Topless in gym pool?

liv4321S · 09/10/2024 10:56

I don't know if this is such an obvious question, but men obviously just wear swimming shorts, as a woman, could I be topless? Or would I be asked to leave?

I mean people sexualise boobs but they're there for a purpose... to feed babies. Surely if men can a woman can?

Thank u

You want to feed your baby in a pool?

ComtesseDeSpair · 09/10/2024 10:59

Technically the law refers to indecent exposure and the test is whether there is intent to cause distress or alarm: public nudity in itself isn’t illegal. However, a business can refuse entry or ask you to leave regardless if they consider you improperly dressed, and that’s their prerogative.

Sundaymondaytuesdayetc · 09/10/2024 11:00

You have answered your own question haven't you: if you go topless at your local swimming pool yes you will be sexualised.
It's very sad but even breast feeding is now sexualised in porn, only fans , instagram etc.

ColinOfficeTrolley · 09/10/2024 11:00

If you want to get your tits out in the local gym, go for it. See what happens.

Why not follow this through into all aspects of life where men don't wear tops? Walking round streets in the summer (a thread I could start on it's own!), holidays in family hotels etc.

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 09/10/2024 11:01

I'm a proud badge wearing, bra wearing (or not, up to you) feminist but while I agree, boobs are to feee and not to titillate so you should be able to go topless, I wouldn't because -

Actually, a swim suit in a public pool gives them some support (this could be my age, granted), and

Unfortunately you would be gawped at, society isn't anywhere near ready for baps out at the local David LLoyd and I would be curious as to why it all places you were doing it there.

A beach is a little different (culturally sometimes ok and also more space so you don't feel like you're inches away from a nipple

W0tnow · 09/10/2024 11:01

I suppose you <can>, but why? To make a point? You’d be stared/ogled at. People would be shocked, disapproving, judgemental, and (maybe) admiring, in equal measure.

Of course you could say well what about the beach, etc. and you’d be right. Some societal norms are there for cultural reasons, but they’re there, and when you buck the trend people will let you know about it.

Oh, is men & women being topless the same?
If only the Sun had known that on Page Three…

Comedycook · 09/10/2024 11:02

No one will bat an eyelid op

GladAllOver · 09/10/2024 11:03

Not in a mixed sex pool, too much ogling by the men even when fully covered.

I would in a women only session if only our gym would do them.

Yeah I agree. I was just wondering, I've not done it but was just curious as to if you could

Why not give it a go and let us know how you get on?

Give it a go and then report back

Oh here we go! Another OP with bugger all to do today. Another no story fake thread 🙄

YouveGotAFastCar · 09/10/2024 11:05

No, I don’t think you could. It’s not massively fair, but the law isn’t when it comes to this; either.

Plenty of people get asked to leave the pool when breastfeeding despite that being covered and legally allowed, so I can’t imagine they’d turn a blind eye to you just being topless.

Report back if you give it a go, though!

MaggieBsBoat · 09/10/2024 11:05

Even I as a staunch feminist am not silly (bloody stupid) enough to not recognise that breasts are secondary sexual characteristics on a woman and not a man.

People should be able to choose when they see someone’s sexual characteristics and I’d be bloody irritated having to look at your boobs in a pool when you are there to apparently swim. I’ve breastfed at poolside before but managed to cover myself again before swimming. Try it maybe? It’s this sort of question that makes us look like morons. Seriously.

I've not done it, but if I was just going about my business, they couldn't really do much about it, right? I mean would it be discrimination saying because I'm a woman and have boobs that's I HAVE to wear a bikini top?

You can go to your local gym, supermarket, or cafe completely stark naked with your pubic hair dyed purple, if they’re willing to let you in. Whether they let you is another matter.

Breasts aren't just for feeding

hydriotaphia · 09/10/2024 11:07

Not sure I agree that boobs are "there to feed". Is the "purpose" of our bodies as women to make babies? I'm not sure this is a feminist perspective. Surely they are a secondary sexual feature and an erogenous zone just as much as for feeding babies. Other mammals don't all have "boobs" in the same way as humans (nipples yes obviously but not fatty breasts around them) so the "boob" itself is not actually necessary for feeding babies. Not that their being sexual features means that they should be covered up (I am all for topless breastfeeding) but it is fairly obvious in practice that if you go topless in your gym pool you will be asked to leave.
