do it in forty years -apart from footballers. I don't watch football very often.

I have never seen a woman spit in the street now you mention it.

It's the joggers/runners too, almost got spat on by one running past me, he had plenty of opportunity to gob it out but decided to do it as he passed me. Did he think I'd be impressed?

I've often felt it's a way to show people who's boss.

I've had men do it near me and every time it's felt designed to intimidate.

Women spit too so why are men as a class relevant?

My Boss had a business meal in China and said they had a bowl to spit the fish bones in.
