I mean, seriously, hasn't musk done enough damage for one century? There are so many social media platforms to choose from. So, why stick with x/twatter? The only "free" speech you are going to get there is if you agree with trump-musk

I think because it takes years to find your community on line. I've looked at BlueSky and Threads but found neither particularly appealing. Perhaps I need to persist. Can anyone advise on other platforms?

Oreyt · 06/11/2024 09:19

X is the one I resort to if companies are ignoring me.

LettyToretto · 06/11/2024 09:19

The memes/trolling of figureheads is glorious

Sethera · 06/11/2024 09:22

Same reason people are on here - they like the sound of their own (online) voice 😁

ExtraOnions · 06/11/2024 09:23

I came off this morning … it’s not only depressing .. I see things, some nasty violent things, that I just don’t want to see. I don’t seek that sort of thing out on the internet, I don’t want to stumble across it, when I want to look something up about a TV show or something.

I am going to give Threads another try .. just wish there was an easy # search like on Twitter

SnapdragonToadflax · 06/11/2024 09:25

It's very good for current affairs - if something important is happening, the conversation and most up to date information is on Twitter. I only really use it for politics as a social media platform, but it's also useful for when the trains aren't running, or you have a complaint about service. Or just for seeing what other people think of a Strictly dance!

Until another platform works in the same way and has the same coverage, we're stuck with it. The amount of right-wing crap is incredible though.

LostTheMarble · 06/11/2024 09:28

It’s a cesspit, but if there’s breaking news or rumblings about something/someone then it’s the first place I look to be perfectly honest. It’s such a massive worldwide connection, someone will give information the mainstream media can’t/wont share. Probably the biggest double edge sword in modern history.

I agree.

I've never actually posted on Twitter, but it's good for information. I follow journalists and news organisations, it's useful.

However, having said that, it's getting worse and worse. Half of it is ads and spam and pointless crap unrelated to what you search for.

LostTheMarble · 06/11/2024 09:31

The far right and far left are both horrific arseholes on Twitter. You’d think they were the only voices/viewpoints in the world going on how much of a platform they have on there. Sadly it’s fully seeped into politics (not just the USA).

Pust · 06/11/2024 09:32

It’s mostly where my industry post about jobs, advice etc outside of discords etc, I also find it quite good for following journalists and breaking new stories.

TERFCat · 06/11/2024 09:39

Because people are sick of being told what they can and can't say. Populated forums like Reddit no longer allow nuanced discussions that have a variety of opinions; only a left wing view is acceptable, it seems. For example, if I call a man a woman on Reddit, I will likely be banned!

Twitter is the only platform with millions of users where people are free to say what they like.

..and when you leave people free to say what they like they post footage of suicide victims, murders, assaults etc - horrific

Floatlikeafeather2 · 06/11/2024 09:49

I joined Twitter a few years ago because it's where my grandchild's school posts videos of assemblies etc. Then a year or so ago, I found I had been dumped and can no longer access it. I was miffed so I appealed and was told that the decision stands and there will be no further appeals. This is especially weird as I've never once posted on the site! Still it's no loss to me and I would never have signed up at all, left to myself.

FrostFlowers2025 · 06/11/2024 09:53

The reasons people post for sticking with x/twatter is precisely why Trump won.

came off it a couple of months ago as the vitriol wasn't worth the good stuff on there any more. The hate or lies spewed so easily was not something I wamted to have with my breakfast coffee.
People are too unfiltered on social media and their nasty sides are often all that is left. This can't be good for society.
It's a pity as I had build up very interesting selection of journos, scientists amd politicians (of all but the looney sort)

Wtfdude · 06/11/2024 10:09

It can be absolutely hilarious in many ways when you filter out rubbish

Wtfdude · 06/11/2024 10:10

Superiority of some posters today is also quite hilarious.

Twitter introduced some thing where if you didn't post/interact for 6 months (or something) then your account got deactivated.

I like it for the sarcastic humour and memes, but then I don't follow a lot of the politics and shit on there, just general every day stuff.

MumtananoBay · 06/11/2024 10:11

It's literally the only place you can have opinions that don't align with the group think.

You wonder why people say things like "I don't know anyone who voted for trump / Brexit"? It's because of the bullshit on every other social media platform.

Long live X

MermaidEyes · 06/11/2024 10:12

The Gary Barlow son thing has me 🤣 at the moment

Please, please explain this as frankly I'd say the opposite.

LikeARunnerHo · 06/11/2024 10:13

I love the memes and I love Black Twitter. My tl is great!

chipsandpeas · 06/11/2024 10:17

like all social media, the platform isnt the problem its who you follow/friends with etc
unfollow those who you dont agree with and dont click on anything trending you may not like

GatherlyGal · 06/11/2024 10:20

I think twitter is great all in all but yes there are some awful things on there.

Mostly I stick with it because I am passionate about free speech. Also I hate being lectured by people who believe their political views to be not only right but morally and intellectually superior to those of others. Especially where that belief includes a requirement that opposing or different views should not be permitted.
