What’s the mum “uniform” in your area?

Is there a mum “uniform” - aka what you’d typically see someone in the playground or at the school gates wearing - in your area, and if so what is it?

I recently moved from Highgate to Finchley Central and it’s pretty different, despite being just two tube stops apart

CE / Highgate mums seemed to all wear Birkenstocks, hiking boots, straight cut jeans, parkas or Patagonia fleeces and fair isle or cashmere jumpers with hair in a messy bun.

Finchley Central mums are all in floral dresses Chelsea boots, blowdries, make up and proper coats and look at my scuffed old Blundstones as though I was living rough in a caravan… Not that I’m going to do anything about it mind, I’m very attached to my boots and fleece, but it’s odd how different it is

Dry Robe people are called Dry Robe Wankers in our part of the country

MightyGoldBear · 14/11/2024 23:14

I hope I am forgiven for wearing leggings as I cycle to school. I'm so happy to of made it to school via an exhausting hill, I'm not sure I've taken any notice what others are wearing at all. Haven't noticed a uniform.

Life's too short to care surely.

I find posts like this really fascinating, having had two children but never done 'school runs', I have also now stopped doing the occasional grandchild school run. Most of what I saw on the latter was normal clothes according to the weather/season, do people really study the type, make etc of other women's clothes and find it important? Don't they have lives to live?

I didn't study it, just observe it.. no it's not important. It's no different to noticing birds in the garden. I notice it as part of living my life.

Presumably you are too good for all that as you're above doing school runs?

What’s CE?! Been trying to work it out!

minipie · 14/11/2024 23:22

Crouch End I expect

Twangy · 14/11/2024 23:23

I drive past two primary schools a few miles apart from each other on my way to work and from what I can tell, the mum's wear anything from leggings and t.shirts through to the more formal work stuff.
The only uniform I see is on the lollipop ladies.

Small NE town, fairly deprived demographic. There's no uniform at all here, everyone wears different things, personally I wear leggings, jumper and a long padded coat with sketchers trainers that used to be white.

TheBirdintheCave · 14/11/2024 23:32

Is this a thing? I've only been doing the school run since September and can't say I've noticed too much about what anyone wears. There is one mum who is always very smart looking in a trouser suit and kitten heels as she's clearly going to work straight after drop off.

I'm going to pay more attention tomorrow and see if there's a theme 😂

kennycat · 14/11/2024 23:52

I’ve given up
on the school run now as my youngest is year 6 so I just boot him out the door on the days I don’t t work and see him again at 4 but before that it was a mixed bag.
mainly leggings and that caper though.
I can’t bear leggings. They look ok on other people but I feel like my lard will spread if I exist in leggings. Tights are different; they hold you in!
I Generally live in stripy tops (work or not work days) and skinny jeans on no work days or a mini skirt in work days.

on the subject of jeans, I keep trying to move away from
skinny jeans but everything else looks weird when I look in the mirror after years of skinny legs!

UndertheCedartree · 14/11/2024 23:59

Used to be a lot of leggings, hoodie and long bodywarmer. But then some in smart office wear and some in jeans and top.

Lwrenn · 15/11/2024 00:04

Unremarkable here, leggings and hoodies, mini Ugg boots and long coats. pleather leggings were popular for years but not seen as often any more.

3 of my cousins from where I lived originally all had electronic ankle tags when their kiddos were at school.
Such a vibe 😂

Snoopybird · 15/11/2024 00:07

I’m one of those people whose tastes haven’t really moved with fashion and I’m stuck still liking what I did when I was 20.

So my outfit is non-fancy ankle boots, just above the knee denim skirt with chunky tights and a jumper or sweater or some description, with a knock-off hiking style raincoat from Matalan if it’s raining. Hair generally loose, straightened but going frizzy.

I wonder what these stylish mums would think of me 🙈

nats2010 · 15/11/2024 00:25

Those fucking long shin/ankle length puffy things with no sleeves (think ankle length body warmer) and a hoody underneath. Gives me the ick. 😖🥴

healthybychristmas · 15/11/2024 00:44

GroovyChick87 · 14/11/2024 15:24

Dry Robe, leggings and Crocs with sports socks pulled up high over the hem of the leggings. Awful. That's North West.

That is the worst combination I can imagine!

TofuTart · 15/11/2024 01:35

Am I the only one who has seriously never noticed what other mums are or aren't wearing and seriously couldn't give a toss?! 😁
I wear what I wear because I like it/it's comfortable the only thing clean 😁 and assume others do too 😁

I should probably know this but: how is ‘Shein’ pronounced? Is it Shine or Sheen? Or something totally different?

It's She In - I can't help saying 'Shine'!

I know it's one of those heavily-researched international names, but my brain glitches on being asked to pronounce it as two separate words. While typing this, I've just realised I might have more success if I say 'Sheehan'.

I mean, nobody cares how I pronounce it but it's a niggle!

JennyWren87 · 15/11/2024 02:48

Walsall chiming in. Care worker/nurse uniform, gym wear (those pants that crawl up your bum), regular old jeans and puffer coat.

Darls3000 · 15/11/2024 03:57

West London and it’s only the school kids wearing north face nuptse jackets. Mostly wide jeans and cashmere with a Frankies Shop jacket or Canada goose coat. Counted 15 in the playground the other day. Footwear is golden goose, sambas and DMs. Fridays is the Lulu lemon day.

CrowleyKitten · 15/11/2024 04:34

don't worry about it. just wear whatever you like to wear. I'm sure people thought I looked really weird today, because I was wearing a T shirt and hippy patchwork purple trousers, then grabbed my tailcoat and bowler hat on the way out of the house to keep warm as they were the closest.
does it go? no way.
did I feel fine about what I was wearing? of course I did.

Passthegin99 · 15/11/2024 08:00

NE London and the school run uniform is casual! A lot of tracksuit bottoms, trainers or boots and big oversized coats. I'm the only one that regularly does pick up covered in mud (gardener) but no one cares! Could not cope with floral dress land!

iloveshetlandponies · 15/11/2024 08:07

@Feelingathomenow yes I am indeed ! We're going to the London show . You ?

I'm so excited . I last saw them at download in 2022 and they were amazing 🤩

Yes going to London and Birmingham. Can’t wait should be amazing - bloody nightmare getting tickets. Are you standing or seats? last saw them in on the current tour in Birmingham last year! Saw Bruce twice this year too! Definitely the best live band ever! Looks like Nicko is improving too from what I’ve heard of the American leg.

Its going to be busy in London, Linkin park are playing Wembley the same night!

Btw have you seen the Women in Heavy Metal thread?

Babbahabba · 15/11/2024 08:36

Why is there a "mum" uniform? Mums aren't different to women without children. They aren't more likely to wear one thing over another. Like all women, they're not one homogenous group, they're a very diverse group of women with different tastes/styles.

iloveshetlandponies · 15/11/2024 08:38

@Feelingathomenow

I had tickets to see them in London last year but couldn't go in the end, we Had catastrophically expensive car problems so had to sell them to go towards the car, I was gutted

We're standing, I prefer it; I'm short so I cant see much 😝 but I feel more "in the action" iyswim

No not seen the women in heavy metal thread, will seek it out 🤟🏻
