Salted Caramel gross. AIBU?

Where did it spring from and why isn’t it going away?!

It’s just sugar and salt flavour. Yuck!

My theory is that it’s everywhere because it’s a cheaper flavour to make than cocoa or vanilla for example.

But regardless of why, it’s mank. Aibu?!

Honey and halloumi is a match made in heaven

sarahzbaker · 21/09/2024 22:55

The salt - not too much - balances the flavours.
Maybe the balance has been wrong for you

SweatySpaghetti · 21/09/2024 22:56

Yeah I can’t stand the stuff, but my dm loves it!
I usually like the combination of sweet and salty but I just can’t get onboard with salted caramel.

Although to be fair I don’t really like plain caramel too much either.

Honey and salt is better

Yuck! Honey is disgusting

Yuck! Honey is disgusting

It is, and now that pulled pork is no longer ubiquitous as it was a few years ago, everything is being drizzled with honey.

I like a bit of salted caramel, but I agree you can have too much of a good thing.

TheHangingGardensOfBasildon · 21/09/2024 23:15

YANBU, OP - it's grim.

I love salt and I love caramel, but not together; same as I love strawberries and I love gravy, but I don't mix them together into a smoothie.

The ubiquity of it is weird, imho. I wouldn't mind if it was just one option for the sorts who like it, but you rarely get regular caramel available now, unsullied by salt - the same as vegetarians increasingly find that vegan is the default 'non meat-eater' option and they're expected to just love it regardless.

MazeRunner · 21/09/2024 23:31

Whaaattt! Salted caramel is one of my favourites. The combo works extremely well imho.
It’s also my ice cream flavour of choice.

SkaneTos · 21/09/2024 23:39

I, too, dislike salted caramel.

I also dislike chocolate with salt flakes in it/on it.

(I know that a pinch of salt is a good ingredient in many chocolate desserts. That is not what I'm talking about. That's OK. But I don't like BIG SALT FLAKES in a chocolate bar.)

hmb255 · 21/09/2024 23:40

Totally agree OP. It's disgusting and it seems to be in everything, I just don't get it!

Messen · 21/09/2024 23:45

It depends.

Commercial salted caramel anything is generally horrible. Ice cream in particular.

Jude’s ice cream (NOT the vegan one) is acceptable. Walls and Carte D’or is neither salty or caramel, it is toffee.
Salted Caramel is actually a very traditional flavour. Bonfire toffee has salt in it if you make it right. Choc and salt is a winning combo to my mind.

Nogaxeh · 21/09/2024 23:48

When I had a colonoscopy I had to drink these disgusting salt solutions to clean out my colon, and the problem I have with salted caramel is that so much of it is simply too salty, and reminds me of something like that, rather than being subtle.

YaCannyKickYaGrannyInTheShin · 21/09/2024 23:49

YANBU it's disgusting 🤮

AppleDumplingWithCustard · 21/09/2024 23:52

I hate it and the way it seems to have infiltrated so many foods.

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 21/09/2024 23:57

It’s my favourite flavour. I had no idea it was controversial as well. I get enough hate for loving pineapple on pizza.

MrsTerryPratchett · 22/09/2024 00:00

Salt good.

Sugar good.

Salt and sugar not good.

I swear it comes from the North American theory that more of whatever is good must be better. No. Subtlety and balance is good. A tiny amount of salt in sweets is fine. Tons of it is rank.

I don't think it's controversial, beacuse so many people seem to love it!

Well deserved hate! 😬😁

Autumnweddingguest · 22/09/2024 00:06

YANBU. I hate it. Really hate it. It's one of the few things I want to spit out if I accidentally taste it. Sugar and salt clash horribly. I hate Hobnobs too for the same reason. And chocolate with flakes of seasalt in it.

Sameshitdifferentdayx · 22/09/2024 00:09

Agree with you OP, I cannot stand it 🤢 DP loves it!

And @Strawberrycheesecake7 I agree with you, pineapple on pizza is BEAUTIFUL 😍

Stichintime · 22/09/2024 00:16

I don't think I've had it, apart from a sad yoghurt. Caramel, toffee, fudge etc should not be messed with. The demise of Caramac is a disgrace and people eating salted this and flavoured that have caused the destruction of the good stuff. I've now added nougat to my list.

Bonjovispjs · 22/09/2024 00:39

It's vile and I'm so annoyed that so many places do desserts with salted caramel, but you can't get anything with normal caramel, at least give us the choice.

Itisjustmyopinion · 22/09/2024 01:36

alarmallamaduck · 21/09/2024 22:31

Voting currently suggest there are more salted caramel fans out there than not. Heathens!

This post was mainly inspired by a longing for actual proper caramel flavoured stuff. I like caramel. I don’t want salt in it. You can barely find any ‘plain’ caramel any more ☹️

This! I just want normal caramel flavoured things but there is less and less now. I don’t even like to taste salt in my savoury food so definitely wouldn’t want to taste it in sweet food

Anotherparkingthread · 22/09/2024 01:36

I hate it too. It's revolting and has taken the place of perfectly good desserts. It's cheap, it tastes cheap and it's cheap to make. Which is why they haven't got rid of it.

Butterscotch needs to come back though.

SweatySpaghetti · 22/09/2024 01:43

@Anotherparkingthread Completely agree- and I love butterscotch!
