Where did it spring from and why isn’t it going away?!

It’s just sugar and salt flavour. Yuck!

My theory is that it’s everywhere because it’s a cheaper flavour to make than cocoa or vanilla for example.

But regardless of why, it’s mank. Aibu?!

YABU. Salty and sweet together, delicious. See also alternating crisps and chocolate buttons.

Didimum · 21/09/2024 22:20

I love it. Also love salty sweet popcorn and sea salt dark chocolate. Popular things tend to stick around, OP, so there’s you’re answer.

merryandbrightdelight · 21/09/2024 22:21

Yes I agree! I totally think we are in the minority though OP, but I don't like it at all!

Wallawallakoala · 21/09/2024 22:21

It’s horrible!! Just doesn’t work for me!

hoarahloux · 21/09/2024 22:25

No I love it. Caramel isn't just sugar flavour, it's deeper than that. Add salt and it's perfect.

Salty sweet popcorn! I can never get a big bucket with my partner at the cinema because he just doesn't get it! It's a bucket of sweet for him and a sweet and salty for me. Absolute perfection.

TheGirlattheBack · 21/09/2024 22:27

Nope. Lovely sweet caramel and then 🤢 salt. Just why would you do that??

glittercunt · 21/09/2024 22:28

Can't stand salt. Hate salted caramel. It feels wrong too.

Sunplanner · 21/09/2024 22:29

Where did it spring from? Brittany I think, they had salted caramel sweets, salted caramel sauce and butter biscuits years before the food industry took it up.

Scoobydoobywho · 21/09/2024 22:29

I used to hate it until I tried a salted caramel milkshake, which is delicious.

thistimelastweek · 21/09/2024 22:30

It's the work of the devil.

I want yummy unpolluted caramel!

alarmallamaduck · 21/09/2024 22:31

Voting currently suggest there are more salted caramel fans out there than not. Heathens!

This post was mainly inspired by a longing for actual proper caramel flavoured stuff. I like caramel. I don’t want salt in it. You can barely find any ‘plain’ caramel any more ☹️

Yes! 🙌 My feelings precisely.

I love it, especially in ice cream form

Barleysugar86 · 21/09/2024 22:33

I quite like it for one mouthful, like in a box of chocolates, but when my boss gave me a fancy salted caramel easter egg it was disgusting, so sickly to have in any quantity.

poetryandwine · 21/09/2024 22:34

YANBU, OP.

The only people I know who like salted caramel are British - not all Brits, obviously.

I am fine with ordinary caramel, I love a bit of sea salt on my dark chocolate, but I am with you on this.

MrsToddsShortcut · 21/09/2024 22:39

YANBU.

If I decide to eat something caramel flavoured, it's because I want to eat something sweet. I don't need a glob of salt dumped in it ('to take the edge off the sweetness' as a friend once explained it).

I do not want 'the edge taken off the sweetness' - the sweetness is the point!

It's horrible, it's an abomination, and it cannot fall out of vogue quickly enough, as far as I'm concerned (along with this weird assumption that all women love Prosecco and peculiar flavoured gin).

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 21/09/2024 22:41

I don't like caramel, but I like other sweet and salty combos like chocolate pretzels, and jam and peanut butter.

CoastalCalm · 21/09/2024 22:43

Honey and salt is better

Yuckyyuckyuckity · 21/09/2024 22:44

I'm not a fan of salted caramel in a chocolate bar as it's usually way too sickly sweet, but I love it as an ice cream flavour. I do love sweet and salty together generally though. Popcorn, sea salt on dark chocolate. Honey on halloumi is my latest obsession!

GCAcademic · 21/09/2024 22:46

I can’t stand it (but never liked caramel anyway) and hate that it’s everywhere. I went to a restaurant recently where three of the deserts featured it.

I thought it would be a short-lived fad but it’s been going on for years now, so I guess we’re stuck with it.

Talipesmum · 21/09/2024 22:47

It’s just butterscotch, rebranded. It sneaked in and stole butterscotch from us. Butterscotch was that very slightly salty caramel flavour, as butter has a bit of salt in it. And now it’s all “salted caramel”.

Oh interesting. I have honey on greek yoghurt - should I add a bit of salt?
