To ask which country you would not visit again and why?

I love hearing about travel experiences and am interested in knowing about places you have visited that you wouldn't go back to.

AIBU to ask which country you'd avoid in the future and what specifically made your experience less enjoyable? Was it due to culture, safety, or something else?

Yes but why wouldn’t someone expect most responses to come from a Western point of view when it’s a UK site?

Would they expect a chat forum in China say to not have any particular bias?

I thought travel broadens the mind, so a thread composed of people who have travelled might also be one which considers other perspectives than their own.

Mairitius- really boring, just all inclusive resort. Not worth the 12 hour plane or a weeks leave

Crikeyalmighty · 16/09/2024 19:23

@thestudio very true. I do enjoy the US but very very specific areas and places.one thing I have found in the US with service in general is that it's either in your face niceness and very full on ( think Disney) or surly and rude- can't give a shit- have found suprisingly little of the kind of pleasant but brisk competency that you get in say Sweden or Germany or even sometimes inUK . Same with meals- I've had truly fab ; (particularly but not exclusively in California, Chicago and New York ) or pretty awful cheap processed shit - far harder to get a good middle level meal in many areas

Have been to Wales once but don’t really wish to return, it holds no attraction for me. The food and weather are blergh and there is better scenery elsewhere.

Sorry you didn't like the food, I believe there is a Burger King in the service station near the Severn Bridge, best stock up before you continue along the M4.

Yugoslavia hasn't existed since 1992.

It's now seven different countries

So? When I visited, it was still Yugoslavia. 1989.

DecafDodger · 16/09/2024 19:27

Will never return to Africa or any majority Muslim country. Not pleasant, not safe.

Africa is a continent not a country. A continent comprised of 54 very different countries. Have you visited all of them?

JHound · 16/09/2024 19:35

WinnyMoms · 16/09/2024 03:42

Dubai
Hong Kong
Anywhere on the African continent
Yugoslavia
Any of the Southern US states (Virginia, West Virginia, Georgia, Texas, etc)

Have you been to all 54 African countries?
And Yugoslavia does not exist.
I have not been to all US southern states but what was wrong with Virginia and Texas?

Crikeyalmighty · 16/09/2024 19:44

@Thebaguette - I reckon Israel or Switzerland or Singapore

The first time I went to Florence was in February and it was not too cold, didn't rain, and was lovely and quiet. It was magical.

I went back at a more conventional tourist time of year, and as soon as I paused to look at the basilica, was hassled by a Roma beggar who would NOT go away. He was going to stand in front of me and hold his hand out until I gave him money or one of us died of old age. I wasn't going to hand over any cash because I could see several others in the vicinity and thought I would be swamped.

I've had similar experiences in Paris and this sort of thing would make even the most bleeding-heart liberal yearn for just a tiny bit of dictatorship, enough to make people stop provoking you when all you've done is stopped to look at the view.

With me it was more that we felt unwelcome. Of course most people were lovely but some were really rude , perhaps understandably fed up of tourists, so we won’t go back and bother them again.

Hopefully the buns will get all soggy in the "bleurgh" weather on the getaaway from the "bleurgh" scenery back to civilization.
As a proud valley's dweller all the anti Wales stuff is quite upsetting.

If it was the other way around and I was slagging off all the times i've been abused in cities around England I wonder what would be said?

Nobody is slagging off though. They're just giving their honest opinions based off events that happened to them! If you've had bad experiences in England, ok. If they've had bad experiences in Wales, ok. 🤷‍♀️

That particular poster had no complaint other than the food weather and scenery being "bleurgh" and having no wish to return. And i'm not listing the multiple incidents that have happened to me in England because despite having a shit time in multiple places I realise the whole country is not to blame and I will actually return.

Crikeyalmighty · 16/09/2024 19:58

@drspouse we've been many times- stay in west Hollywood at the Montrose ( love it) go to Mel's, the Roxy, drive round Beverley hills nosing at houses, pop to Laurel canyon stores and studio city, pop to the Grove ( love the food hall) drive to the Westfield in Beverley hills, Santa Monica, Venice. Always had a great time - my H often has a few meetings , so when he does I just sit on rooftop with pool or pop to the grove - I guess it's one of those places you need to find your 'you' it's not really just a 'meander around' kind of place

Try not to take it to heart too much, it’s just one person’s opinions. I know someone whose favourite place in the world to visit is North Wales. She’s even learning Welsh.

Food and weather can play a big part in holidays/visits for some!?
Each to their own isn't it.

Thank you I will try. That's sweet, how is she getting on with thw Welsh? I dabble, but it's really hard!
I know people from California who come here on holiday and that is nuts to me!

Rome felt dirty and a lot of dodgy people on the buses felt I was getting watched ready to be mugged

The food isn't "bleurgh" though, I mean the weather is kind of "bleurgh" so that is valid😂.

Absolutely hated Dubai for all the reasons people have listed above. Utterly soulless, morally bankrupt and craven. Egypt was also horrible. The sights of Luxor, Cairo and all down the Nile were breathtaking. Genuinely even better than I could have imagined, but the constant harassment and attempted groping from men was disgusting and ruined the whole trip - and I was barely a teenager! Same with other middle-eastern and North African countries I have visited. India also was horrific for how genuinely unsafe I felt and the never-ending sexual harassment and staring. Feel utterly sorry for Indian women who have to put up with this shit and constant rape and violence every day.

There seems to be a single common theme in this thread of why most people don’t like a country they’ve visited. Agree with a PP about how nice it would be to invent a women-only country!

fantastick · 16/09/2024 20:06

The Dominican Republic.
It felt like a prison -no way of leaving the resort or even walking too far on the beach. Men with machine guns on every exit.
Food was shocking - same cocktail sausages reheated every meal then resurfacing at breakfast the next day..
Another vote for Marrakesh - can speak the language so felt I may not be so badly scammed. It wasn't the case.
