Not washing hands after using toilet AIBU?

I’ve recently realised my husband isn’t washing his hands after using the toilet. I’ve spoken to him about this several times and he’s been very defensive and doesn’t see anything wrong with this and hasn’t changed his behaviour. AIBU to find this disgusting?

It's grim. I'm so glad my husband is clean.

TheChosenTwo · 11/10/2024 21:21

Oh honestly people not washing their hands after going to the loo is absolutely bloody grim! Yanbu, I’d find it disgusting.

LittleGreenDragons · 11/10/2024 21:25

It is disgusting. Does he wash his hands before going in the fridge or touching communal food? If not then I would seriously contemplate leaving as it's a sign of his utter contempt for the rest of the household.

Bobandbear · 11/10/2024 21:25

So grim isn’t it. It’s absolutely disgusting 🤮 not sure how to get this through to him!

Disgusting. I'd honestly leave. He'd never be allowed to touch me again. How disrespectful.

Sundaymondaytuesdayetc · 11/10/2024 23:48

That is just disgusting.

I thought that despite all the truly negative things about Covid one lasting good thing would be that people were now aware of the necessity of washing hands to help prevent spread of disease.

How has this totally passed your DH by?

Not washing hands after using toilet AIBU?
ahemfem · 12/10/2024 06:27

Why not? Does he enjoy spreading faecal matter around the house?

Thevelvelletes · 12/10/2024 06:32

Hate people who don't wash hands especially supermarket loos , straight out and touching stuff...gads min.

llamalines · 12/10/2024 06:40

The thing is, most men don't wash their hands after the toilet IME. It's disgusting.

I first realised this whole queuing for an event at a favourite venue. The queue was outside and the men's toilet inside, with a frosted window opposite where we were queuing.

The sinks were under the window. We could see the outline shapes of the men as they passed the window and we could see that nearly every single man walked past those taps and didn't stop to wash his hands. The women in our group were shocked. The men weren't.

YANBU, he's being disgusting.

Thevelvelletes · 12/10/2024 06:50

I wash my hands because I'm not a mink and think of others.
Like I said supermarket toilets, the amount of blokes that just waltz out no hand washing turns my stomach.

wulves · 12/10/2024 06:51

My husband once told me that most men don’t wash their hands, based on behaviour he’s seen in public loos. Disgusting cretins!

unsync · 12/10/2024 07:19

Can you anti bac him every time he has been to the loo? That might help the message sink in.

jeaux90 · 12/10/2024 07:29

Minging

Supermarket loos are utter cesspits of depravity

BrainLife · 12/10/2024 07:39

What is his reason for not doing it? I can't think of a good one.

Cheerupmaggi · 12/10/2024 07:57

Plenty of women don't wash their hands too, seen it often in pubs/supermarkets. It's disgusting!

On a night out once asked a well known takeaway locally if I could use their toilet- they let me but there was no soap, filthy little sink, no paper towels/hand dryer. I am guessing nobody must wash their hands there. Awful.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 12/10/2024 08:42

So he touches tge door handles, then you touch them and the germs get passed along. I'd tell him that this is a deal breaker and ask him what he's going to do about it. His decision, your choice.

Ficklebricks · 12/10/2024 08:57

Meh, I can't get upset about this if it was just a wee and not a number 2. It's his own home and presumably if he makes food he would then wash his hands first.

Somebody get the smelling salts as all the Victorian ladies on Mumsnet collectively faint...🙄

Happy to hear that I’m not being unreasonable. I spoke to him last night and said it absolutely turns my stomach. He’s been really defensive and grumpy about being pulled up on it so I have no idea why he thinks it’s ok. Stressed that it’s the whole touching other surfaces with toilet germs on his hands and the risk of making people ill. He said I’m germ
phobic?! I’ve said it’s the absolute basics of hygiene. I’ve asked if he’ll do it to set an example to the kids and because I think it’s utterly gross and it’s a deal breaker for me but he was too stroppy to discuss it by then. So weird as he’s usually pretty reasonable, helps around the house, likes things clean etc. I can hear him emptying the dishwasher and making the kids breakfast, praying he’s washed his hands!!!

Make him do his food hygiene certificate

Blueraccoon · 12/10/2024 09:07

When DS was younger and first going into the gents toilets on his own when out and about I would wait for him at the door. Always knew when he was about to appear as I would hear the hand dryer going on. Nobody else ever used it.

RampantIvy · 12/10/2024 09:13

Show him this thread.

@Ficklebricks you do know how men urinate?
And you are happy that they touch other things afterwards without handwashing?

You presume a person who doesn't wash after using the toilet bothers at any other time? After they've spread toilet germs around the house? What would be the point?

I presume if you wouldn't be bothered by this, that you also don't wash your hands after the toilet. It's disgusting.

I agree. I bet he doesn't wash his hands after handling raw meat either.
