I mean, seriously, hasn't musk done enough damage for one century? There are so many social media platforms to choose from. So, why stick with x/twatter? The only "free" speech you are going to get there is if you agree with trump-musk

Please, please explain this as frankly I'd say the opposite.

It's because people get their "news" from it

Because people are sick of being told what they can and can't say. Populated forums like Reddit no longer allow nuanced discussions that have a variety of opinions; only a left wing view is acceptable, it seems. For example, if I call a man a woman on Reddit, I will likely be banned!

Twitter is the only platform with millions of users where people are free to say what they like.

Yes, I pointed out a trans man was in fact a woman, on a post. Got banned.

V0xPopuli · 06/11/2024 10:32

Im increasingly disillusioned with all social media.

When it began, it felt like a people led forum, a source of legitimate, interesting & varied information and opinions.

Steadily its become less valuable.
Now it's just an awful mix of constant advertising/influencers, worthless video content designed to be addictive and keep you glued to your phone, and polarised political views, particularly right wing stuff.

I actually hate smart phones more and more with every passing year despite my own scrolling addiction.

You realise there are news channels on and for example with natural disaaters etc the twitter does really provide quite a fast often ahead news via these and via people being there

News breaks on their first.

I tend to not go on it as much any more and it always amazes me that things have been circulating for days before the media gets hold of it.

Like Ed Milliband bring the director of the ‘ independent’ organisation that’s driving his Net Zero money laundering scam.

BobnLen · 06/11/2024 10:36

I use X if I need to complain to companies or find out about things that may affect me in my area, like if the electricity was off, the choice is either that or Facebook which I certainly don't want to use

MermaidEyes · 06/11/2024 10:38

What a bizarre sweeping statement. So every one of us on there gets our news from it. Ok.

Is there a single unbiased accurate source of news now??

TheKeatingFive · 06/11/2024 10:43

I'm on it because I think the stranglehold the left leaning media has on what can be publicly discussed is absolutely shocking. X is the only major counter to that.

I was blissfully unaware, until I had an opinion that wasn't 'acceptable' (ie that gender identity should not trump biological sex and that women's rights matter). Realising that this was not an 'acceptable view' and was being censored has had a huge impact on me.

There's a lot I don't like about X, but being able to question the narratives of those who control what can be talked about is very important.

So do Instagram and TikTok, which are the lesser of the evils right now

No

Instagram is a mess of intrusive ads

also no use for following writers because they don't want to post in pictures

I don't see awful stuff on twitter because I only look at who I'm following

if you know where else to get a clean timeline of history, fiction etc then please tell me

i said I'd come off it after the Eras tour ends but here we are, 9 shows left and the people I follow are still there

they and I have been there ages
we don't do politics, just good stuff

if enough people join blue sky that might work

I don't want videos

SharonEllis · 06/11/2024 11:32

Becsuse its still the best place for some communities & especially for news and journalism if you follow the right people. Also the easiest way to find out what the dickheads are saying.. I am left wing and no fan of musk but threads is awful. I like bluesky but not enough people on it yet.

Me too. Very useful still.

PranklessHarm · 06/11/2024 13:17

and when you leave people free to say what they like they post footage of suicide victims, murders, assaults etc - horrific

It's not that long ago I saw photos of dead children and decapited babies on here, a dead horse with bodies around it laid in the street too and when I queried if the gory photos needed posting, I was told I must be a genocide supporter and then everyone MUST see such images to be able to understand the severity of the issues.

People do not need to see mangled corpses of children to understand the devastation, I didn't take part in conversations because it's really hard to hold a discussion with people who seem unable to comprehend that people can support the same cause but have different views on how to do that, and when they take being asked to not post gore on the thread they choose to go on the attack and be all "no these gory photos are essential for everyone to understand, you must be a bot or a genocide supporter of you disagree with me"

It's such a childish way of thinking, it happens on all ends of the political spectrum and all it does really is create more polarisation, when people are not willing to discuss political issues with anyone who doesn't fully agree with their own perspective, it creates black and white thinking, an idea that one side is the good ones and the other is the bad ones and and anyone who doesn't fully agree with whoever the "good" ones are must be part of "the bad ones"

Personally the far left terrify me as much as far right, not just on x but every social media platform, including MN they make balanced discussions impossible.

Wtfdude · 06/11/2024 13:24

I don't have any dead bodies etc on my twitter feed. People might want to stop clicking on them to not see them on feed?

Only if you do so on a transgender supporting subreddit.

The more right wing subs do exactly the same thing.

I don’t click on them .. they appear in other feed (not tye following one) I’ve just deleted it, so I can’t remember what it’s called.

glad to be out of the cesspit

I never look at that feed so no idea what is in it. I'm not following politics so I imagine it would be suggestions that are relevant to me.

FictionalCharacter · 06/11/2024 13:50

I use it because I follow people who write interesting things, probably quite nerdy stuff to some people. I block accounts that post nasty stuff.

TheKeatingFive · 06/11/2024 15:13

There is some absolutely fantastic content on X btw. It helps to be ruthless about blocking and very careful about who you follow.
