To ask which country you would not visit again and why?

I love hearing about travel experiences and am interested in knowing about places you have visited that you wouldn't go back to.

AIBU to ask which country you'd avoid in the future and what specifically made your experience less enjoyable? Was it due to culture, safety, or something else?

The food isn't "bleurgh" though, I mean the weather is kind of "bleurgh" so that is valid😂.

No I agree, it's not. Not at all different from our food, I don't think really?! Lol.
BUT.
Welsh cakes my absolute favourite!! 😍
I have been to Wales once, found a few people quite rude - maybe it was the English accent 😂 but nothing too bad that I would say I wouldn't ever visit again.

Why do western women, who are used to equality and are treated with dignity alongside their male counterparts - choose voluntarily to go to the Middle East and North African countries? Just why?

Don't put yourself through it. They don't have the same politics, values or culture and they are known for being misogynistic to the core. There are lovely places in the world to go to, where you won't be mindlessly and aggressively groped, manhandled, scared shitless in taxis and spat at. Just.Not.Worth.It.

The Middle East and North Africa is a fascinating area with amazing history and stunning scenery?

Plus there is great variety. Oman, Dubai and Israel for example are radically different. Also, I personally experienced almost no harassment in Oman, Dubai, Israel, Egypt, Turkey, Palestine or Cyprus. Maybe I'm really ugly or something but not every woman will experience harassment.

The Middle East is my favourite area to travel, it's so so sad it's so unstable as I know people who said Iran, Syria and Yemen were the best places they'd ever been.

HelpMebeok · 16/09/2024 20:12

South Africa because of the extreme violence .
Dubai because of the culture.

Tunisia because of the terrorism threats

@Racheltension1

My husband’s dream is to go to Vegas. I’ve never been but I am pretty certain there’s nothing about it I would like - sensory overload and in all the wrong ways. Don’t like gambling, or the blatant drugs/poverty apparently that you see on the streets. I hear it’s got a very disturbing side underneath all the glitz and glamour. All artificial. He thinks it would be wonderful - he can go on his own (I reckon he’d have burnout after 24 hrs)

No thanks!

I agree with you, I’ve been and it’s everything you imagine, but not even slightly glitzy or glamorous whatsoever. It’s like an American Blackpool, and full of overpriced bars & restaurants in shopping centres.

I found it very superficial and couldn’t see the appeal, it had no soul.

Papyrophile · 16/09/2024 20:15

I will never go back to Bali. Didn't dislike Ubud or Gili Air but not keen on the resorts.

Try not to take it to heart too much, it’s just one person’s opinions. I know someone whose favourite place in the world to visit is North Wales. She’s even learning Welsh.

I have a friend in Germany who's learning Welsh - I asked her if her retirement plan was to go to Patagonia :)

No it's not so different at all, welsh cakes are slamming😋. Then there's cawl, cockles, laverbread, barabrith, welsh rarebit, glamorgan sausage and aberffraw biscuits off the top of my head.
Where did you come to in Wales? Please give us another chance😁, i'm sorry people were rude to you.

Papyrophile · 16/09/2024 20:17

But I have really enjoyed Dubai, but I was there as my sister's guest. I love the city's can do energy and the relentless pace of change.

Hopefully the buns will get all soggy in the "bleurgh" weather on the getaaway from the "bleurgh" scenery back to civilization.
As a proud valley's dweller all the anti Wales stuff is quite upsetting.

If it was the other way around and I was slagging off all the times i've been abused in cities around England I wonder what would be said?

Have holidayed in Wales, north, mid and south, many many times and love it. Amazing scenery, love the outdoors and the beaches, and have had some amazing food, and have never been yelled at by a Welsh person. I’ve been polite, people are polite back.

mids2019 · 16/09/2024 20:19

I wonder if your experience of harassment in North Africa and the middle east is religion dependent

If a Muslim woman were to visit Egypt to see relatives for instance and wore traditional Islamic dress it may be she is unlikely to be harassed. The harassment may be aimed towards obviously westernised white women.

I know of Muslim women who thought Mecca fantastic

I'm glad you have had good experiences around Wales, it really is a great country!

??

I asked if you had been to all African countries. How is that materially different to “anywhere on the African continent”?

It’s just weird to respond with a continent when the question was about countries.

Why so aggressive at questions?

Everywhere has their 'bad' places and experiences. I've been to the US several times. Some places were awesome, some places I'd never go again. Sometimes the awesome and awful happened in same city.

Notable:
Downtown memphis for work. Dear God. Police on every corner. Store had massive guns behind counter, looked like it had been shot up recently. I asked the hotel reception where to go for dinner, they said not out of sight of the doorman. Saw a car getting broken into on the very short walk to restaurant 2 doors down. Restaurant door staff gave me a full on interview before allowing me access.
San Francisco. 100% sure I saw a very large drug exchange on the street. But also had a lovely tour around Alcatraz with some very pleasant Amish people. Cycled over golden gate bridge, made friends with some other solo travellers.

We have done several road trips in the US, we love it there but I felt really uneasy in Memphis. The police sirens seem to be constant and we didn't see anything dodgy, but couldn't wait to get away from there.

Fortunately we were only there one night on a stopover.

There is a certain amount of irony in this post.

@InWalksBarberalla

England. The countryside is quite pretty and the historical sites are interesting. But it's just so grey and grimy and the people are miserable.

We like to be miserable - particularly about the weather. It's a cultural thing. At least you won't get stoned here for not wearing a head-covering if you're a woman, and our laws advocate fairness, gender equality and respect in line with human rights legislation. But each to their own.

Weird response. This thread asked which country you have visited but wouldn't visited again. There are many other countries that I've visited and would like to visit again that don't stone women for not wearing a head covering and that have laws that advocate fairness, gender equality and respect. And have better weather.

I think that is still a problem no? An even bigger problem tbh.

Sameshitdifferentdayx · 16/09/2024 20:38

People are taking opinions and experiences way too seriously 🤣😂

Bobskeleton · 16/09/2024 20:40

phillippines.

It takes soooo long to travel between the islands. I do think this is more of a me problem though, and my bad planning.

Maybe I should go back but just be more organised!

thestudio · 16/09/2024 20:48

Crikeyalmighty · 16/09/2024 19:23

@thestudio very true. I do enjoy the US but very very specific areas and places.one thing I have found in the US with service in general is that it's either in your face niceness and very full on ( think Disney) or surly and rude- can't give a shit- have found suprisingly little of the kind of pleasant but brisk competency that you get in say Sweden or Germany or even sometimes inUK . Same with meals- I've had truly fab ; (particularly but not exclusively in California, Chicago and New York ) or pretty awful cheap processed shit - far harder to get a good middle level meal in many areas

Yes agree.

And on the subject of Germany and Northern Europe more generally - I am a pure Gen X 'cool' chaser and if you'd have told me thirty years ago that those kind of national traits - rationality, reasonableness, a general expectation (usually met) that people will do the right thing for the community, because they identify as an individual within a community - I would have laughed a 90s Camden laugh and trotted off to my Jim Jarmusch screening before the Pavement afterparty.

Barbados. For all the hype, I found it quite underwhelming ☹️.

Wow I loved it 🙈

forevernumb · 16/09/2024 21:00

Would not go back to South Africa - getting metal detectors run over you before entering a restaurant 😳 , the metal doors on shops with buzzers to get in.
India - horrible. Beggars pointing to their incapacities, piles of plastic water bottles, it's horrible. It's always a scam of some kind too.
Mauritius - boring. A bit like the Caribbean scenery wise but without the fun.
Although Jamaica - can't walk about , men calling you lesbians if you are a group of women 🙄 and always drugs and guys wanting to give you babies 🙄 . Horrible.

mids2019 · 16/09/2024 21:00

@JHound .

I agree. It seems somehow giving into patriarchal authoritarianism by dressing in traditional Muslim clothing to avoid harassment.

thestudio · 16/09/2024 21:01

Also - I wonder if, as well as unpleasant experiences in individual countries, tourism as a general idea is something that we are all going off a bit?

Given everything else that's going on politically and environmentally, it's all harder to enjoy in a carefree way, like we could even 15 years ago.

It's much harder to not be aware I think.

Crikeyalmighty · 16/09/2024 21:17

@thestudio ha, ha- we work in music and yep at 62 I now find a special kind of appreciation for a beautiful smelling well laid out Scandinavian department store etc !! These days I am definitely less about cool, more about comfort and quality.

SquirrelMadness · 16/09/2024 21:23

People saying that the US is 'overhyped' are confusing me. It's an absolutely massive country with a huge amount of diversity in landscapes. From Alaska to Death Valley - how can you write off all of it? Yellowstone, Zion, Grand Canyon, Yosemite - I could spend 12 months travelling round the States and not get bored. New Orleans, Portland, New York, Washington DC are all fascinating cities with so much to see and do. Personally I wouldn't choose to go back to LA or Vegas but you can't judge an entire massive country after just experiencing a small corner of it.

The people saying Wales are also confusing. There's so much beauty in Wales - the Brecon beacons, Snowdonia, Pembrokeshire...
