WTF is going on on youtube?

I was watching a documentary about a British scientist, and googled an old Horizon documentary to find out more.
At the top of my search results was a man fighting a bear, live, and slaughtering it on camera. It had hashtags such as 'deathcore', and 'kill to survive'.
I clicked away immediately and reported it, but am possibly being naïve.

Is this standard now? I'm no fucking wallflower but it knocked me utterly sick. I didn't ask for this, nor does my search history inform the algorithm that I would be even interested in this, so why?

Someone will likely have a pop at me for posting this, being AIBU, but I have been aware of ugly shit online for a long time, but this took the goddamn cake.

How to even avoid? I could not have done anything differently.

That's disturbing. Could anyone have been searching for similar content on your device?
There's so much horrible content out there. If it's not actually disturbing then it's weird, garish and ugly, or hyper cute and cloying, or otherwise ridiculously loud and abrasive. Especially videos that start without you ever clicking on them. It puts me off the whole experience of navigating the internet, and especially social media.

purplebeansprouts · 31/10/2024 21:16

I don't get this at all. What have others on your IP address been watching?

iamtheblcksheep · 31/10/2024 21:16

No bear fighting here but I have noticed that apart from the top few videos the search results show you nothing like what you’ve asked for.

Pigeonqueen · 31/10/2024 21:17

I watch a lot of you tube and never have anything like this, ever. Has one of your dc or your dh been watching things on your account?

SoNiceToComeHomeTo · 31/10/2024 21:17

I've never seen anything like that.

Naunet · 31/10/2024 21:18

There’s a lot of animal abuse on YouTube, I love watching nature documentaries, animal rehab, things like that, but YouTube can’t seem to tell the difference between nice or interesting animal content and animal abuse.

Gormenghastly · 31/10/2024 21:18

God no, I live alone and I have a premium subscription, I watch people watercolour painting, japanese otters and old british telly.

I am literally the furthest from this possible, and have never had interests in any of those hashtags or gore content. I haven't watched any horror on there recently and when I do it's more xfiles than snuff!

Surely like in most media they ought to blank a screen on such content to allow the viewer to consent.

I remember at university 25 years ago when I was a naive 18 year old, I was shown a horrible website called Rotten.com

The things on there were pretty stomach churning and fairly gory. Definitely beyond what most people would want to see - images of real life car accidents, suicides, horrible deaths, and all kinds of other unmentionable things totally uncensored. It was pretty hardcore and in retrospect, I probably shouldn't have spent so long gawping at it as a drunk student!

I doubt it would get past the Internet search engines these days, as it wasn't pleasant. But I don't seem to remember anything like the video you mentioned, perhaps I didn't like to dig too deeply!

Gormenghastly · 31/10/2024 21:20

This was the first video in search results for 'Horizon 1984: Ivan UK'

The film was about a man with a disability, relating to the doctor and artist Jonathan Miller's work.

But YouTube is highly censored? Is there someone at home watching that stuff making it come up? I watch a lot of YouTube and have never come across anything bad.

Gormenghastly · 31/10/2024 21:27

No it's just me.
I am very careful. I have seen unrelated crap before, and some unpleasant stuff that made me fume for a few seconds before getting on with my life, but this hurt me.
It's not like you can advise me to grow a thicker skin, this was as disgusting as rape, to me, and we never tell ourselves to grow a thick skin about that, or animal abuse. It really isn't good.

I know the world is in a mess and it sucks, but bloody hell this was one of those things that won't leave your mind. A blocking of screens to ask for consent before seeing stuff like that (if they won't tough up and ban it) wouldn't kill them.

I went into my history and reloaded the page of my search result.
It came up AGAIN but this time third video down from the top.
Here is a screenshot of it, you can see my search bar request at the top.

Something very odd is going on with YT.

I haven't eaten meat since 1984. Yet every single video I watch in relation to veggie food comes with a specific Bavarian high protein meat advert.

It is weird. Every single and on there is completely irrelevant to my life. It's like the opposite of the algorithm.

I usually get loads of property porn, interiors and tiny houses. It is based on my search history, you like looking at tiny houses, here you go here ate 400 more videos of tiny houses.

maybe you looked at otter wrestling and people putting ferrets down their trousers and the algorithm just fed you more of the same but slightly different.

Gormenghastly · 31/10/2024 21:47

I don't use YT much, I tend to watch stuff via Amazon or Netflix mostly.
My most recent searches and interests are meditation sleep vids, yoga with adrienne, cute otter birthday parties and the 1970 series for kids 'Chocky'.

I honestly can't fucking excuse this one.
And even if it WAS my own history that led to it, it doesn't excuse the graphic discomfort that I should have to consent to view.

I've just started getting horrible animal cruelty videos on fb reels, weird bodies and people having sex in swimming pools. I'm hiding them and clicking 'show less', but they keep coming 😩

Gormenghastly · 31/10/2024 21:51

I think the last time something pissed me off was a search for watercolour painting techniques, I'd been mainlining them for a month.
First page of results in a watercolour search brought me women being 'reduced', or bitches taking it whole. I didn't click but WTF?

Suzuki70 · 31/10/2024 21:52

It's something returning as a search in the text for the video, not an algorithm. It came up for me too. The description must contain some of the search terms. I don't want to click to see what.

Gormenghastly · 31/10/2024 21:54

I mean that's the thing isn't it? If this was solely about women being abused?
I have a love-hate relationship with mumsnet, but at the end of the day, I am one of you, and us regulars do have a lot in common, even if we argue a lot Grin

I have seen a LOT of stuff in my search results on YT about men hitting women, about them being demoralised. None of them have any remote relation to my history. I don't watch feminist stuff and I don't search for even tangentially related topics.

Interesting. I have this vague hope that it was staged and not real :(

This keeps happening to me too, im also keeping hiding and see less but it keeps on coming, i really dont get it. My normal viewing is baking and cats and celebrity gossip, nothing like this

Wimberry · 31/10/2024 22:06

I don't think it's anything to do with how you interact with YouTube, there are some sick people out there who will add explicit videos (gore, porn etc) and tag them in ways that they appear on as many people's suggested videos as possible. Not sure how to avoid it though sorry.

Gormenghastly · 31/10/2024 22:12

I also think that popular vids, say with 2million+ views are simply pushed, no matter who you are or what your browsing history.

On a search for modifications to a yoga pose I got mostly women with splayed legs and what you might call camel toe. Nothing remotely similar to the usual yoga videos.

Sadly I think the lowest common denominator prevails.

You Tube shows you similar things to what you have been watching.
I'd be suspicious that others have been watching violent content on your account @Gormenghastly
