What’s the mum “uniform” in your area?

Is there a mum “uniform” - aka what you’d typically see someone in the playground or at the school gates wearing - in your area, and if so what is it?

I recently moved from Highgate to Finchley Central and it’s pretty different, despite being just two tube stops apart

CE / Highgate mums seemed to all wear Birkenstocks, hiking boots, straight cut jeans, parkas or Patagonia fleeces and fair isle or cashmere jumpers with hair in a messy bun.

Finchley Central mums are all in floral dresses Chelsea boots, blowdries, make up and proper coats and look at my scuffed old Blundstones as though I was living rough in a caravan… Not that I’m going to do anything about it mind, I’m very attached to my boots and fleece, but it’s odd how different it is

I find it fascinating that you all have time to notice what other mums are wearing. I’m so busy trying to get my kids there on time, answering a zillion questions, trying to stop them getting run over, that I have no clue what anyone wears. Clothes of some kind!

I’m usually wearing something comfy and warm - leggings, jumper and a coat.

Very very tight workout leggings
New balance trainers in pale/nude colours
Long duvet coats
Dry robes
Office wear

I am by far one of the scruffiest mums as I have usually walked a muddy Labrador twice and worked from home all day by the time I pick up from school. Dh does the morning drop off.

Aren't workout leggings tight by default?

Sound London suburb mum here. All in long puffa coat eg the football coach look. Plain boots from M&S. no make up and messy bun.
its not a glamorous look which is nice as no pressure

I may jabe found my people in my duvet coat and fly boots although I'm in the north west

Apollo365 · 14/11/2024 20:26

Wow nothing like a uniform here. Most mums dressed for work, in a uniform (nurse or other) or the working from home type comfy clothes, some straight to the gym. Not many messy buns or pjs 😐

Some people are just more observant of their surroundings

North wales. Literally anything goes.
No one cares 😂

iloveshetlandponies · 14/11/2024 20:33

Suburban midlands , mixed income

I wear either my work outfit (black scrub top with my business logo on and black leggings and crocs )

Or my running gear

Or my ankle length black north face puffa, gym leggings, long socks and white new balance .which seem to be a very popular outfit on this thread ...I never realised I was so trendy (or basic. lol) but I love that north face coat it's like a sleeping bag

Loved the post up thread that ten years ago it was all skinny jeans, breton tops, green parka and converse, that was my uniform back then as well 😝

Unroll those eyes.

funinthesun19 · 14/11/2024 20:34

Black flared leggings, jumper and sleeveless jacket, trainers.
Leggings and ankle ugg boots.

I’m in a European country, i’d say now it’s cooler temperatures, people are wearing long wide trousers & jeans with Adidas in different colours (not white anymore) navy blue jumpers, jumpers with the shirt underneath, collar & cuffs showing, lots of burgundy-burgundy tops, bags etc. Also t shirts with little cardies and a layered necklaces with shorter, flared jeans and Boston birkenstocks, no coats yet. The wealthy ex pat set are still in the leggings, long socks, Nike or NB trainers, with the puffa jackets, botox and big lips

CraftyNavySeal · 14/11/2024 20:35

I live in Tower Hamlets, it’s 70% full length Islamic dress and 30% Carhartt/Uniqlo/Lucy & Yak

Still is my ideal outfit! 😄

West London over here, no one gives a shit. We just wear what we want. We have mums in work uniform, joggers, dresses, some even in pjs 🤦🏽‍♀️

Toptops · 14/11/2024 20:40

Um, am I the only person reading this who thinks it weird?
How do you even know the makes of clothes they are wearing?!

Mummysgonetobed · 14/11/2024 20:41

Yorkshire.
the leggings that go up your arse crack, oversized sweatshirt, pulled up white Nike socks and a pair of new balance.

i think it’s ridiculous but then I’m old and wear office clothes!

No I have no idea of the brands. I once admired a mum's warm coat and a dad wore a "zany" shirt once but that's it. Everyone else is too busy rushing to pick up their kid after work

Skyview7 · 14/11/2024 20:41

Move to Hull

Toptops · 14/11/2024 20:42

Btw, no I am mostly not at the school gates these days but when I was, don't think there was a 'uniform' beyond the everyday jeans and tops....

iloveshetlandponies · 14/11/2024 20:42

@Apollo365 it is! It's so cosy

MamaorBruh · 14/11/2024 20:43

Cheshire: Sweaty Betty leggings, Adanola sweater, new balance trainers with sports socks pulled up over them.
Long puffa type jacket when cold.
I dont fit in with my whatever I've grabbed off the floor and half brushed teeth look going on...

TheKoalaWhoCould · 14/11/2024 20:46

South Coast here. A lot of passenger fleeces and dry robes. Lucy & Yak everywhere you look. Ubiquitous nose piercings.

The weirdness is how the tribes change despite being in close proximity to each other.

it’s also realllly interesting!

Can one of the Highgate crew please link me a fairisle cardigan? Sounds lovely!

SE London, have noticed Lucy and Yak dungarees or baggy trousers, chunky knits, black Doc Marten style boots or Birkenstocks (Arizona or Bostons) depending on the season. Lots of athleisure, usual brands seem to be Sweaty Betty, Lululemon and Adanola.
