What’s the mum “uniform” in your area?

Is there a mum “uniform” - aka what you’d typically see someone in the playground or at the school gates wearing - in your area, and if so what is it?

I recently moved from Highgate to Finchley Central and it’s pretty different, despite being just two tube stops apart

CE / Highgate mums seemed to all wear Birkenstocks, hiking boots, straight cut jeans, parkas or Patagonia fleeces and fair isle or cashmere jumpers with hair in a messy bun.

Finchley Central mums are all in floral dresses Chelsea boots, blowdries, make up and proper coats and look at my scuffed old Blundstones as though I was living rough in a caravan… Not that I’m going to do anything about it mind, I’m very attached to my boots and fleece, but it’s odd how different it is

What's a Shein Set? Is it a track suit type of thing?

I thought I was the only one who doesn't know what this is ! .

Gosh it must be nice to have nothing to do all day other than the school run.

Ouch

Pippy2022 · 14/11/2024 19:20

Dry robes and shein sets sound bloody awful.

It's a total mix here in Kent thank God.

Another West London. So much Anine Bing. All pushing bugaboos with the odd babyzen yoyo. I recognise a fair few wyse shirts too, in this weather the collars are poking out of the knitwear. Fair amount of athleisure. I still see quite a few people golden gooses around, which is surprising. Loads of adidas sambas. The dads are all in Patagonia. These parents are often found in babboe style cargo bikes.

I love handbags so I’m always eyeing them up and a few of the mums at nursery have mini balenciaga city bags, its own microtrend and it’s made me want one!

Recent influx of women carrying the lulu Guinness Waitrose shopper.

I literally don't know what half of those words mean! 🤣

Suzuki76 · 14/11/2024 19:25

South West school. It's mostly a mixture of mums in uniform (Supermarkets, nursery workers, cleaning companies), mums who have shoved on a bit of mascara, a decent jumper, jeans and trainers for a casual office (me) or mums in leggings and hoodies on mat leave with younger ones.

I don't see the corporately dressed mums as they commute to Bath or Bristol and use breakfast and after school club!

CalliopePlantain · 14/11/2024 19:34

Joules Mac and wellies

JiminaSlump · 14/11/2024 19:35

'Shein suit'
Seasalt Breton, skinny jeans
Hoodie, jeans, wellies
Long cardigan, wide leg jeans, white trainers
Midi dress, long cardigan, DMs
Quarter zip fleece, straight leg jeans, white trainers
Hoodie, black leggings, white sports socks, slides
Work uniforms (often nurses)

Those are the mums I've noticed. Not much of a uniform - just a collection of styles.

Graffigne · 14/11/2024 19:37

Please can someone link what Shein sets are? Midlands mum here (Barbour wellies, skinny jeans, Schofel jacket, bobble hat) 😂

Forgottenwhatitwas · 14/11/2024 19:38

Can people really tell what brand leggings etc someone is wearing just by looking at them? Genuine question from someone with zero fashion sense....I wouldn't have a clue what other people are wearing to be honest

GrinAndBear · 14/11/2024 15:07

I’m not really worried about it. I was more or less unaware there was a specific ‘look’ or that I was conforming to it in Highgate. But since moving to somewhere where about 80% of the mums dress alike and I’m not in that 80%, I’ve started noticing more and taking a bit of an anthropological interest!

Perhaps in time the Finchley Central look will seep in and my and my hair and boots will get slowly glossier and I will only notice it when I up sticks and move again.

I do think it is interesting from an anthropological angle 😂. I live in a mostly working class northern town, and would describe myself as very uncool/not trendy and sticking out from others in the playground. My casual clothes are wide or regular leg cropped jeans with hiking boots or retro trainers (or Teva's in summer). Lucy and Yak/Passenger/Patagonia fleeces and wooly handknit jumpers and socks. I was shocked when I was in a playground in East London and discovered loads of the mum's dress just like me. Same brands I have never seen on others at home. I wasn't uncool it turns out, but nor am I original, I just wear the wrong school uniform.

guffaux · 14/11/2024 19:39

we live near one primary school, and a follow-on school with junior and secondary , plus an acadamy with a 6th form...just pointing out there are a range of ages and not only seen on the school run as such, just out and about

mums- long black sleeveless puffer, with a white or light coloured jumper under neath, black just above ankle length leggings/running tights, white socks pulled up, dark trainers (not sure of the make, its not something I recognise), hair in a high ponytail or bun,the mum who lives a few doors away has an incredible bob but she's an exception (her cut is so stunning I thought it was a wig!)

dads-jeans and half-zip fleece, usually blue shirt underneath, trainers, or brown leather lace up boots

usually accessorised by cars you have to climb into, black or very dark grey

and lots and lots of dachsunds near me, and they are adorable!

kids have lush hair falling artfully into their eyes (boys),or long shiny and swishy (girls)- usually in their school uniforms, 6th formers lots of band tee shirts and slouchy jeans....and they never seem to feel the cold!

I'm in London and this doesn't resonate with me at all. I see people in smart work clothes, scruffy work clothes, gym clothes, traditional dress of different cultures, plus lots of jeans and t shirts. I haven't noticed a 'look' at all

Same - maybe it’s where we are? I’m in Lambeth, the school catchment includes £2m houses in Herne Hill and the council estate off Coldharbour Lane, and everything in between.

I don't do the school run much (and live in Berkshire not London) but when i do i see lots of full length puffer coats. I'm sure they are nice and warm but they make the wearers look like a load of hot water tanks waddling along.

When i was last on ML (2014) the mum uniform was jeans, black converse, breton stripe top and olive green parka. Absolutely every "mum" character on TV had the same parka! I had one and it wasn't at all flattering but very comfy though I had to stop wearing it because it made me look like a shoplifter.

Love that...hot water tanks!

Old chavvy school had gym wear and mothers in crop tops occasionally

Nice school- everyone just wears what they want and no one cares :-)

Cosmo676 · 14/11/2024 19:52

I am a new mum, baby starting nursery soon and in a nicer Gtr Manchester suburb I’d say so very interested to see what everyone is saying. My style has gone! God knows what the new mum style will be…

It's Gobbledegook, is babboe made up or really a brand?

MarceyMc · 14/11/2024 20:07

As someone on maternity leave who spends a lot of time convincing myself that no one cares how I look on the school run, this thread has sent my paranoia through the roof 🤦🏼‍♀️😂

Pre mat leave I'd be in office wear, but currently it's leggings and a hoody/sweatshirt/fleece, trainers, hair in a bun or pony and no make up. Currently getting very little sleep and don't want to waste any precious hours in bed getting up early to put myself together. Depending on how the day is going, I'm usually changed into jeans and looking a little more presentable by the time pick up comes around.

Our school is a real mix of office wear, jeans, leggings or other casual dress, profession uniforms, etc. Honestly couldn't say there is any 'uniform' at all (or not that I have noticed). We're in an affluent Greater Manchester suburb.

It’s really a brand https://www.babboe.co.uk/big there’s normally at least 5 taking up the whole pavement by the school and filling up people’s front gardens! Everything I mentioned is a real brand, it wasn’t a piss take post 🤣

I work full time and I'm a single parent - going to the beach pre work is one of the joys of WFH. Even on these November days there is a good community down there - all year round in fact. Many post school drop off Mums catching a swim before work.

Drop kids at school (mine usually walk now but I do still give a lift occassionally), head to beach, swim, sauna, home in time to start work at 9.30.

Truly bliss.

I've started going to early moring yoga now so my morings are now: yoga/home for coffee & change into swimsuit and dryrobe/swim/sauna, home for work.
Beats lazing around in bed doom scrolling (which I can still do if I dont get up & get going).

I'm happier than I have ever been & these mornings have a lot to do with it.

I like the sound of your life! where do you live?

SquashPenguin · 14/11/2024 20:13

Ankle length puffa gilets, sliders, socks, tracksuits and the occasional dry robe.

Town in the valleys of South Wales.

MsNeis · 14/11/2024 20:18

Uhm... I often see mums around me wearing jeans, t-shirts/sweaters, jackets and shoes (trainers, boots...). Clearly I'm no fashion Sherlock, am I? 😅

Mylittlebobble · 14/11/2024 20:19

Deprived area. Huge mix of clothes, and ages/ sexes doing the school run. Leggings, jumpers and trainers on the whole. Also, work wear and uniforms. No one looks particularly 'done up'. Never seen pjs.
