Would you drink olive oil to start labour?

I'm overdue and booked in for induction tomorrow but would prefer things to start naturally.
A friend has advised me to drink olive oil to get things started, I'm not so sure if it's a good idea.
I don't want to be sick or anything.
Would you?

No.

Try orgasm? Weird I know, but oxytocin and all that. Surely better than diahorea

ILikeToBeQuiet · 19/09/2024 12:06

Olive oil will just soften your stools..

romdowa · 19/09/2024 12:06

No I wouldn't olive oil and castor oil are very very dangerous to drink in pregnancy.

ButtSurgery · 19/09/2024 12:07

Absolute bollocks.

It'll help you shit yourself though.

OldTinHat · 19/09/2024 12:07

God, no!

Twiddle your nipples and dance a lot. That should get you going!

Ugh do not do this!

ILikeToBeQuiet · 19/09/2024 12:08

Olive oil isnt dangerous in pregnancy to the person who said it was 🙄

Cardamomandlemons · 19/09/2024 12:08

I had a friend who did that, and everything came out except the baby.
The only way to get the baby out is the same way it got in...

lululu16 · 19/09/2024 12:09

Relax, have a glass of wine, go for a romantic date at the cinema & binge watch series that make you laugh a lot :)
It will happen
You are welcome to cancel the induction to take the pressure off in the meantime - it's your choice x

Hoppinggreen · 19/09/2024 12:09

I am not a Doctor but I am not sure how olive oil in your stomach could affect your uterus.
It will make you feel pretty sick though

Wtf?
How do women who live in the Med cope?

bazoom · 19/09/2024 12:11

Someone once said a hot Indian works.
Although not sure how the midwives like that idea.
It'll come when its ready and not before! all the best

Rlt8990 · 19/09/2024 12:11

As someone who has gone to the far end of overdue In all pregnancies, pretty much nothing works for everyone. Some people will have anecdotes of what works for them but there are those of us that none of these tips work. Tbh the best thing you can do is turn off your phone and try and enjoy a bit of peace and quiet. It is the longest period of time ever being overdue and can be quite stressful which never helps

Well they probably have olive oil on their food rather than just drink it but I take your point

ForZippyJadeEagle · 19/09/2024 12:14

It wouldn't start labour so no.

Spenditlikebeckham · 19/09/2024 12:15

The old wife's tale is castor oil. Which is definitely not recommended these days. Remember in Those Days dc were put to sleep on their front and look at the stats to see how good that went...
Sex with both of you having an orgasm..
My favourite is vaccuming at the first sign of a twinge. Got me going several times..

BabyOwlinthePlumeria · 19/09/2024 12:16

Nipple stimulation and hand expressing colostrum is all I know that's not anecdotal. The release of oxytocin is said to stimulate contractions

AgainandagainandagainSS · 19/09/2024 12:17

Just no OP. It will come when it wants to. You are going to feel bad enough in labour without an upset stomach to content with.

mummaof5nannyto1 · 19/09/2024 12:17

No definitely don't drink olive oil! My sister did this and was very poorly , I know it's frustrating but baby will come when they are ready . 4 of mine were overdue ! And nothing worked

WetBandits · 19/09/2024 12:18

Go and have a shag (and make sure you orgasm!)

All olive oil will do is make you shit yourself.

needabiggerbag · 19/09/2024 12:19

Well I think I got my answer!
I will wait it out, maybe try the sex as there's nothing to lose.
Thanks for making me see sense.

I mean if you want to have oily diarrhoea all over the delivery table go ahead. Otherwise I'd give it a miss.

SlipperyLizard · 19/09/2024 12:20

If any of these home remedies worked to induce labour (rather than being anecdotes about what some women coincidentally did before going into labour), don’t you think midwives would use them?

There's no harm in tweaking your nipples, eating pineapple or a hot curry, but if your labour starts afterwards it is not “proof” that they are effective.

My obstetrician specifically instructed me to have as much sex as possible from 37 weeks for this purpose Grin
