To have run the petrol down to 40 miles left

I recently drove 115 miles on a motorway back to London suburbs. I was watching the petrol number the whole way (it gives it in miles left to go before it’s empty) and at 70 I was considering stopping for petrol (lots of places on the motorway and then lots of places in city suburbs on the way to our house). I decided not to stop as baby was asleep and also our older child was keen to get home after a long journey.

we live less than a mile from a big supermarket with a petrol station and also plenty of other places to fill up.

husband had a go at me saying ‘what would I have done if we had run out of petrol / how had I let myself get in that situation’ I said I was fully aware how much was left and I made a decision not to refuel as on balance it was low but not empty.

AIBU??

40 miles is ages away from empty. I filled up on 35 miles yesterday and the light wasn't even on. Your husband is being very silly

AutumnLeaves24 · 21/10/2024 19:32

You have 2 kids & a drivers licence. Why is he acting like you're 10??

Antsinmypantsneedtodance · 21/10/2024 19:32

I've run cars down to --- to empty before and still managed several miles to a petrol station. He's being silly. It used to be very common for me to leave 2 or 3 miles left. Now we have a plug in hybrid its less of an issue.

FirstFallopians · 21/10/2024 19:33

Pffft your DH would be on the edge of his seat if he was with me- I don’t think I’ve filled up without the petrol light being on in about three years.

msmatcha · 21/10/2024 19:34

Jesús wept. If I filled up at 40 miles I'd be feeling very smug indeed and super organised. Zero doesn't mean zero when it comes to a petrol tank and I rely on that fact a lot.

Baby3or · 21/10/2024 19:34

Thanks everyone! I love Aibu

Does your dh often talk to you as if you are a clueless teen?

Hercisback1 · 21/10/2024 19:34

WTF.
I regularly run mine down to 0. Thought it was good for the engine.

Because he’s a controlling dickhead. And the family car is ‘his car’ and he has to find something to have a go at me about every hour or so

DD6 likes to point it out when it gets to 10 miles as she knows her school is 5 miles away 🤣

Scorchio84 · 21/10/2024 19:35

Nor me @FirstFallopians 😆I'm chronic for it

Ah. More going on than the petrol then OP.

Hoplolly · 21/10/2024 19:35

Jeez our car said 7 miles left the other day Blush

SunsetSkylane · 21/10/2024 19:35

I once got to the garage with 3 miles in the tank. Not ideal but so what?

Your husband is being a twat.

luckylavender · 21/10/2024 19:36

We're all different. I'm Team DH!

Ace56 · 21/10/2024 19:36

I only ever fill up when the light comes on! I thought this was normal.

soupfiend · 21/10/2024 19:36

My OH goes mad about this too. I run it right to almost empty, he cant stand it. Obsessed with filling up

Abigaillovesholidays · 21/10/2024 19:36

Haha I've let mine go down to 17 before. 40 is loads!

Thommasina · 21/10/2024 19:36

I took mine into the garage to check the clutch and they rang me and said we can't do the road test because it has no fuel in it 😁

RedRobyn2021 · 21/10/2024 19:37

My car full only has 300 miles in it, so I often only have 40 miles left

Your husband is a dick

Yes.

do you know what? I think he wanted me to fight back or get wound up.

i just replied causally yes i was aware of the miles left of the dial and decided not to fill up as it wasn’t a desperate situation. He left the room in a huff.

id be happy about 1 point to me if I genuinely didn’t want a relationship that was about winning all the time.

posting here on aibu has made me feel better already

I was down to 12 miles last week and that wasn't even a panic! We live about 1 mile from the petrol station and have often made it home with a sleeping baby and less than 20 miles on the guage. If he's so concerned, he can fill it up for you.

I let my car run down to 15 miles then go petrol station usually. Never been a problem for me there's plenty of places to fill up!

Rockandgrohl · 21/10/2024 19:38

God mine is regularly on zero...as a previous poster said 0 doesn't actually mean 0 when it comes to a petrol tank I've done about 8 miles on 0 a few times not run out!
