Would you drink olive oil to start labour?

I'm overdue and booked in for induction tomorrow but would prefer things to start naturally.
A friend has advised me to drink olive oil to get things started, I'm not so sure if it's a good idea.
I don't want to be sick or anything.
Would you?

Olive oil is not dangerous in pregnancy!!!

Incidentally- you don't have to consent to an induction.

It will give you the shits

Mid 1970s (in Maternity Hospital) Mums were given OBE Oil, Bath and Enema!!!!

My Mum always used to recount her stories of being shaved down like a mole rat, given a big soapy enema, then left to lie of 2 planks over an old bath, completely naked! Early 1960's but it put the fear of god into me 😭😂

It will happens when it happens. Sorry I know it isn't what you want to hear but nothing will make baby suddenly lie in the correct position to start labour, you've just got to bear with. An inflatable ball is however very comfy

SweatySpaghetti · 19/09/2024 21:03

No don’t do that!

try curb walking (one foot up on the curb and one on the lower road) - google it! It’s the one thing I feel like actually helps.

apart from that, eat a hot curry, have sex and stimulate your nipples. They may not work but at least they’re not actively harmful like I imagine drinking olive oil would be.

Killerqueenie · 19/09/2024 21:24

When I was trying to kick start my labour, I had sex then straight after I hand expressed some colostrum. Within an hour, I was having contractions, and a few hours later, my waters broke.

Balloonhearts · 19/09/2024 21:33

Plan to do something really fun tomorrow possibly with a non refundable deposit. That'll move things along.

wineandsunshine · 19/09/2024 21:43

22 years ago, my mum (birthing partner) put castor oil in my tea when I was overdue. I had no idea, she then buggared off for a night to see family and missed the whole birth 🤣

I also tried fresh pineapple with my second (a whole one) 🤣 and he was born two hours later!!!

Ketzele · 19/09/2024 21:45

Don't do it! And don't eat a hot curry either - the thinking behind both is the same. Honestly, there is no reliable evidence-based way to encourage an earlier labour at home, though orgasm or nipple-twiddling are at least harmless.

Gingernaut · 19/09/2024 21:45

It'll give you the shits

bakewellbride · 19/09/2024 21:50

No don't do that!

Pack the olive oil In your hospital bag instead. If you get the chance rub some on baby's bum before the first poo. It makes the first nappy change SO much easier, none of the horribly tar like stickiness you hear of, it just slides straight off.

veritasverity · 19/09/2024 22:18

Ooof no yuk! Just tell your baby you're ready to meet him/her, and you want him / her to get those delivery hormones going!

Tumbleweed101 · 19/09/2024 22:20

Raspberry leaf tea or capsules.

HaveSomeIntrospect · 19/09/2024 22:23

Definitely not olive oil.

nipple and clitoral stimulation should get you going

HelloMyNameIsElderSmurf · 19/09/2024 22:28

I've told this story before on here, but we went to our local Indian where they all knew us and I ordered a really hot curry, hotter than I normally would. The waiters were like 'Why are you doing this ElderSmurf, you don't like your food that hot?'

When I explained it was to induce labour they gave me a pitying glance and asked me if I thought women in India never went over their due date, or maybe all babies in India were premature.

Suitably shamefaced I carried on with my disgustingly hot curry which I couldn't eat, and had a lassi for dessert.

I was a full 5 days before induction started and then DS was born 3 days later.

Candyfluffs · 19/09/2024 22:31

Having sex is a good way to get things started

Makingchocolatecake · 19/09/2024 22:43

Errrrrrr never heard of that and wouldn't want to try.

I've heard pineapple can help, and it's tasty so why not?

Cece92 · 19/09/2024 22:58

I wouldn't advise on the oil lol!

Get your man to rub your clit and suck the Nips as the same time. Have you had a sweep? If your due one once you've had it then get him to do it.

Good luck I was 2 weeks overdue when my DD came xxxx

Cerealkiller4U · 19/09/2024 12:21

Nope

its actually quite dangerous to drink any type of oil because it can cause the baby to poop inside of you. Wouldn’t risk it

What?? Sorry but.. 😂😂
This is insane! But thanks! 😅
