What’s the mum “uniform” in your area?

Is there a mum “uniform” - aka what you’d typically see someone in the playground or at the school gates wearing - in your area, and if so what is it?

I recently moved from Highgate to Finchley Central and it’s pretty different, despite being just two tube stops apart

CE / Highgate mums seemed to all wear Birkenstocks, hiking boots, straight cut jeans, parkas or Patagonia fleeces and fair isle or cashmere jumpers with hair in a messy bun.

Finchley Central mums are all in floral dresses Chelsea boots, blowdries, make up and proper coats and look at my scuffed old Blundstones as though I was living rough in a caravan… Not that I’m going to do anything about it mind, I’m very attached to my boots and fleece, but it’s odd how different it is

Re dry robes - living by the coast lots of people have them here (Devon) but b rarely dry robe branded - usually regatta/go outdoors etc £60 rather than £160. Go over the border in to Cornwall - so many actual dry robes worn by every other person usually up country folk - so can believe they’re very popular in inland playgrounds

We were at a rugby festival in Bromley a couple of weeks back, and every second parent was in a dry robe.

DH does actually own one (swims in the Lido) but he wouldn’t wear it as a normal coat. Not least because they are hard to wash, so the inside is likely full of sand and dried salt if you have actually used them for their intended purpose!

Also want to know how I can identify a shein set?

🤣🤣🤣 I also wondered this

TheKoalaWhoCould · 14/11/2024 21:52

It’s spread to Worthing and Hastings too….

I don’t really understand the clashing mad toddler prints obsession myself but to each their own!

I have a pair of the plain dungarees but I did unpick and remove the brand tag before I wore them Grin

My primary school mum uniform switched between office wear (on offfice days) and iron maiden t shirt (yes I can name at least 3 songs)/jeans. Mix of office wear, sports clothes and wag outfit for the mum whose kid had some kind of contract with a football team. Didn’t really pay much notice although was on nodding terms with a mum who wore a metallica hoody (always good to see another metal head in the wild)

Fellow iron maiden fan here 🤟🏻🤟🏻🤟🏻

Tiny rural school in the south west.

No particular uniform tbh.

There's one mum who regularly does the school run on horseback Hmm

And another mum who always wears double leopard print and stripey leg warmers and a hoodie that I assumed for ages was an Adidas one but noticed a few weeks ago actually says Labias and the logo has been altered to look like clitorises 😂

Other than those two who stand out a bit, it's just a fairly bland mix of athleisure/work clothes/farm clothes!

  • Cockapoo called Lola, Penny, Monty or Archie

😂 this is definitely part of the look here

As no-one's allowed to take dogs into the playground, there's a long line of cockapoo type mutts tied to the railings at school drop off. I'm waiting for the day the wrong one gets collected

Hello there sister - are you going next year? (Also love shetlands even if they can be moody shits😂

AuraBora · 14/11/2024 22:18

I'm in Hampshire. Affluent market town - large primary with real mix of backgrounds. Really no uniform to speak of - I recognise some of the trends mentioned here but there is such a mix, no one style or look more prominent than any other really.
The dry robe trend - surely that would only make sense if pre or post-swim or similar?! Otherwise a bit weird..
Can't stand the white socks pulled up trend but each to their own.
Sometimes I'm in gym gear (athleisure) as I find it comfy and conducting to a workout. Sometimes more dressed up.
Probably more variation in clothes in summer.
I don't see many who look well 'turned out- as such.
Minimal make up, think most people don't care too much...

Duckfeather · 14/11/2024 22:18

South-West here and there is definitely a uniform in my area. Leggings and hoodies or long ‘dry-robe’ type things. Lots of trainers. There are a few who buck the trend, sometimes in dresses or jeans but nobody is ‘done up’.

To be fair, I’m normally in gym clothes too for drop off but that’s because I go to the gym straight afterwards. Also I do love my Run and Fly dungarees and DMs (on non gym days!)

Oh I’m sure most of these only had the fibres of skinny jeans and boden tops trapped in their fleece)

Wow! This is so London 😂😂, it’s definitely not a fashion parade where I live in Northamptonshire, it’s whatever is clean !

Wow that’s, um, an assertive look 😱

I don't do the school run much (and live in Berkshire not London) but when i do i see lots of full length puffer coats. I'm sure they are nice and warm but they make the wearers look like a load of hot water tanks waddling along.

When i was last on ML (2014) the mum uniform was jeans, black converse, breton stripe top and olive green parka. Absolutely every "mum" character on TV had the same parka! I had one and it wasn't at all flattering but very comfy though I had to stop wearing it because it made me look like a shoplifter.

This made me laugh. While me and sister were both on mat leave in 2014/15 we called our green parkas our shoplifting coats and had to stop wearing them as felt security guards in shops were following us about 😂

AnneShirley18 · 14/11/2024 22:31

In Northern Ireland it is 4th Arq fleeces in various shades or long, black padded gilets.

Mishmashs · 14/11/2024 22:33

The whole dry robe thing is funny. I live by the sea (the school is a five min walk from the beach) and while I see plenty of swimmers and dry robes on the beach they are never seen in the playground. My theory is that people here only wear a dry robe immediately before and after swimming and the water is so cold you have to head home to have a hot shower and properly warm up before heading out again, at which point people put on a normal coat as the dry robe is damp inside from having been worn imm after swimming. They’re def not seen as a daywear coat here but kept for their purpose.

Toomanyusernamestochoose · 14/11/2024 22:37

How do you know when someone wears workout clothes but doesn’t exercise? When doing morning run, I’ll be in workout clothes because I go to the gym daily but I don’t exactly announce it to everyone who sees me!

LiarLiarKnickersAblaze · 14/11/2024 22:45

South west here and there’s a mix of trends mentioned in this thread. I don’t really look to be honest. I just wear what I want and avoid people who show weird tribe behaviour like this.

Exactly- the dry robes on up country folk whilst we were in Cornwall started to become a running joke

FeetLikeFlippers · 14/11/2024 22:55

This all sounds really grim but then I never really had to deal with the whole competitive mum at the school gates bullshit, which I’ve always found very weird and sad. I had to google dry robe (I thought they were for getting changed on the beach??) and Shein two piece (I was imagining those hideous beige ribbed things that the Kardashians wear, and was right) and most of the brands people have mentioned. I just don’t understand why some people want to conform or look like a walking cliche. I live in London and I love clothes but I just do my own thing and don’t worry about whether it’s acceptable or up to date or whatever it is these uniform wearers are trying to achieve. In fact the mums at the school gates would probably have a field day bitching about me!

Copernicus321 · 14/11/2024 23:03

Wellingtons and strong shoes arriving in pickups and cars scratched by brambles that haven't been washed since forever.

DinosaurMunch · 14/11/2024 23:06

Mostly gym wear or sports brand lounge wear here, some jeans and sportswear jumper types, occasional work wear but usually uniform not smart, one or two hippyish types. Hair is mostly long and blonde on the mums. Long and brown on the grandmas.

Definitely no pyjamas round here - mostly blue collar type work. There is a definite look though! I ts not just school mums it's the town in general - I really notice it when I go somewhere else.

Medium north west town

DinosaurMunch · 14/11/2024 23:09

Also false eyelashes are a strong trend here. About 10% of the mums wear them every single day

sarahjnm · 14/11/2024 23:10

Essex resident here - not born and bred - so Essex is an eye opener
Fridays esp near Christmas you'll see rollers in the hair at pick up.
Lots and lots of stocks over leggings with the same old trainers..
Think I could pick out 4 of us mums that are a tiny bit trendier!
Tbh glad I'm not inner London mum, couldn't stand the 'fashion off' every day 😅

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 14/11/2024 23:12

I wish I wasn't such a "sheeple" as my DH calls it, and worry about fashion or trends as much. I'm probably a) too old, and b) look silly in all the so-called fashionable things people here wear.

One of my neighbours (who is really lovely) kind of epitomises the style I aspire to but it is very much following the trends and probably looks good on her as she's younger and slimmer lol 😆

She wears the usual "uniform" of New Balance or Adidas Sambas with white Nike/Adidas socks, massive black or cream maxi puffer coats, trousers that are baggy/baggier than anything I'd ever probably look good in, beige raincoat, cream/beige smart long coat, with black baggy trousers and Adidas Sambas... you get the picture.

Basically, most mums wear this stuff to the school run. My DD who's 13 says I'm sad to look like one of "them" implying I'm probably too middle aged to conform or try to look trendy! 😅😳😅🤷
