WTF is going on on youtube?

I was watching a documentary about a British scientist, and googled an old Horizon documentary to find out more.
At the top of my search results was a man fighting a bear, live, and slaughtering it on camera. It had hashtags such as 'deathcore', and 'kill to survive'.
I clicked away immediately and reported it, but am possibly being naïve.

Is this standard now? I'm no fucking wallflower but it knocked me utterly sick. I didn't ask for this, nor does my search history inform the algorithm that I would be even interested in this, so why?

Someone will likely have a pop at me for posting this, being AIBU, but I have been aware of ugly shit online for a long time, but this took the goddamn cake.

How to even avoid? I could not have done anything differently.

I think it's a plan to discourage people from using ad blockers and not allowing cookies. The idea being, if you don't allow them to use your data to send you targetted adverts, you won't get relevant results when you search either.

I dread to think what very disturbing content there is on YouTube. I haven't seen anything so bad, but I keep getting an ad for piano lessons from a bloody annoying piano teacher called SteveGrin

@ForeverDelayedEpiphany that site was absolutely rank. I can still remember some of the stuff I saw on it.

Have you tried turning off mature content (can't recall the exact wording) in your YouTube settings OP, it won't stop everything but it will stop a lot. I use the browser and you tap your profile picture and then the cog and it's under that menu somewhere.

Youtube is fucked. I've had people using mouse/rat pest control methods live pop up on my feed.
Kids youtube is total brain rot. Watching other people play video games with inane commentary or 'craft' stuff which is actually just ASMR.
Plus the fact there is fuck all safety when a kid can just click across onto an adult profile from the kid's one. There's no way to put a lock on them.

Have the people getting strange new types of post opted out of cookie tracking?

Yes, I always decline cookies on everything. I remember a thread by a woman recently wondering about her Facebook ads her being told her boyfriend must have been looking at stuff on her phone.

As well as weird ads I've noticed thumbnails of "mainstream" well known companies video ads seem to be deliberately chosen to look sexual.

A popular gymn company had a sponsored video advert appear on my feed a while back and the thumbnail you saw while scrolling was a zoomed in close up on a woman's crotch with her legs wide open lifting weight in gym shorts. If I was into going to the gymn (which I'm not) I'd want clothes that don't show the world the outline and ridges of my minge lips an labias. Or wolf porn fiction ads with very rapey captions. I tap not interested and I still get phases of having them bombarded on me.

And is frustrating when you try and ask if others have noticed and people tell you that you must be already looking at to get those ads. NO. Im a middle aged autistic woman, I look at crafts and cats and Lego. I'm phobic of dogs and would never fantasise about a pack of alpha wolves ravaging me.
