Would you drink olive oil to start labour?

I'm overdue and booked in for induction tomorrow but would prefer things to start naturally.
A friend has advised me to drink olive oil to get things started, I'm not so sure if it's a good idea.
I don't want to be sick or anything.
Would you?

Nope

its actually quite dangerous to drink any type of oil because it can cause the baby to poop inside of you. Wouldn’t risk it

offyoujollywelltrot · 19/09/2024 12:21

Jesus Christ do people still actually believe crap like this?

Pookerrod · 19/09/2024 12:22

God this takes me back! I was booked in for an induction that I desperately didn’t want on a Monday morning. On the Friday before I decided that come hell or high water I was going to have this baby over the weekend. I did a lot of research and this is what I did:

  • Rose hip tea - drank it by the bucket load
  • pineapple - ate so much pineapple that weekend that 15 years later, I still can’t even look at one now
  • Hot Indian curry on the Saturday night
  • Several hot baths
  • lots and lots of sex. I was as massive and uncomfortable as a beached whale and I really did want it (my DH also really didn’t want it but) but sometimes you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do.

I have no idea if any of the above made a difference but first thing on the Sunday morning I had my first contraction and was holding my baby by lunchtime!

Good luck xx

Wtf?
How do women who live in the Med cope?

Well I doubt they drink olive oil when pregnant do they?

I imagine they use it a lot. But drinking a bottle when you’re heavily pregnant? I’d say the same to them too

Threewheeler1 · 19/09/2024 12:24

I was hanging the washing out.
Try that.
Or you could use the ancient method of shouting 'banana' six times followed by six forward rolls.
Hope you're not as big as I was, 12 days overdue with DS2. No way I could even get my socks on, let alone perform gymnastics.

Should say I really didn’t want it!

I've heard holding a newborn can set you off , if you know anyone whose recently given birth you could visit. I mowed the lawn to get me going

Discombobulated2024 · 19/09/2024 12:30

It’s castor oil which used to be suggested to induce labour and, contrary to what previous posters have said, castor oil does have properties which stimulate evacuation. However, this normally means the bowels and stomach and is therefore not recommended nowadays.

I have never heard of olive oil being used for induction and I can’t imagine how it would work.

elderflowerspritzer · 19/09/2024 12:34

I'm intrigued about the thinking behind the idea that olive oil could induce labour 😂

Is it meant to lubricate you or something??

You do know that your uterus/ cervix and your stomach are different parts of your body right?

If you drink olive oil it will go through your digestive system, it won't go anywhere near the baby, certainly won't be helping them slide out!😂

Jjiillkkf · 19/09/2024 12:06

No.

Try orgasm? Weird I know, but oxytocin and all that. Surely better than diahorea

Was going to say this - my friend is convinced she brought Labour on twice by orgasming

DillDanding · 19/09/2024 12:48

No - why risk making yourself sick when you need to be strong for labour?

Sex is proven to help. Have orgasms, let semen stay inside and bathe your cervix (the prostaglandins help ripen it) and get your husband to stimulate your nipples by sucking or twiddling.

Andarna · 19/09/2024 12:57

If it were that easy then the hospitals wouldn't give uou strong medicin to kickstart labour. The stories where it works are just anecdotal. These women would have started labour. Plenty of us were induced in hospitals for days before it worked. It's not easy but it will come out some day, I promiss!

Bubbleplumb · 19/09/2024 13:00

I tried a lot of things each time I was overdue. Pineapples just gave me horrendous heartburn, same with a hot curry. I tried raspberry leaf tea but no. The only thing that worked was an orgasm, literally my waters broke about an hour after and I had given birth a few hours later. Good luck.

autienotnaughty · 19/09/2024 13:09

Raspberry leaf tea
Sex
Walking
Spicy curry
Sitting /moving on a yoga ball

Or just plan something nice to do and you can guarantee baby will disrupt things!

DramaAlpaca · 19/09/2024 13:11

I'm enjoying all the funny comments on here Grin
The only thing I can add is drinking lots of raspberry leaf tea as 'apparently' it stimulates the uterus. You're not supposed to drink it before 37 weeks for this reason.

I've no idea whether or not it works, but anything safe is worth a try I guess.

recurringcovid · 19/09/2024 13:13

I had fish and chips the day I went into labour - you don’t want anything oily or greasy in your stomach when you give birth - trust me..,

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂 very good.

I also now have a image of the doc / midwife standing about 10 foot away from @needabiggerbag , with a pair of baseball catchers gloves on ready to catch a very fast moving slippy baby

AmyFarrahFowler1 · 19/09/2024 13:25

My husband wouldn’t have sex with me at that point 😔 I think it freaked him out 😂

CutthroatDruTheViolent · 19/09/2024 13:54

No because I would be sick.

I would (and did) try pineapple, raspberry leaf tea, curry, sex.

Nothing worked. DTs came after induction and DS3 on his due date.
