What’s the mum “uniform” in your area?

Is there a mum “uniform” - aka what you’d typically see someone in the playground or at the school gates wearing - in your area, and if so what is it?

I recently moved from Highgate to Finchley Central and it’s pretty different, despite being just two tube stops apart

CE / Highgate mums seemed to all wear Birkenstocks, hiking boots, straight cut jeans, parkas or Patagonia fleeces and fair isle or cashmere jumpers with hair in a messy bun.

Finchley Central mums are all in floral dresses Chelsea boots, blowdries, make up and proper coats and look at my scuffed old Blundstones as though I was living rough in a caravan… Not that I’m going to do anything about it mind, I’m very attached to my boots and fleece, but it’s odd how different it is

Mostly gym or dog walking wear

Incakewetrust · 18/11/2024 01:17

Shein two piece sets are seen on a fair few of the mums but most wear whatever they want to.
The school 5 mins up the road however...straight leg jeans that stop at the ankle, white tank tops and oversized pastel shirts open on top.

Also as an aside I only found out a few weeks ago that lululemon wasn't pronounced lulu le mon, I thought it was a posh french brand 😄

Omg how is it pronounced?

malificent7 · 18/11/2024 13:22

This is one of the many reasons why I do not miss the school run.

There is a huge mix of mums, dads, and grandparents at our school, and people wear anything - including hoodies, jeans, leggings, gym gear, dresses, work uniforms, duvet coats, dry robes, heeled boots, denim jackets, old cardigans, tracksuit bottoms.

In the posh town nearby it would be more like your Highgate look. Floral dresses and proper coats is not a look I have seen round here. I sometimes wear a proper wool coat for work though. Maybe they have come from work?

Glad its not just me @boysmuminherts 😄

I don't even know what Blundstones are!

Goodtogossip · 19/11/2024 12:44

Here in the North East we have a mix of Mum uniforms at Primary school drop off/pick up. Working Mums in suits long M&S wool coats, small heels, neat hair bun or ponytail. Non working trendy SAHM Skinny jeans, short Boden mack with hood, converse, Pony tail. Non working chav Mums, if not PJs, two piece tracky (mostly branded), Canada Goose parka, Chunky trainers, messy bun or full on blow dry.

Tried on some of their clogs. Very comfy.
Spenny tho.

There is a woman in Lewes who walks back from Pells pool (outdoor lido) with just a towel wrapped around her. Swimming costume clearly already removed, presumably poolside. She lives fairly close, but even so she obviously has more faith than me in her towel-wrapping skills.

That’s brave, I can’t even walk from the bathroom to the bedroom without my towel slipping after a shower! I bought one of those poncho ones for swimming but it gets regular use at home too…

LoyalMember · 21/11/2024 08:30

Glasgow area here. Messy bun, a fleece, joggy or tracky bottoms and Uggs.

IceStationZebra · 21/11/2024 08:34

Regarding mum uniforms… if I’m going into the office I am one of the smartest, despite my office looks being quite casual - biker boots and a dress, or wide legged wool trousers and chunky trainers with a fine knit jumper from Uniqlo. If working from home I am in gym leggings, trainers, and a hoodie/t shirt. I’m an elder millennial so can’t do the socks-pulled-up look, it’s just wrong.

Once I had to pick up on a sunny Friday in full PPE - I work in construction - so I stood out a bit that day in my dayglo orange coat and trousers.

Everyone else is a complete mixture, & I’ve only noticed the mum who’s always in pyjamas, smoking (in the playground) and holding a can of energy drink. She looks a mess.

Why do people take ussue with people wearing changing robes as coats? I have an oversized one to keep me dry as most coats end above my wellies and the water just runs off into them. Very warm too. I wear a normal coat most of the time, but on a day like today (wet and snowy) I will be wearing it.

Mine was a cheap kids one from Next and was no more than 55 quid. Not everyone wears them because they want to pretend they are a wanky middle class person that is desperate to portray they have a very hardcore, active lifestyle. In my case, it is practical to wear one to keep dry. I expect that's why most people wear them - because they are practical and they don't mind looking like the grim reaper on the school run.

Can’t say I’ve noticed many Birkenstocks and hiking boots worn in Highgate 🤔
I don’t recognise your description at all.

I cannot stand the camouflage and hot pink one. Just the worst possible colour/print combination. Any other colour, knock yourself out, it's surely just a parka with a towelling lining?

Ooh I have a camouflage one, orange lining. But I wear mine for after wild swimming not to the shops.
