Not washing hands after using toilet AIBU?

I’ve recently realised my husband isn’t washing his hands after using the toilet. I’ve spoken to him about this several times and he’s been very defensive and doesn’t see anything wrong with this and hasn’t changed his behaviour. AIBU to find this disgusting?

Meh, I can't get upset about this if it was just a wee and not a number 2. It's his own home and presumably if he makes food he would then wash his hands first.

Somebody get the smelling salts as all the Victorian ladies on Mumsnet collectively faint...🙄

It’s also that he touches the toilet flush, which is used by everyone else who may have had poo germs on their hands, we have two children. I don’t think he washes his hands before cooking or emptying the dishwasher unless he’s really grubby.

🤮

Disgusting and disrespectful to the people he is living with as his poor hygiene means he is spreading germs around the house.

Honestly OP a grown man should not have to be told to wash his hands after using the toilet....

That would completely put me off him.

Most people do not wash their hands properly, if you remember the Covid ads 20 seconds at least. All the cookery programmes they spend 2 seconds, waste of time and gives a bad impression.

Maggiethecat · 12/10/2024 09:30

I think Ficklebricks is the one I saw come out the restaurant loo, pause briefly at the mirror to check her beautifully made up face and then walk straight out.

It’s not just the men!!

I think it's better to not wash your hands properly, than to not even bother.

I doubt very much he washes his hands before food prep if he doesn't after using the loo.

🤮not good

I'm fairly relaxed about an awful lot of things but that is absolutely revolting. It was drummed into me and DH as children the importance of hand washing and hygiene generally and it's just ingrained in us now.

I'm always astounded how many women don't wash their hands after the loo when we've been on cruises, especially when it's so easy for things like norovirius to spread. I find a lot of places have the foam handwash which makes my hands itch, so I decant my own handwash in a small travel bottle and have always got antibacterial gel.

Going back to the OP's DH, I'd be really having a go at him. He might not mind getting sick through bad hygiene but be damned if he's spreading it around the house.

LittleRedY0shi · 12/10/2024 10:26

All DH's family are like this (though thankfully not DH)! After they visit, we go round wiping the door handles they've touched with disinfectant.

I've also seen my nephew 'helping' SIL prepare a salad, picking his nose at the same time, bogers falling into the bowl. SIL saw, ignored it and served it!

But being in the minority, WE'RE the ones with the problem - germs are good for you, etc...

Mrsredlipstick · 12/10/2024 10:36

Disgusting and it would put me off sex with him. He could be spreading germs into your vagina.
My husband calls these people 'soap dodgers'. He has a large team of male staff and any poor hygiene they will get spoken to by him.

I once had to run a bath for a colleague. We shared a room and she hadn't washed for two days.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 12/10/2024 10:42

There was a thread on here a while ago asking if it was OK to not wash hands after going to the toilet if you’re at home. So many people thought it was fine. I guess if you live alone, never leave the house or have visitors, it doesn’t really matter. Still shocked me though and I don’t have particularly high cleaning standards. Hand washing after using the toilet is a definite though.

Definitely not just men either. Have seen loads of women not bother.

JustAnInnocentQuestion · 12/10/2024 10:54

Number 1 or 2? As if it matters!

CasaBianca · 12/10/2024 10:59

Be graphic « DH, you really think I should be ok with you touching your penis and then touching door knobs, light switches etc that I will touch as well?? » if he doesn’t get it, put your hand down your pants and then ask if he is happy for your to hold his phone.
I’l not joking.
I used the ‘hands down my pants’ once when DH started scratching his package and I asked if we shall start doing that in front of eachother from now on. It worked. Also mentioning that this is not helping your libido, for some reason this argument is always a hit for him.

TomatoSandwiches · 12/10/2024 11:00

My vagina would clamp shut at the thought of him touching me op.

Dirty git.

Lingfield01 · 12/10/2024 11:03

If not washing your hands after visiting the loo was that deadly then we’d all be dropping like flies!! I do wash my hands but I also think we’re all a bit obsessed with hygiene, far more important things to worry about.

About 1.8 million children under the age of 5 die from diarrhoeal diseases and pneumonia. Handwashing with soap could protect 1 in 3 children who get sick from diarrhoea and 1 inn 5 children who get pneumonia.

So children in other countries are 'dropping like flies'. In the UK, I'm assuming the (hopefully) majority of people who do wash their hands are protecting the people that don't bother.

So grim isn’t it. It’s absolutely disgusting 🤮 not sure how to get this through to him!

Don't let him near you for a start!

Or the kids!

I think presumably he doesn't though. Why would you presume that?

Buttercup198 · 18/11/2024 04:58

Absolutely disgusting 🤮 theirs no excuse not to wash hands I would not let him near me your not unreasonable

My dh is thankfully clean and does wash hands

Lostsadandconfused · 18/11/2024 05:18

How could you have married him and had children with him without realising this?

He’s not going to change now, even if he pretends to in order to get you off his back.

People are either hand washers or not hand washers, mainly due to upbringing.

Monday55 · 18/11/2024 06:45

Put a bottle of hand sanitiser next to the hand-wash. A quick squirt of hand sanitiser is better than nothing.

I think it's the time it takes to fuff with hand-wash, finding the hand towel etc.

Happyinarcon · 18/11/2024 06:50

Got to be honest, I just run my hands under the tap. It’s not a proper wash. I don’t pee on my hands though. If my whole family dies of cholera it will be down to me

Chan9eusername · 18/11/2024 06:59

Bear in mind this includes a lot of countries with no good access to clean water.

Everyone has "poo germs" on their skin/body anyway even if they wash their hands carefully. Sorry.

He should wash his hands but i think millions of men don't.

user1471538283 · 18/11/2024 07:07

Oh this is grim. There are so many men and women that don't wash their hands and I don't understand why? Hand washing is the cornerstone of keeping disease away as proved with the pandemic (which also showed how few people bought handwash).

I was taught to and I taught my DS. I couldn't have a man touch me that didn't.
