To think this is OTT for a child’s party

took my 4yo to a party for a child at his nursery at the weekend. It was jungle themed and Ive never seen any parent go so all out for a party before. The whole place (church hall) was outfitted in themed decorations all handmade. I’m not kidding when I say it must have been HOURS of work in making these decorations. I’ve been to weddings that were less decorated than this. I’m talking themed handmade bunting going back and forth, themed balloon decorations (made not bought), a table runner, homemade props everywhere etc.

is this seriously what we are doing for parties now or is this parent seriously out of touch?

I honestly can’t imagine spending my evenings up to my elbows in glue and faff for a 2 hour party for 4year olds!

They can do what they want for their child, you can do what you want for yours!

SpanThatWorld · 06/11/2024 18:43

If it gave the parents pleasure making the stuff, why not?

DecafDodger · 06/11/2024 18:44

Eh, if it makes the parent happy..

Kids won't care. Some of the best birthdays mine have had included 0 decorating or entertainment, just let them all run around and play.

Bakedbeansandtoast · 06/11/2024 18:44

I hope you enjoyed it.

Sirzy · 06/11/2024 18:44

If it’s what makes them and the child happy then that’s fine

ZeroFucksGivenToday · 06/11/2024 18:44

Absolutely their choice. Sounds like they've enjoyed doing it. If you don't want to that's fine.

Flossyflop · 06/11/2024 18:44

Why are they out of touch?

I wouldn’t do it and you don’t have to either but it’s completely up to them!

Maybe they’ll see your glowing review of the party on here if the mum is a mumsnet user.

SardinesOnGingerbread · 06/11/2024 18:44

I hope the parent doesn't read this. It feels pretty mean spirited and rather unclassy to bitch about a party you were hosted at.

InformEducateEntertain · 06/11/2024 18:44

I would politely suggest that you do you.

Baconandddddeggs · 06/11/2024 18:44

Totally their choice - let them do them and you do you…

Maybe it gave them serious pleasure to do this?

maybe they paid an army if helpers to help them achieve this.

each to their own,

you might think it’s ott - but why judge them? It didn’t hurt you!

Hope the kids enjoyed the party.

TheFluentGoldNewt · 06/11/2024 18:45

Like there were these jellyfish made out of balloons and streamers and one whole wall was a covered in waves made from fabric to use as a background for photos (for children who won’t stand still for five seconds) And there was coral seaweed made from card and paper standing upright everywhere

nomorehocuspocus · 06/11/2024 18:45

Sounds amazing - not sure I'd have gone to that much effort though.

winewolfhowls · 06/11/2024 18:45

Sounds lovely and much better than the usual soft play hell

Allwillbewell2 · 06/11/2024 18:45

Sounds wonderful, and if it brings the parent(s) joy to create such things then good luck to them! You just sound a bit bitter OP, hopefully your child had a lovely time as it seems whomever set it up went to a lot of trouble for a great visual experience for the children invited as well as the birthday child

TipsyKoala · 06/11/2024 18:45

Why out of touch? Maybe the parent enjoys crafting and making decorations.

TheFluentGoldNewt · 06/11/2024 18:46

Yeah tbf my son enjoyed it but he also likes two hours of screaming round a soft play! Don’t think he gave a shit about the decorations

TheShellBeach · 06/11/2024 18:47

Some people are just very creative.
You sound jealous.

Martymcfly24 · 06/11/2024 18:47

Crafting is a hobby. Maybe they genuinely enjoy it and it is a chance to share their love of it with their child and other people.

SometimesCalmPerson · 06/11/2024 18:47

It sounds brilliant! Just be happy your child got to go to an amazing birthday party instead of being critical of other parent’s choices. If spending hours making decorations made them happy then good for them.

TheFluentGoldNewt · 06/11/2024 18:47

Not bitter just amazed
anyone could be bothered! It must have been in the bin five minutes after the party ended

Wendysfriend · 06/11/2024 18:47

Sounds lovely, tbh there's usually just a handful of themed things available to buy in store, you'll find the child wanted jungle stuff and there wasn't much available to buy so they made it plus it will have worked out cheaper so a win for everyone.

LillyLeaf · 06/11/2024 18:47

Why 'seriously out of touch'? If that's what they want to do, why not? The parents obviously enjoy making crafts, I doubt they would hand make everything if they weren't creative types. I love making costumes for my boy and sometimes gets asked why I bothered, I always say because I like making them.

sparklyfox · 06/11/2024 18:47

I would just be grateful for being treated to such hospitality. It sounds really fun. Doesn't mean you have to replicate it yourself, just be happy to be invited.

Rickrolypoly · 06/11/2024 18:48

Awe I guess she just loves her child more than you love yours 😘

Ragruggers · 06/11/2024 18:49

She may be thinking of starting a party business ,there will be people who love themed parties and will contact her.
