WTF is going on on youtube?

I was watching a documentary about a British scientist, and googled an old Horizon documentary to find out more.
At the top of my search results was a man fighting a bear, live, and slaughtering it on camera. It had hashtags such as 'deathcore', and 'kill to survive'.
I clicked away immediately and reported it, but am possibly being naïve.

Is this standard now? I'm no fucking wallflower but it knocked me utterly sick. I didn't ask for this, nor does my search history inform the algorithm that I would be even interested in this, so why?

Someone will likely have a pop at me for posting this, being AIBU, but I have been aware of ugly shit online for a long time, but this took the goddamn cake.

How to even avoid? I could not have done anything differently.

YouTube algorithms can be weird. There was a lengthy phase where if I searched for crochet videos, in amongst those I would get a random video of an extremely unwell anorexic vlogger, completely unrelated to crochet, and a different video of a terminally ill woman with her 'goodbye' video. Both were very disturbing videos and unrelated to anything I had ever searched for.
Others were also saying this was happening to them when they searched for crochet videos. Go figure.

Yes I got a heap of these. Very healthy looking people announcing that they’re terminal. Absolutely no one I’d ever seen before or watched content of. I don’t know why YouTube would want to pile that on in between my usual make up review videos 🤷

It was a music video. He was wrestling the bear, not fighting, and he didn't slaughter it. It wasn't injured in any way. I think you jumped the gun a bit on this one.

🙄 Yes exactly. He was play fighting. And it’s been shown to lots of people because it was popular.

Garlicpest · 01/11/2024 02:36

Well, it's definitely the search terms though I can't begin to divine why this twit comes up first for Horizon Ivan 1984.

The search from your OP, Horizon 1984: Ivan UK, does at least return Horizon-related stuff.

It's for a music video 🤣 I'm going to see them in December!

violentovulation · 01/11/2024 03:10

I just put that exact search in, and the bear video popped up. Reported it, but fucking hell. I'm assuming the name Ivan has a link to it somehow.

DysonSphere · 01/11/2024 03:13

Thanks to you OP as well my insomnic driven curiosity, I've now watched four Alex Terrible Growl and Bear videos at 3am in the morning🥴

Gingerlingerlonger · 01/11/2024 03:18

I got the same bear video with your search terms. I'm not clicking on it.

I keep getting Eugenia Cooney (the woman with severe anorexia mentioned upthread) videos when I search for some reason. It's been going on a while. The YouTube algorithm also obviously had me pegged as an African American woman for some reason for a while. I'd recently searched wigs and headscarves/bandanas on Amazon (medical reasons) and it happened immediately afterwards. It was actually great though as I got some really excellent suggestions for creators it wouldn't usually show me. I think the YouTube algorithm can sometimes be too limiting. I want new experiences, not the same thing over and over again. I want to hear from people who are not like me. I already know me. I'm boring.

daisychain01 · 01/11/2024 03:34

Can you delete the app and try creating a brand new account to start again. Use a different email address? Maybe a new identity will purge all the nasty stuff (hopefully it won't pick up your ip address.). I've never had anything nasty being suggested in my content and I use YouTube every day,

In a way it's like saying 'ive never been assaulted' so it can't be true!

Yes. Or "It doesn't matter if there are people filming animal abuse to put on YouTube as it doesn't come up on my feed"

marmamumma · 01/11/2024 03:53

According to my 12yo old "restricted mode is worse!" Also perhaps ivan will win a Darwin award one day.

InWalksBarberalla · 01/11/2024 03:55

@Gormenghastly deathcore is a type of music, and this guy in the front man of a Russian deathcore band called Slaughter to Prevail. The bear is not injured.

Areolaborealis · 01/11/2024 03:58

Sorry to hear that you were upset by this. From that search the algorithm probably thinks you're into Deathcore (music) so you might get more recommendations for similar. For videos that you don't want, I'd suggest clicking "not interested", then manipulate the algorithm by spending a bit of time searching and engaging with videos from categories that you would like to watch, eg 'science', 'UK documentaries', or whatever. You don't have to watch the whole thing its just a prompt to guide it to your taste. It'll soon put itself right.

Reserved101 · 01/11/2024 04:01

I'm another who, after reading the OP, spent about 2 minutes googling to confirm it's to do with a Deathcore (music genre) band, called Slaughter to Prevail, and that the video shows someone playfighting with a bear he's seemingly befriended.

It's easy to see why the OP jumped to the wrong conclusion but why not take a second or two to check that you're not massively overreacting?

InWalksBarberalla · 01/11/2024 04:15

Also how did you decide the bear was slaughtered OP?

There is no option to click 'not interested' on a search result

It’s a music video for a deathcore band with Ivan and 1984 in the title somewhere, he wrestles the bear, nothing more.

EVERYONE - THIS IS A MUSIC VIDEO AS POSTED ABOUT 10 TIMES IN THE THREAD!!

RidiculouslyLongUsernamesCausingIssues · 01/11/2024 07:42

“this was as disgusting as rape, to me” followed by some gross descriptors of women and all with regards to a music video that other posters have now searched.

Somewhere, someone with the mental and emotional maturity of a teenage boy is having a laugh.

The recommendations/suggestion videos - its the three dots "not interested". Obviously, if you type something in the search bar its assumed that you are interested in the results of that search.

TwoShades1 · 01/11/2024 11:35

I watch a lot of YouTube and have never seen anything outside the realms of what I’m expecting. Though I don’t really watch anything where YouTube might think I’m interested in killing bears too. Do you tend to watch things that might have caused this? Horror? Serial killer documentaries? I know there is definitely content on there that I don’t want to watch but I’ve not encountered anything unexpectedly.

Attelina · 01/11/2024 11:43

I was looking at crochet patterns on Pinterest one day and was looking at a random persons images of lovely crochet ideas and then she has posted a photo of a teenage girl who has been run over by a car and doubled over in half under the car. A death scene photo that was particularly awful to see at the time as the girl looked a similar age to my daughter at the time.

Sadly, horrible things on the internet can appear at any time.

Years ago on Mumsnet there was a late night troll who posted photos of an alleged dead horse on the floor and a teenage boy grinning whilst holding a wedge hammer! That may have been a staged photo of course but the initial sight of it was horrible.

Attelina · 01/11/2024 11:45

Another one I remember is the Chinese Tiger farm. Don't search for it as it's very upsetting. They deliberately starve tigers. We are used to seeing plump, fluffy tigers who look absolutely majestic. An emancipated skeletal tiger is a terrible sight.

That appeared on my YouTube for no reason.

I've just started getting horrible animal cruelty videos on fb reels, weird bodies and people having sex in swimming pools. I'm hiding them and clicking 'show less', but they keep coming 😩

Same!! It’s so weird, they have just started
