To ask why men feel the need to spit?

BeatriceAndLottie · 20/11/2024 20:10

Just why on earth?! Why would spitting in the middle of a street ever be necessary and why is it only men who seem to feel the need? Do they think it makes them look more alpha male or something? Never witnessed a woman doing it (thank god)..

Absolutely vile habit. Downright disgusting and disrespectful. I have no idea how anybody can be in a relationship with a man who does this - instant turn off.

For context - I witnessed a young boy, approx age 10 purposefully spit on the ground as he was walking down our street to school this morning. Obviously wasn’t born doing that!

In my experience it is. Never witnessed a woman do it in my entire life. Men on the other hand..

It's cultural. I've witnessed non British women spit in the street and have seen it when visiting other countries.

They really, really don’t. Female footballers somehow manage to retain some class and refrain from spitting. Why can’t the males?

Because they're pathetic.

Didn’t you know being an elite athlete means you can no longer manage to swallow the massive volume of spit you create? But only male footballers naturally.

Talk about projecting!

I’ve seen plenty of women do it - it’s far from a male only thing.

BeatriceAndLottie · 20/11/2024 20:13

I have only ever witnessed males doing it. No, they are not people I know personally as I would not associate with anyone who thinks that it’s acceptable.

My next door neighbour is a woman and always hacking and spitting. I swear she does it every time she sees me as some kind of intimidation tactic.

I was shopping in our city centre and a group of Chinese tourists passed by me. One of them cleared her throat of flem and spat it all over my feet (I was wearing sandals) .I was so taken aback and so disgusted .I yelled at her but she was quickly ushered away by her companions .I was left standing there with a big lump of God knows what on my foot. unbelievable.Spitting in public is just appalling.

That's fucking disgusting.
I think it's cultural though. We have a large Nepalese community in the town over, and there's always reports of them shitting in changing rooms. It once happened in LIDL in the middle of the isle and they had to close and get everyone out.

I felt so awful for whoever had to clean it. I'd flat out refuse and resign on the spot.

Boomer55 · 21/11/2024 16:55

It’s a vile habit, and didn’t used to be common. 🤬

TheDeftSwan · 21/11/2024 17:18

It’s vile and disgusting and a lack of respect for others. It should be against the law. A person may need a no.2 but doesn’t mean they’ll pull down pants on the pavement as it’s not accepted by anyone.

what we should be talking about is what should the punishment be and how would it be enforced?

@Deathbyfluffy "I’ve seen plenty of women do it - it’s far from a male only thing."

I have never seen a woman spit in the UK.

The level of BWDIT on this thread is bizarre.

Sometimes I need to spit but will do it at the side of the path, in a drain or a sink

Well lots of us have. So what's the problem with pointing out women do it too?

CurlewKate · 24/11/2024 15:12

"Well lots of us have. So what's the problem with pointing out women do it too"

Some people have. And the problem is that people tend to normalise/minimise male pattern bad behaviour by saying "but it's not men-women do it too". And public spitting is almost exclusively male behaviour.

It's not only men. I've seen women do it

Henrythehappypig · 24/11/2024 15:19

I saw a cyclist attempt to evacuate his nostril straight on to the path once. He clearly misplaced his hand because next second he was weaving all over the path as he furiously shook his hand. Served the grim fucker right.

Who cares if it's male bad behaviour or unisex bad behaviour?

Spitting is bad behaviour, it's gross and it doesn't matter whether it's a man or woman, it's still gross.

Saying women do it too doesn't make it less disgusting to spit or excuse the behaviour. If only men did it that wouldn't somehow make it worse.

If OP had posted why do PEOPLE spit it's gross instead she wouldn't have a thread full of people saying women spit too, she would have a thread full of people agreeing her and maybe having a more productive conversation.

QuaintAquaSnail · 24/11/2024 17:30

I saw a man do it on the school run last week with his 10 year old in tow.

I wonder what these people do at home? Do they keep getting up to go to the sink or do you think they have a spittoon?
